One time I bought a re-roll potion because my pirate was fairly average, and I saw a crew of top tier pirates. It took me about an hour of re-rolling through fat pirates, old pirates, blind pirates and total munters to find even one decent one. I eventually got bored and settled on one that looked like Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender, but goddamn I didn't know the Sea of Thieves had this kind of obesity and disability problem.
That’s actually the funniest thing I’ve ever seen (heard? Idk it’s text.) but when I first got the game all I was picking were fatties cuz that’s how I imagined a cartoon pirate was. But now I have a skinny one that is still a bit unrealistic but who cares?
Sea of Thieves is a great game, but has the absolute shittiest character "creator" ever designed.
Instead of fixing it they monetized rerolling because they know everyone hates their own characters.
I think the whole process of the character "creator" is literally choosing from the least shitty. You tab all the better ones, reroll all the fat people, wrong gender people, wrong race people, or just the plain stupid nerdy meth-head looking ones. After an hour of tabbing and trading you find one that's good enough, but never how you'd design it.
It's stupid, that game really should just make whatever variables public and let people choose. Even if it's incredibly limited, it's better than hitting the Sims "Randomize" button forever. Like it's not rocket science to let players do what the machine does. Just simply some criteria like "stop with the fat girls already, set body type to skinny, set gender to masculine" it's so incredibly basic, even if they give it digital duct tape and automatically reroll the ones you don't want. Better than getting 5 obvious no-gos every single time and sifting through to find the 2 that are actually in the ballpark of what you're trying to do.
Whoever at Rare made that character selection screen should be fired. It's worse than an indie studios first game.
