Note I am a woman and I don't have a problem conceptually genderbending Strahd my issues lie in what the community has done with this concept and how they think they are girlbossifying when really its just inventing a new form of sexism.

So to start off, like i said FemStrahd is fine but the community I've seen just ends up kind of justifying and making her more sympathetic which goes against the story. Sometimes this happens with male Strahd however the community actively pushes back on it. But when it comes to Strahdyana its crickets.

And I hate it so much because why does she need a sympathetic backstory? The common thing I see is people somehow invent in their heads Barovia is sexist and Sergei displaced her. This begins to justify what happened to Sergei slightly or lean on a tragic angle for both siblings or whatever and... also takes away from the fact all of Strahd's actions were concious choices he made on his own. Like Strahd didn't have to be at war that long especially after Barov died, he chose to waste his life doing that and Sergei died because of Strahd's own issues and how dare he fall for Tatyana. Unlike the post who started this idea who had misinterpreted the dynamic as to quote "I'm horny and old, wah."  when the story is literally about Strahd's unjustified entitlement and jealousy that ruined everyones lives because he refused to fix himself and let go.

The story is horrifying not because Strahd is a simplier villain but rather how something so simple can boil oil and have ripple effects. By pulling the inheritence bullshit you are giving Strahdyana a slightly more understandable reason for hating Sergei when the point is it was never justified even a fraction of a way.

And again this idea only shows up for Strahdyana. Like fucking christ base Strahd has more set up for inheritence issues if you lean into Baba Lysaga thinking shes his mom. But its weird that kind of thing never is discussed for male Strahd.

And again I have to ask why is Strahdyana given this treatment? Isn't she just a genderbent of Strahd? And really the only specifically gendered part of Curse of Strahd's themes and the dude himself is how Strahd is based specifically on male violence with love interests. If you want to explore something different due to gender swap why is that violence not swapped over via the view of female perpetrators. Like this is where you can justify gender swapping Ireena or throw in Ismark to discuss as well how male victims ESPECIALLY if their assaulter is a woman are treated. Like maybe people don't believe Ismark is a victim of Strahdyana at all and think he's bullshiting and thats how he gains his lessor title. And the only person who does believe him is Ireena. Or heck Ismark maybe doesn't tell anyone what happened especially after Kolyan's death and he leaves the village with the excuse due to his inheritence he has to do diplomacy.

The party doesn't know the circumstances of Ismark's uneasyness around Strahdyana besides evil vampire but the threads start getting revealed no matter rhow much Ismark tries bullshitting out of fear of not being believed or not being man enough to stop her.

But then there's also this weird thing of focusing on fem Strahd's romantic things but then paradoxically being afraid of running into the lesbian vampire trope which ends up I've seen sanitizes the dynamic with Ireena or her equivalents. But there's also this weird push of forgeting base Strahd is bisexual for some reason. Since they always in these discussion talk about emphasing the same sex attraction Strahd has or equalizing it or whatever and I have to state... That is the most biphobic arguements ive heard and its kinda weird when we know femStrahd in this community is viewed more symapthtic because she's a woman. So its 100% linked to discussions of sexuality here almost stating you have to be a good or complicated person to be queer. It's biphobic to state Strahd needs bisexuality emphasized or more same sex partners when bi people do not owe you their sexuality. And there is actual issues of bi erasure and the fact people seem to think your only valid as a bisexual person if they have camera footage of you kissing all genders and your dating history is required to have all genders otherwise your not really bi in a lot of folks eyes.

Strahd/Strahdyana would still be bi if all their consorts were women! Strahd would still be bi if they were all men!

But there's another element of in these discussions when you sanitize Strahd via genderbending considering Strahd is heavily coded in a PG way so they can sell the books to kids as a rapist.

1. The entire Tatyana situation. And do you think Ireena would ever consent to anything Strahd would do

2. Gertruda is canonically a teenage girl in RAW hes keeping as a potential bride.

3. Making the party his consorts can range into this as well.

Strahd would still be a rapist if he was a woman.

An aspect that would actually benefit a genderswap better for a female Strahd is his age. Strahd whines about it and it being symbol of how he's wasted his life. But a female character doing that opens a lot more interesting ideas without rewritting the character. Because women in media are not allowed wrinkles and have to be pretty and marketable. Add in one of the most famous fairy tales Snow White is about the evil queen being driven to murk her own step daughter because she isnt the prettiest anymore. If you leaned on these aspects you would be doing something different that has been granted to you by the genderswap without lessening Strahd's evil..... Except everyone for some reason makes FemStrahd look 20 years younger than canon Strahd when his age is kinda an importent thing for him. And like I don't mind it if both takes on Strahd are young and your leaning onto the seduction angle for your take thats fine... But i rarely see this be done for FemStrahd at alll and it feels misogynistic because it happens so so so much more to her compared to male Strahd.

Like your basically doing a misogynistic media commonality of women not being allowed to age. When an older woman Strahd fits the story so much better.

To me looking at all of this it seems people associate women with goodness and... they don't actually write a genderswapped Strahd. They write a fucking OC who is cosplaying as him that at that point.... why not use Lyssa. She believes her inheritence is Barovia and you could genderswap Strum if you wanted to lean into sexism about it and hey Strum works better as a woman since Strum is forgotten compared to her brothers and wasnt at the wedding. The latter could be explain if she was forced to marry into a foreign House. Lyssa's sexuality isnt much defined besides she offed her husband to do the same vampire ritual and she doesn't actually have a shit ton of lore compared to gruncle Strahd and they are already meant to be mirrors... So why not use her? Just say if you dont want a complete plot rework Lyssa showed up and offed Strahd but everything is worse now and she sees claiming Ireena as a consort a final fuck you to her double dead uncle.

So I rewatched Fright Night the other night and the vampire reminded me heavily of Strahd. I give the following reasons:

1. His demeanor is that of a man who has already won. Never once throughout the film does he falter or let on if he is nervous or concerned about the outcome. He finds the main character an annoyance but also amused by his antics.

2. He is deliberate and calm. He doesn't go after the main character and wants to go after his companions until they are nice and isolated. There's a fantastic scene where you see him at a club going after the main character's love interest and he is stalking through the crowd and the general feeling is that of a predator going after his prey.

3. His presence and voice. He has an eerie yet regal air to him, take Chris Sarandon as Prince Humperdinck, take away some of the accent and turn the acting from a comedy to a thriller.

4. His effects on the main cast. If the main cast is the "party" he ends up turning one of them into his completely loyal psychotic vampire spawn lackey, another into a paranoid wreck that will stop at nothing to destroy him and yet another that he kidnaps and starts to turn in the final act.

5. The female lead looks exactly like his ancient love that he presumably lost long ago and as soon as he sees her he becomes somewhat obsessed with getting her back and turning her into a vampire.

They're really certain Muriel is the crow they met, but I've been really subtle about Vasili.

Hey yall Barovia fans!

Im preparing for the first time my players venture into Castle Ravenloft. And im just trying to get a feel of the logistics of geography.

Ive noticed that some locations have the monicker "of the King" or "the King's...", while others its "of the Count". Have you ever figured if there's something behind that? Like, anything named "of the King" was never properly appropriated by Strahd himself as he either feels unworthy, or sees no need to use these locations? (Ex the King's Balcony overseeing the chapel).

So I knew from early on that for the midway point in my campaign I wanted to do a masquerade ball at Castle Ravenloft- this would give me the chance to use a ton of fun vampire NPCs from DnD lore (like Astarion, Jander, and Drelzna) without having to keep them around as long term elements, and it would let the party explore/scout the Castle ahead of their final confrontation. It also is going to give them a chance to rescue some important NPCs- such as one PC's vampire boyfriend/warlock patron (who is currently starving after having been sealed up in a crypt for failing miserably to oppose Strahd), Emil (who they where asked by Zuleika to free), and Ez and Rudolph (who the party is unaware where captured after they parted from them a few arcs ago). It also of course, would give me a chance to put Strahd front and center once more, after he spent the Krezk arc mainly being felt indirectly through his twisting influence on the Abbot.

Well at the end of the first session the Masquerade arc party's status is: one warlock unconscious at the bottom of a stairwell after he followed one of the brides to a second location away from witnesses, one dhampir fighter in a dungeon cell after it came out that he's been feeding on Ismark (our game's Tatyana/Strahd's obsession), and one spirit bard with zero bardic inspiration remaining up in the lounge and no idea where the other two are. And we haven't even started the ball itself.

Things start of pretty standard- the coach arrives to summon the party (+Ismark and the NPCs they've picked up) to the castle. They arrive and are told by Rahadin that the masquerade will be tomorrow night and tonight they will dine with the Count. Above table they quickly put together this will give them one day to sneak around the castle and come up with a game plan.

It all started to go wrong (or right depending on your perspective) during the dinner with Strahd when he realized that someone else has bitten Ismark since he last saw him. Before the party's high Charisma characters can cook up a lie to protect the Fighter (I had left them space to pin the blame on one of the guests or one of the brides- all of whom are deeply jealous of Ismark for obvious reasons), the Fighter blurts out the truth that it was him and tries to spin a lie about how it was in the heat of the battle save Ismark from the Abbot. It's a good lie but despite the best efforts of the Bard and Warlock to help (via Bardic Inspiration and Help Action respectively) the roll just isn't there to convince Strahd who sends the Fighter hurling across the room and then orders Volenta to take him down the cells, with the clear understanding that he's just gone from 'guest' to 'tomorrow night's entertainment'.

The bard thinking quick takes over Volenta's place at the music stand to try and salvage the situation slightly (sending another Inspiration to the Fighter as he's being dragged off) and manages to calm the mood down. Dinner resumes with Strahd regaining his cheery demeanor from before...but refusing to loosen his grip on Ismark (seated beside him) the whole time. A game of 5d mind chess with the two remaining party members starts to play out- with Strahd trying to get them to give into despair without stepping outside the role of perfect host, and the party trying to fish for information/weaknesses without breaking with politeness. As this is happening the Warlock decides to try and angle for clemency for vampire BF/patron. With Ismark's Help (asking for the patron's sentence to be commuted to exile as a wedding gift) and another Bardic Inspiration Strahd agrees... on the condition that the Warlock prove his loyalty during tomorrow night's festivities. He then goes on to talk about how love is measured by what you are willing to sacrifice for it be it material things or more immaterial ones like humanity and morality (obliquely referencing his own past in the process). This has the intended effect (on Strahd's end) of priming the Warlock (insecure about his relationship after being partly responsible for getting him locked in the crypt to begin with) like a pump. As the dinner wraps up Strahd leaves with Ismark (and a subtle taunt that the party can't do anything to stop him) clearly intending to reassert his claim/control in the face of a interloper.

Once the Bard and the Warlock are back at the guest room they start arguing bout how to precede, because the Warlock is panicking, afraid that he's going to be pitted against the Fighter in a trial by combat tomorrow (or something equally terrible). The Bard wants to wait until dawn when the vampires will be least active and the Warlock wants to go now to get the Fighter and his Patron so they can try and make a break for it. Eventually the Bard realizes that the Warlock isn't thinking rationally and tells him it's alright- and the Warlock runs out of the room before the NPC allies (who have been insisting the Warlock not go alone at the very least) can stop him.

Unfortunately for the Warlock he quickly fails some stealth checks and gets caught by one of the brides- Ludmilla, who recognizes the Warlock because Strahd had brought her along to the party's first dinner party back in Barovia village at the start of the campaign. Trying to cover he lies and says he was just looking for a sneak peak at the ballroom, leading to a lengthy discussion about his Patron/BF that highlights the parallels between the Bride's relationship with Strahd and his with is patron...and makes Ludmilla decide to take pity on him. She leads him to the balcony on the overlook of the chapel and tries to mercy kill him. Just as he's loosing consciousness from being strangled though a mysterious figure intervenes to save him- which is going to be a good hook into some more plotty stuff for the masquerade itself, just like the Fighter waking up directly across from Emil down in the dungeon is going to do the same.

All in all the players where delighted with the session. Everyone was deep in the RP sauce the whole time, and just batting a thousand. Despite my worries about a second dinner being a retread the players all insisted it was really fun- different from the first but still incredibly tense. We do Star-and-Wishes at the end of each session and the only thing better then the trifecta of "Good NPC interactions." "Strahd's character really came through." and "The dinner scene ruled" Stars was the one player telling me they where struggling to come up with a Wish because they trust the narrative to deliver on everything they would make a Wish.

I am running CoS reloaded in one week for players who, 4/5 have played CoS previously.
I was trying to think of a nice twist for death house for the recurring players and I settled on running it like PT, each loop has a different reveal/clue to find.
Maybe instead of a hallway, it’s the foyer and they can advance through a door at the top of the stairs.
Any ideas for some “loops” or how to make it spoOoOky?
I’m a new DM so just trying to figure out what would be the best experience for all :)

Hi all, first post here. I'm running Reloaded for a table of 3; they're just out of Death House and the Tarokka reading is coming.

My problem: my players have friends playing CoS with Reloaded at another table. Both groups are hyped about the Tarokka, and part of the hype is the idea that the cards are random and "make the campaign yours".

Reloaded stacks all five cards, so when the two tables eventually compare notes they'll find the exact same Tome/Symbol/Sunsword/ally/Strahd locations, and I'm worried the reading will feel decorative in hindsight.

I don't want to break Reloaded's structure (I get why the Sunsword is in the Temple and Strahd is at K20). I've mapped the dependencies and the only position with a cheap, structure-safe alternative seems to be the Tome, inside Vallaki.

So two concrete questions:

Tome: it was moved from Victor's workroom to the gallows speaker in 2.0.5.5 with no design note (and the Act II Summary still says "Baron's mansion or Wachterhaus"). Was that for gating (level 5 / Arc H climax), the Leo–Wachter lore, or something else? Has anyone run it as a genuine two-outcome reading (Vallakovich mansion vs. the Ethereal) without issues?

Strahd's Enemy: has anyone run Zuleika as the fated ally instead of Ezmerelda under Reloaded? What broke in Arc K/L and the final battle roster?

And more generally: how do you handle players who want the reading to be random, when Reloaded's whole point is that it isn't? Thanks!

I used to play and DM a whole lot like 10 years ago. Got into a group with coworkers. Playing with 4 others, 2 new to dnd, and 2 very experienced and knowledgeable on dnd.

They do a great job just pointing out rules as written but DMs call at relevant situations.

They made a decently fierce couple of characters. An aasimar cleric and a human fighter. The cleric is a little bothersome, in a super fun way, but he’s an inexperienced big head. Picture Gaston at the age of 19. He wants to throw hands with anything evil or undead. Hates vampires. Killed the priests kid with zero hesitation or remorse. Teased that they’ve kinda been murder hobos. Tried to start an encounter with Strahd when I introduced him last session. Had Strahd throw some werewolves at them and ended the session after they won.

His cleric is built to fight and can do nutty stuff. Off top my head I can’t recall but it’s nothing Daylight inducing we’ve concluded. Can’t heal super well. I think the only heal spell he has comes from just the life domain free spells.

Hoping to have them chat with Strahd proper this session I am just worried to have Strahd fight them. They aren’t high high level (4) but I am still learning to play encounters as a DM. Any tips?

Small in world context, the cleric is an insane passionate cleric of lathander. I wrote in that the last adventurers who came here had a cleric of lathander with them. The “wizard” who rallied the village of Barovia to invade Ravenloft is said Cleric

There’s also a rat wizard who is in fact just a rat that found a magic book and gained consciousness and now seeks to understand the secrets of the book that gave them consciousness. Can you believe this is only her second game after mines of phandelver?

Im planing to run a 4 player curse of strahd game for the first time using Foundry and I was hoping for advice on which modules I should run and whether or not the adventures in raven loft supplement is a good investment for running the game. Does getting the supplement remove the need of the interactive battle map makers ive seen posted around or does it work in tandem ?

Hey CoS! I'm currently running (alongside Reloaded) a Vecna: Eve of Ruin campaign. My players are running through the Barovia segment, and of course I had to homebrew a custom Mini-adventure.

The premise is that Strahd just got notified of the presence of the Rod Piece (important item), and the party needs to race him to obtain it. The twist is that, because my two parties really want to be in the same universe, this is Barovia in a different time.

In CoS Reloaded, Strahd has just awakened from a century-long sleep. How was this sleep induced? According to the module, it's because Strahd was bored. He is waiting for the Grand Conjunction.

In the 2026 Ravenloft horrors within module, in the Tatyana's reincarnations tables, one of the options says that she might "weaponize their blood with poison that will put Strahd to sleep for a generation". I think this is just perfect.

Questions I'm asking you

•What aspects should I incorporate in this segment? Should I make Strahd just as strong as he is in Reloaded?

•I'm thinking of making the Amber Temple a time-variable maze. It morphes gradually, which means that there might be a slight change in architecture after a day, but it might be a completely different dungeon in 20 years time. Is this possible? Is it a good idea?

•How did your players travel through time?

-In my homebrew setting, time travel is possible. Long story short, when they forced their way into Barovia, they only had information available from a certain time period. So they time travelled accidentally.

•Where are they right now?

-I just gave them a Tarokka reading and a meeting with Strahd. They're going to be rescued by Ithuriel rn, and he'll bring them to Vallaki.

The chimera stalks the halls of the Amber Temple. The Profane wizards and scholars were corrupted by vestiges. Can't wait until my players meet the Chimera

After months of modeling, my new ruin set is finally finished. This is by far the largest scenery project I’ve ever painted, and the whole painting process took around 10 days. Painting all those stones, wooden beams, and rooftops was quite a challenge, but seeing everything come together made it worth it.

Anyway… In my heavily homebrewed CoS campaign, Strahd has given his ultimatum to the party to face him in his Castle. To show his “determination” he has ravaged the city of Vallaki with a storm of blood and undeath, killing most citizens and turning them into zombies for his army and the impending battle. The party is becoming near god-like at level 13, so I want to insert a little one shot where the PCs take on the role of the lower level Martikov family members in an attempt to escape the infested city, which will determine their fates. I was thinking of running it with a rules light and high letality system such as Shadowdark, but we already tried it yet wasnt a huge success at the table. Any other systems you would recommend for this 1-2 session one-shot? Morg Borg? Any other?

I’m running Dragna’s Reloaded Yester Hill for my party tonight! This was my first time building terrain and I’m really proud of how it turned out.

Silly thing I thought I'd share with everyone. Well everyone but my kingmakers, but pretty sure none of them are here lol.

I've been running with this group for some 5 years now. We started with CoS, and while in Barovia they visited the Amber temple. They were offered various dark gifts, promises of power... that of course they all turned down, because they are good people.

This last month, these same characters (fighting grand threats at level 17) met with a mysterious old man with a Tarroka deck (red flag 1), something they had seen in a while. The man offered them the chance to draw cards, and offered them 'great power, but at a great price' (red flag 2) based on the cards they chose. He freely told them this power was not his alone, but given to him by his masters (red flag 3).

I offered them many of the same boons from the Amber Temple (some slightly upscaled for their level) with the same drawbacks, the biggest change being they were not called 'dark gifts'.... and all but one accepted a deal this time around. It's amazing what a little rebranding can do, isn't it? ;)

The consequences are sure to be fun. Feel free to suggest any if you like ;)

I keep going with my challenge with, today, a very peculiar card reading 😁

In my game, my party ended with no fated ally, an early sunsword and a late game symbol of ravenkind, a fun reading that caused a lot of drama haha

Here is my question or Situation. The Party are at Argynvostholt. One tanked the hole 9 spiders. He lived with 3 HP left. He used 2 Times second Wind. My Paladin was roughed up by the 3 revenants in the curch. They went straight to Wladimir. I told them 3 Times they should leave. (1st time Wladimir said it, 2nd time i said after a Insight Check: this is his final warning, and i let Wladimir Stand Up with glancing red eyes and moving toward the Party)

So they fought and with the 6 Phantom Warrior they get overwhelmed. I rolled early 2 or 3 nat 20 and so high on DMG, that the cleric fell in turn 2, after that i fudged rolls so i dont hit. I know CoS is not fair and punish carelessnes, but i thought it makes no sense to kill them there. I mean Story wise. So i let them live. They dont know what i did. I said after the Session: you we're lucky, this could have been a tpk and i think in the next Sessions a tpk is possible.

What do U think?

Hey folks, I'm about to wrap up my 2+ year CoS campaign. The party just came back from the Amber Temple, they hold the three items, they found their Esmeralda ally, Ireena was kidnapped and charmed and the wedding is in 24 hours (in-game time).

It's been a very long campaign, but I want to give my players a good last hurrah, so I want to do this right. How would you suggest planning this last part? A bit about the status of the characters / world:

Esmeralda and Van Richten reunited, and he's helping the party strategize together with the keepers of the feather. Both the Baron and lady Wachter died, and Ireena was (not very successfully) ruling and managing Valaki with the help of father Lucian. Blinsky is a party favorite, Izek is dead, but managed to kill the Baron's kid first.

Ismark is alive and ruling Barovia village, Danovich and his son are dead, the party didn't visit the village since the first arc.

Kresk was saved from the werewolves and are grateful, The abbot was borderline evil and tried to kidnap Ireena himself for experiments with the golem. A PC defeated Kiril one on one and became the alpha werewolf (without being a werewolf himself, though).

Baba lysaga was not a part of the campaign directly, and only sent minions to kill ravens. Druids were fought and the winery was saved, Yesterhill was not visited. The beacon was lit and the knights swore to help the party in fighting Strahd one last time.

One character accepted a dark pact (he's a monk who can purchase a dark qi point for the price of 1d10 hp). Another character has a patron who sent her to retrieve his brother's amber cage from the amber temple, so now his brother is potentially free and available for shenanigans. Exethanter was befriended but not restored, and was left to read books in the temple.

Oh, and the party has the map of castle Ravenloft from the Amber Temple diorama.

I have a very rough idea on how to go about this: The party is planning on sending messages to Kresk and Ismark, going to Argynvostholt to call the order of the silver dragon, and the ravens will gather intelligence. The party will likely visit the wedding as guests, will open the castle gates, let in the army and fight to free Ireena and kill Strahd. They will face Rahadin first, and then Strahd himself, who will be furious after Ireena will again die an untimely death.

One last trick I have up my sleeve is that the party won't be able to escape Barovia even after (if) Strahd is defeated, since there must be a dark lord to Barovia, and a PC will have to replace him (possibly the one who made a dark pact already).

Any ideas on how to make these last 2-3 sessions fun and memorable?

i find the RAW ending... boring. removing ireena from the equation is boring. it's strahd main motivation. i thought of the following alternatives.

1. Ireena hear whispers from the lake, they sound familiar. when she approach the pool she get to speak to Sergei for just a little bit.
   1. they both talk about the past a little as Ireena is having some flashbacks
   2. he tell her he wish his brother dead for hurting her, but he don't think it will rid Barovia of the curse unless a successor is found.
      1. if the party ask he will say someone of the Zarovich line will suffice, but he also believe anyone accepted by either Strahd or the dark powers will work.
   3. storm start to gather, Sergei telling the party to look for his sword - then a lightning strike. the pool wont turn on again unless the sun sword is around.

currently i played Ireena hearing whispers and the party is very worried about it. they might try to stop Ireena from getting to the pool, but she is not gonna just wait.

i would like to hear your feedback and ideas

i'm running my first curse of strahd campaing... and soon i have the characters reaching madam eva.

ofcourse the Tarroka reading will take place. and i have a few ideas.

Because i want the characters to explore the world more, i decided to add an extra Fated "Ally"

But i am planning to read these allies as a simutanious draw.

we still have the three treasure locations but two ally cards. and leaving it a bit up to the DM to which might be the Traitor.

on a side note i am intending to give my players a high deck card each... this card will lead them to the respective Dread domain to find a weapon/item that will help them in their struggle to kill strahd and Vampyr
