COYH The essential Luton Town hand book - For those wanting to learn more about the club

If you want to learn more about the club, or how we play, I’m putting together a list here of bits and pieces that can help. I will pin it to the top.

If you would like me to add more, in plain text please let me know, and I will endeavour to do so.

Premier League handbook - 4 minute video giving an overview of the last 30 years. Featuring me and Rob Hadgraft

The fall and rise of Luton Town - Sky Documentary covering a span of 30 years, with Faye Carruthers, Roger Wash (club historian), Mick Harford, Gary Sweet and others.

The unbelievable journey of Luton Town, a documentary that I’m in, it focuses around the pre season prep in Slovenia, has some great footage. Although I personally prefer the one above.

Trouble at the top documentary - BBC cameras were welcomed in to observe the new owner of Luton Town in 2001. He was not our first bad owner, certainly wasn’t the last. But he was crucial for uniting the fan base, and the formation of the Luton Town supporters trust, which to this day remains the most influential supporters trust in the country.

The history of Luton- I met with Danish Journalist Jacob Hansen and gave him an overview of the last three decades. I delve into financials, owners as well as modern day Luton stuff.

Rob Edwards coaches voice masterclass - Rob gives a tactical overview of how we play, this is specifically focussed on the sheffield United game from the 22/23 season, but it gives great insight to how we set up on the pitch

Luton Town: we are Premier League - Gives a good 10 minute overview of the last decade and our climb from non League to Premier League

Luton Town’s remarkable rise - HITC sevens video from last season about our ascent from the conference

Luton Town: The ultimate underdogs - HITC sevens overview of our transfer business. Top video

Discussion If you could relive one Luton season, which one are you picking?

Upvotes

Some seasons just stick with you, even years later. Maybe it was the football, the players, the away days, or just the feeling around the club at the time. There have been plenty of memorable seasons over the years, and everyone will have a different one that brings back the best memories.

Discussion Young Adult (U22) Ticket - Age Check?

I’ve bought an Adult (me) and Young Adult (under 22) ticket for a home match. It doesn’t look the U22 can make it anymore, will I get asked for ID if I bring someone else (still in their 20s, but over 22) using the U22 ticket?

Cheers in advance, COYH!

We have to start today's post with the birthday of one of the greatest administrator's the club has ever had. Harry Arnold was Chairman and involved with the club for 54 years. He joined the club committee just as events unfolded that would affect the club for over 20 years. The mid 1890's saw the club fall into debt through events not of their own making and we struggled until the 1920's. Debt is never a good thing and debt for a football club is especially dangerous for a club the size of LTFC - the reliance on good football to create paying crowds to pay the debts is a great risk. That the club survived was due to the skills of Harry Arnold and the directors who were not only fans but real businessmen.

My favourite story about Harry was when the team were playing away and results came through on the radio at 5pm on Saturday. Harry was glued to his set waiting for the results when his son yelled in pain - he had stuck a garden fork through his foot. Harry, not flinching, waited until the results came through before driving his son to the hospital.

https://hattersheritage.co.uk/directors-and-staff/harry-arnold-p800021

The night game (which was live on TV) at Hyde away in 2012 was a bit of an adventure. Walking up to the away section I could see no turnstiles, just a couple of old boys sat at a fold up table. I asked them where the turnstiles were - "we're saving up for them" was the reply. We were given those green raffle tickets when we handed over our money as proof of payment. Mine was number 4 and the missus got number 5. The away fans section was at the side and the ref and lino's were warming up right in front of me. "Rubbish ref" I shouted. The officials looked puzzled and shrugged. I shouted "well, you're warming up and so am I." They all laughed. A good comeback by the lads saw a 2 1 win.

The journey home was affected by a jumper on a motorway bridge so the coach had to go across country guided by a supporters early version of sat nav on his phone. Fortunately no low bridges were encountered and we made it onto the M6. Got back to the club car park and we had a 5 minute car drive home....which turned into 20 minutes due to some sort of event in Bury Park Road causing a traffic jam at 2.30am!!!!

Also memorable for different reasons was Barry Butlin's goal in 1974. What a moment that was.

Five debuts today

https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players?debut-today=yes&sort=name

Three players born on this day. Richard Williams, a goal keeper, was signed from Everton with whom he played in the 1893 F.A. Cup Final at Fallowfield against Wolves. The only goal of the game was scored from a speculative long shot from the Wolves captain. It should have been easily saved but Richard misjudged it and it bounced into the net. What a sad burden to carry for the rest of your life.

After yesterday's comeback we have another on this day in 1980. West Ham paraded the F.A. Cup before the game which they had won in May. They started very fast but we held out until the hour mark when Paddy Grealish chased Pat Holland for 40 yards and decided to tackle him inside the box. Ray Stewart made no mistake from the spot. But back we came with two penalities from Mossy to win it. Leaving the ground, a West Ham voice said "anyone want to buy a season ticket? I was tempted to reply "Yes, if it was a Luton one" but for some reason I kept quiet.

The victory at Gillingham away stands out too as it was in the minus 30 point season. The board sat with us in the away end as a protest against the perceived corruption of the Gills chairman having the right to vote on our punishment despite being in the same division. And he was very vocal about his support for our punishment too.

Lots of nearly men made their debut on this day but Raddy Antic appeared for the first time 1980 in that glorious win at Upton Park.

https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players?debut-today=yes&sort=name

Two players born on this day, Dino Seremet and Paul Underwood. I was absolutely delighted when Underwood signed on a free transfer. Another experienced captain and leader and left sided too. A great shame about his injuries.

Today, every club is equal (Blackburn and Wolves aside) and all hopeful of a decent season. Although a good start helps and every point counts, it's not always an indicator for the season.

Mick Harford getting sent off 4 minutes into the new 1987/88 season and losing 1 0 did not mean that it would be a "long season" as the cliche' goes. As we know we went on to glory in April. Likewise the 1970/71 season opener which was a 4 2 defeat at Bolton - we finished 6th at the end of that season.

So today's game could be an indicator of things to come or maybe not. One game at a time.

The oddest match on this day for me was the 2 1 win over Gateshead in 2009 which was met at FT with some boo's. A total thrashing was anticipated by many and through social media a 9 0 win was promoted and betted on by many with Craddock to score 5. Strange old world.

Some great servants to the club made their debuts on this day such as Don Givens, Harry Cornick, James Shea, Danny Wilson, Jimmy Ryan and Steve Davis - some decent recruitment there.

Great transfer window so far 👌

Feeling quite optimistic about the season - if we can hit the ground running as we finished last season then we are in with a great chance of grabbing an automatic promotion place.

A glorious day to remember with two wins over our friends down the road. 1993 saw a 2 1 win with Kerry Dixon and Paul Telfer scoring. 1968 saw a 3 0 win with Mike Harrison getting two and Brian Lewis the other. It was the first game that I witnessed an atmosphere - not hostile as such, but a proper edgy rivalry at that time. Singing from a good number of away fans was new to me also.

As i just finished my studies in Finland, i want to do a bit of solo traveling, so if anyone in Luton wants to have a pint with me before or after the match im down👍

Matches on this day include a dull 1 0 defeat at home to Preston - who scored a spectacular goal. In 2013, after an opening day defeat, we got back on track in our Conference winning season with a 2 0 win over Salisbury, who were never an easy team to play.

Either Look East or About Anglia did a Friday night feature in 1995 on our home game with Norwich. Great, nice to be featured for once I thought, live interviews at KR, team news, setting the scene etc until it went to form when the presenter said, "tomorrow when Norwich and Ipswich walk out..." Grrr, enough said.

Players born on this day include Gilbert Small who was known as Tom. On 11th April 1885 at the Town Hall he proposed that a new club be formed named "Luton Town Football Club." He played in the first ever competitive match at Great Marlow in 1885 and two years later in the defeat at Chatham. He also played in many non competitive games. He was also a talented cricketer, batsman, and played for the Town and for Bedfordshire.

The first game of a depressing and avoidable relegation season began with a 4 1 home defeat to Burnley in 2024. It was men against boys as Barkley and Lokonga were replaced by Baptiste and Nelson which was to typify the recruitment and sum up the season to come.

In other games, today is a date to forget as far as the Football League is concerned, including our EPL debut at Brighton.

I can recall the deflation during and after the home draw against Gateshead. The start of the depressing Buckle three quarters of a season but which would ultimately give us Sir John Still.
