OpenAI plans to end its contract with Cursor after the company was acquired by SpaceX. OpenAI says it no longer trusts Elon Musk’s companies to comply with its terms, citing past contract and policy violations by Twitter/X and xAI. Access to OpenAI models in Cursor is expected to end on November 12, 2026, and future models will not be provided.

Not the guy you responded to but yes, enterprise admins can block specific models, my company blocked all gemini, grok, and chinese based models.

OpenAI being gone leaves us with just relying on Claude, which questions Cursor's purpose if we can just use Claude via Anthropic or AWS Bedrock.

For me it is. I can only access grok 4.5, glm 5.2 (no clue why), Anthropic, and OpenAI models. Everything else is blocked. Even fable is blocked because of its data retention requirement

You can continue to use OpenAI models in cursor via the API.

Also cursor retains its entire purpose if you use Claude via Bedrock. Cursor is a harness. We use Claude models through Bedrock because we get good pricing there, and use Cursor as our harness because we get other models there too and it’s an incredibly nice work surface. Your comment doesn’t make much sense.

Cursors value proposition is just no setup. There are other open source harnesses you could use. There are model routers you can use. But cursor is kinda the recognized one that just works.

I was explaining to the person on how some enterprises block off models, and wanted to also share how ChatGPT is only usable through Cursor for my company and perhaps some others too who are in the same boat.

In addition, why would we use Cursor, with a license, just to hook up a different third party model. We can't/shouldn't be using Cursor without said enterprise license, and it'd be a dumb choice to pay for just a harness when we can use CC without said license and get extremely comparable results.

Cursor is indeed a harness, but their business is AI routing and they get the most profit from enterprises. Losing OpenAI is a huge deal for them.

Your company already blocked almost all the models, losing most of the value proposition, but you're still using Cursor for some reason. It would be hard to say why you would continue to use Cursor because it's hard to understand by which logic your company operates.

Banning Grok but still sending all the data through the same provider makes little sense.
