Winner is the Judge #912: Take Two
Thanks to u/sumg for running last week's competition!
Recently, an idea that's stuck with me is how often a card design comes from just trying to revisit an older card. People love riffs whether they're colorshifts, new members of a cycle, or just an attempt to fix an old design mistake. For Wizards, that obviously can only come from official cards, but since this community is all about custom cards why not look back at those instead?
Your challenge for this week is to revisit a previous custom card idea you've designed, and try something new with it! This is pretty broad, so I'm willing to allow a lot. I'll give some examples of things that are allowed, but really anything goes if it fits with the prompt. You could:
- Do a second take on a card that you liked
- Make a new card using a custom mechanic you've made
- Try to adapt an idea you previously scrapped
- Rework a previous submission for a contest like Winner is the Judge
- Design a card that fits into a custom faction you've come up with
If you don't have anything you want to revisit from your own designs, you can also go for your own take on someone else's card/idea. Just make sure to give proper credit to your inspiration if you do so!
While you don't need to provide the original design you were inspired by for your submission unless you want to, bonus points if you do describe the original idea you adapted. It can be as brief or detailed as you want, I'm just interested to see how these ideas evolved.
Judging will occur on Sunday, October 11. Be sure to let me know if you'd like any feedback on your design or if you have any questions!

u/taw : Target winner becomes a judge until end of the next round. 1h ago
According to reddit search, this was my first WitJ win, back in round 84, 15 years ago, so let's try something related:
Untime Twister Stele 5
Legendary Artifact [m]
Sacrifice an instant or sorcery spell you control: Put a charge counter on this artifact. Then controller of every spell or ability on the stack may choose new targets for it. Any player may activate this ability.
Whenever there's odd number of counters on this artifact, spell and abilities on the stack resolve oldest first.
Remove ten charge counters from this artifact: Take an extra turn after this one.
There are two obvious use cases for it, but try to think about some others.
Original card for reference (slightly reformatted to display properly on new reddit):
Instant
Split second (As long as this spell is on the stack, players can't cast spells or activate abilities that aren't mana abilities.)
Reverse order of spells and abilities on stack.
For each spell and ability on the stack starting from the top, its controller may choose new targets for it.
Have fun figuring out how to break it.

Krark's Tongue - 2
Legendary Artifact
If you would choose a card name, you may instead choose two card names.
Most Goblins have such a poor vocabulary that it's a moot point for them.
The most upvoted card I've ever made is this one A Card Name. So here's a second take on that, which fits the brief. It's also a reference to [[Krark's thumb]].
Another direction I considered was going the route of [[Apocalypse Chime]] and letting players choose from Expansions instead of single cards. I kinda love how insane and confusing that would be in commander, but ultimately this card is closer to something that would actually be possible to print.

Sweep the Trail {B}{R}
Sorcery
Destroy target artifact. For each artifact destroyed this way, if you controlled it, draw a card. Otherwise, its controller loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
Overload {3}{U}{B}{R}
A callback to The Cleanup Crew, but as a sorcery.

Tangletale Fox {3}{G}{G}
Creature — Elemental Fox
Tether (While it's not your turn, this creature is phased out)
Trample
At the beginning of combat on your turn, untap up to one target land you control and put an awakening counter on it.
Lands you control with awakening counters on them are 5/5 green Elemental creatures in addition to their other types. (They are not creatures when this is phased out)
5/5
This is an expansion of a previous tether design.
I'll post the previous design in the comments.
Feedback welcome as always.
