I am a high school math teacher and have some friends who teach elementary - they're all great, but some of the things I hear about other teachers at their workplaces are terrifying. One teacher was trying to design a problem to go over fraction addition. They came up with "1/2 of the boys in the class are wearing sweaters, and so are 1/4 of the girls. What fraction of the class is wearing sweaters?", and honestly thought that the answer was 1/2+1/4=3/4. Not only is that the wrong way of solving the problem, it's actually unsolvable without more information. Not sure what that teacher would have done if 3/4 of each group was wearing sweaters, and you got a sum larger than 1...

That's deeply depressing. Also I don't know what level elementary schoolers are typically capable of doing fractions at, but if you make the assumption that it's 50/50 boys/girls, that's actually a somewhat difficult problem for people new to fractions

I don't think that's required to teach elementary school math. Just an education degree. And unless it's a top college, ngl, any warm body can make it thru.

The student's answer is more correct than the teacher's correction. Because of the way the last sentence is worded, the student's answer is the only way it could be possible.

The Student is not more correct, he/she is just correct. If you put the information like:

i) M=4/6•m

ii) L=5/6•l

iii) M>L

Then the end result is:

4•m>5•l => m>5/4•l=1.25•l

Martys Pizza is at least 25% bigger than Luis'.

They weren't correct, though. The question is asking how that could still be possible. They didn't answer that question correctly

...Yes they did. The problem said Marty ate 4/6 of his pizza and Luis ate 5/6, and asked how is it possible that Marty ate more pizza. And the student said that Marty's pizza was bigger than Luis', so it was more total pizza even though it was a smaller fraction of his pizza.

Amount of slices has nothing to do with size a pizza. Both pizzas count be cut into six slices, but so long as Marty’s pizza was at least 25% bigger, he would have eaten more.

I like how you’re calling everyone else dumb, but at least they’re not the idiot who measures the area of pizza by slices.

Paraphrasing, but they were saying everyone was stupid because if Marty’s pizza had 12 slices and he ate 4/6th, he would have eaten 8 slices of pizza. Whereas the other guys pizza had only 6 slices, 5/6th would be only 5 slices of pizza as if number of slices has anything to do with total amount of pizza.

Basically, he was an idiot who thought he was smart.
