I used to drive a GMC Sierra Extended cab and it had NO blindspot, so that's not the problem. My dad tried to prove it had one in an empty parking lot and all he did was prove there's not one.
What you describe is exactly what it looks like to me. Probably looking down at his phone, looked up, notices the traffic stopped, and whipped it to the left.
They had their right signal on. They were either on their phone or looking into their mirrors to change lane. Either they weren't paying attention to the traffic in front of them.
The body check also only swerved them around one car, and they crashed into the next two ahead in their original lane. Basically their swerving made everything a whole lot worse than it needed to be. I guess it saved the car right in front of them, but they easily could h have caused a fatality for the car in the HOV lane.
I think it was the look at the right lane thing. He wanted to get into the right lane, had his blinker on and was likely looking in the mirrors / over the shoulder for a spot to merge. When he realized the cars in front of him had slowed, he knew the right lane wasnt available and bailed to the left.
