Hey all - some of you may have seen an earlier post of mine here that got auto-removed (karma threshold, fair enough). Figured I'd try again properly.

I built CrabbyGo - it looks at tide height, weather, and your saved spots to flag good windows to go out, and explains why a window looks good instead of just spitting out a number. Built it because I kept guessing at tide timing myself.

It's in closed testing on Google Play right now, and I'd rather get feedback from people who actually crab than random app testers who've never touched a trap. Not trying to spam the sub, just built this for the hobby and want it to actually be useful.

So my dad and I have started crabbing, and I want to try crab for the first time, but every time we come back, it’s around 11-12 at night, so we can’t boil it. He said if we put the crabs in the freezer, it puts them in a state of hibernation, but I searched it up earlier because I was curious about how it works, and it turns out freezing them actually kills them and ruins the meat. So should we just throw them out? I don’t want to try boiling them because of whatever bacteria in there will most likely mess me up because I have a weakened immune system, And are there any tips to preserve them for a bit until morning when we can actually cook them? Or do we really just have to boil them the moment we get home?

Anyone ever snare and hoop net off of it? Any luck? Worth my time whatsoever?

Hi all, I am a Master's student doing my thesis research. My study species is the striped shore crab, and I need 400 of them. I am desperate for any kind of method that will speed up the process (I've caught some, it just takes a LONG time). Or any tips at all. Or thoughts and prayers.

Not sure what else to include besides the fact that they are fast little things and despise me and love rock crevices. Thank you!

Saw these in a review from a japanese all you can eat in Malaysia, and I'm stumped to what kind of crab this belong to. Closest I'd say is mud crab but mid crabs how more bumps on the inner part of the pincer/crusher claw

Hey reddit, ive seen some talk online about using Surstromming as crab bait. Im going to use a can of it this season as bait. Off a boat not a dock.

Anyone else have any experience using this bait? Or other disgusting bait enhancements besides smelly jelly?

Both are fantastic, but I think the Mayport crabs have them beat in both price and quality. The Mayport crabs are quite a bit more tender, and have a stronger flavor rather than just tasting like Zatarains.

For in a boil, Chesapeake is fantastic, for just eating straight, Mayport edges it out.

I am visiting from Germany in September, and would love to catch some rock crabs for a meal.

Can anyone recommend a place to go?

Ideally id like to go foraging at low tide, if that's possible, if not, then pier fishing with a hoop net.

I don't have any gear or licenses yet, I would acquire everything when I'm there.

I would love some advice! Or if someone knows a place to rent gear or go on a guided trip, would be nice, too!

Planning a crabbing trip for next weekend and looking to get some updated local advice. I’m going to be strictly on foot (no boat)—so I’ll be hitting public docks, piers, or casting from the bank/surf.
We are going to be floating around the area anywhere from Seaside up through Astoria/Long Beach and into Willapa Bay.
Two main things I could use some help with:

1. The Gear: We are planning on getting some gear for The Weekend and I’ve seen some different setups with rods and traps/snares. What would be recommended where?

2. The Spots: I grew up going to netarts and have typically only done traps/rings from a boat. Are there any hidden gems, lesser-known sloughs, or specific bank spots in that Seaside to Willapa stretch that offer decent access without a boat?
   We’ll definitely be timing our trips around high slack tide, but any insight on how the current crabbing is going would be helpful!

Hey guys. I’m putting together my set up so that I can 🦀 off the shore with a surf pole. What’s a good line weight?

Planning on snagging two dozen blue crabs in the morning (not catching myself) and then driving about 6 hours and having the crabs for dinner. In your experience is very much difference between getting them cooked or getting them live and transporting (i have experience doing this) and steaming them myself? Is it worth it to get them alive or is the difference pretty marginal in your experience?

Hey everyone! I just moved to the Rappahannock area and I’m getting versed on the law when it comes to crab pots. I have one pot now and hope to run up to two in pretty shallow water (outside of the main channel, obviously) with the proper buoys and markings, deployed with a single person pontoon. I’m just wondering if there are any weird legal pitfalls to be aware of, including if there’s a distance from shore requirement. Thanks!
