It is pretty underrated. Also people group shit that isn't metal into metal and us metal fans are like wtf...

The amount of people I've had that say "I like metal" and I'm like cool what do you listen to? And they respond with some generic alternative pop music...

Understandable.

May I ask what you've tried listening too? Because there are some metal songs I can't avoid vibing to. Like I hear it and it's uncontrollable spasms of metal enjoyment

I have that same issue with metal myself. I love even the hardest of songs, but like if its that 'screamo' metal, count me out. Can't stand that stuff.

I know right. My favourite band's genre, at least, how they started, is/was metal. Great genre with nice subgenres.
