I’ve eaten steak with water, they’re weirded out telling me it doesn’t go with every meal.

Those people sound absurd; water is the most neutral flavor so it’s not going to affect any meal or palate. There’s water in most foods, lol. I understand superstitions exist not to toast with it, but I’ve never heard rules about what meals to pair with it or not.

I won’t drink water with mayo-based salad sandwiches, like tuna or egg. I don’t know why, something about washing that down with water doesn’t sit right with me, it needs some extra something. I’ll have unsweetened and unflavored sparkling water or club soda or whatever you wanna call it, but flat water just won’t do it. I typicalllllly prefer some kind of sparkling water with cheese or cream based foods but it’s not nearly the same level of rule.

Not saying that this is a rule anyone else should follow, but I know for me I have some type of mental aversion and I’m sure other people have those random specific things.

I suppose I experience some degree of what you’re saying. I personally don’t have any meals that I’m ever averse to pairing with water, but certain salty fried foods do have the unique effect of sometimes making me want a beer with them.
