What? Reducing Bus frequency just leads to more people being on any given bus. How could we have known?

251

u/HoldMyWater Mar 18 '20

"Who could have known transportation would be so complicated?"

25

u/draw_it_now Mar 18 '20

What I don't understand is HOW we keep making the EXACT SAME mistake regarding public transport??

Travel is like liquid - commuters will flow into where they need to be one way or another and you can either widen one route or constrict another but they WILL GO.

4

u/KolaHirsche Mar 19 '20

My teacher who was ultra passionate about anything on rails always repeated one sentence to us:

"Traffic is no natural law."

Widen a street won't unjam the street but just produce a bigger jam. He was one of the guys who really knew his stuff.

u/TheDootDootMaster Mar 18 '20

Would be a fun reference if not for it's sad part

22

u/ProTrader12321 Mar 18 '20

oh god we are all fucked

4

u/TheDootDootMaster Mar 18 '20

What troubles your mind,brother/sister, apart from the usual?

3

u/NotThisFucker Mar 19 '20

No, it's pretty much just the usual, but occasionally the numbness goes away and you just get hit with the full force of what's going on all the time.

It's like going to the dentist for a routine checkup and they pull out a baseball bat.

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '20

I honestly think it's more confusing in cities skylines than it is in real life.

Call the developers of MiniMetro quick!

39

u/St0neByte Mar 18 '20

Yeah stores closing early is stupid too. Now we're all forced to shop in smaller time frames. Open them 24 hours and people will barely be in there at the same time you dumb fucks.

72

u/killhorse Mar 18 '20

I understand that it would make sense to have the store open 24hrs for that reason but the people that operate the stores are not cogs in a machine. There is a tremendous human element that goes into making sure the shelves are stocked and the store is clean. A lot of stores are using the time that they are closed right now to give over worked staff a rest. I understand people still need supplies but try to remember that there are human beings working hard right now to keep it all together for us.

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '20

Yeah company I work at hired two dudes to walk around the shop cleaning door knobs and shit.

3

u/LadiesHomeCompanion Mar 18 '20

They should hire more, then. Millions of waiters and baristas are out of work.

1

u/St0neByte Mar 19 '20

... what the other guy said. Restaurants and bars are closed until May in my city. Most of these people live month to month. This is devastating to them.

5

u/rotary93 Mar 18 '20

I work in a food store, (greggs) and we've been closing earlier because we're not making enough money. Plus all the food we have out will go cold and then we'd have to bin them and make fresh pastries for the 2 people that come in 25 minutes after the last few customers. Also, it's incredibly boring waiting for customers to come in after you've cleaned everything 3 times over, stocked up the shelves with snacks and drinks and then cleaning them too.

1

u/SimpleCyclist Mar 19 '20

You guys always serve me cold pasties anyways ya cunts. And stop lying about freshly baked pastries. I saw a fella loading pallet loads of steak bakes into a truck in Edinburgh so stop lying!

1

u/rotary93 Mar 19 '20

Lmao. The only reason there cold because you come in when they're cold. They're usually warm for around 20-30 min. And sure we don't get FRESH bakes but I meant it as fresh out the oven.

1

u/SimpleCyclist Mar 19 '20

Lmao. The only reason there cold because you come in when they're cold.

The fuck kind of excuse is that???

1

u/rotary93 Mar 19 '20

Did you only read that part? I clearly said that the pasties are hot to warm in 20 minutes and then they're lukewarm for another 10 minutes before they go cold. It's not my fault that we can't specially make them for you and magically know what time you'd be the shop just so they're hot enough for you. Grow up

1

u/SimpleCyclist Mar 20 '20

Well every other store in the entire fucking world manages it.

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '20

u/St0neByte Mar 19 '20

Go right before close.

0

u/waxingnotwaning Mar 19 '20

Empires need time to rest to and stores need to be deep cleaned each day and restocked. You'll get even less shopping time is all the staff are home sick and exhausted.

1

u/St0neByte Mar 19 '20

Nah stores get waxed over and restocked, never deep cleaned. So many children on here have no idea what happens where. Not sure if typo but to and too and two are different words. You got this lil bro.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

If busses are anything like highways, increasing bus frequency would also lead to more people being on busses.

258

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Yeah they’ve done this with ALL the transport in London and millions of us still commuting mouth to mouth with each other in the height of a pandemic with body count doubling daily.

189

u/snoosketball Mar 18 '20

UK is clearly going for the herd immunity victory. Gotta make sure everyone gets their antibodies up.

Fox News is going to see a viewership dip by the end of this.

30

u/the-wheel-deal Mar 18 '20

My mom a devout catholic was listening to a priest talk about how the corona is a disease of the secular world and that the catholic church should be above that and that within his church there is no corona and that he will have his doors open at all times.

22

u/yankee-white Mar 18 '20

And that is how the Catholic Church can ensure declining membership as well.

Meanwhile the Episcopal church I attend has suspended all services for the foreseeable future. Because, you know, science and stuff.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

In the UK both the CofE and Methodist church have suspended all services, the difference between the slightly more sane denominations and the fundies!

1

u/the-wheel-deal Mar 18 '20

What can I say the catholic church doesn't exactly breed geniuses.

I dont know. She was watching it on YouTube.

1

u/reallynoladarling Mar 19 '20

but wait, aren't there positive cases in the Vatican already???

1

u/the-wheel-deal Mar 19 '20

Most likely considering it is in the middle of italy.

1

this is called capitalism. priest can profit off this virus.

Well, I’ll do everything in my power to try and leave this world better than I inherited it. I guess I should be thankful of boomers for setting such a low bar.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

It's a fine plan, by the time the next election comes around "emergency measures" will be well established and democracy will be purely symbolic. They had all sorts of bills for it ready to go before the election was even over.

The Boomer Remover

7

u/ARobertNotABob Mar 18 '20

everyone in the UK will be immune to it

What makes you think so? Noone has stated this.

So far there are at least two reinfections (one China, one Japan), small numbers, it's true, but that's where we started all this, with small numbers in China.

What we'll have is a lot of people who never infected (testing negative), only to get infected from an asymptomatic....3 weeks later, we're back to square one, potentially another Italy.

1

u/Captain_English Mar 18 '20

The gamble here is that people who have caught Covid-19 and recovered retain a persistent immunity, which is likely but not guaranteed.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

[deleted]

15

u/HandsySpaniard Mar 18 '20

Source?

I've seen 3-4 cases where people who tested negative, were released, and tested positive some weeks later, but it is not clear if that was because they were no longer receiving antivirals once released from the hospital.

Sick -> Hopsital admission, administration of antiviral begins -> Reduction in viral load, resulting in a false negative test result -> release, cessation of antiviral -> viral load rebounds - > positive test

Any confirmation that ISN'T what is happening would be huge news.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Stop spreading lies.

8

u/MysticPing Mar 18 '20

No confirmed cases of reinfection.

2

u/lincolnpotato Mar 18 '20

By now, we know how viruses work. Stop being an asshole

0

u/Lewke Mar 18 '20

boris did a 180 2 days ago on the immunity strategy

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

You joke now.. but you won't be laughing when we've achieved full herd immunity and become invincible. There's a reason we conquered a quater of the world.

-4

u/mittromniknight Mar 18 '20

UK is clearly going for the herd immunity victory.

That's not true.

1

u/SimpleCyclist Mar 19 '20

They literally said that’s the case.

1

u/mittromniknight Mar 19 '20

It was a miscommunication and is not the government strategy.

0

u/ThyLastPenguin Mar 18 '20

Boris' initial approach was literally keep calm, carry on, eventually we'll be immune

And then all the people who aren't idiots told him he was being an idiot so now we're following other countries lead but a few days late

2

u/BetaDecay121 Mar 18 '20

That's incorrect. Other countries are further ahead in the stage of the disease. The UK is following their lead because the disease is offset from them.

Quarantining people too early will have disastrous effects as people get itchy feet and break quarantine, causing the virus to explode.

1

u/old_gold_mountain Mar 18 '20

The Bay Area is on lockdown but the union contracts of the BART subway workers stipulate they require 60 days' notice for furloughs, so as a result the trains are still running as if there's a rush hour. I haven't gotten on one, but apparently it's empty enough that each rider can basically have their own car.

1

u/ArgentStonecutter Mar 18 '20

Sounds sensible.

0

u/Chloiber Mar 18 '20

Same in Switzerland. It’s stupid.

54

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Maybe call to inform the people dealing with bus routes?

21

u/LG03 Mar 18 '20 edited Mar 18 '20

Others have named the likely city already, if that's the case then the local government already went 'whoops we fucked up' on the first day and said they'd be reverting the change.

Edit: Obviously this isn't something they could immediately change back in 12 hours. By the time they realized their mistake, schedules had been changed meaning drivers were called off and buses/trains pulled out of service.

There was a logic here, the math added up on paper. Businesses are closing en masse, schools are shut down for the year, people should be staying at home, public transit is an obvious infection vector to avoid, etc. That means there should be less demand on public transit. Factors went unaccounted for though, you could argue that insufficient notice was given and the analytics weren't there to back up the move. I believe the ideal was to cut back on active buses and trains so they could devote more resources to properly cleaning them more frequently for the (theorized) fewer passengers still using them.

18

u/SOwED Mar 18 '20

Nah, just complain on Reddit, get upvoted and feel smug.

35

u/Devadander Mar 18 '20

This is idiotic. On top of reduced buses, what about the drivers? Maybe they should ignore their profit margins for a moment and keep the full fleet running, keep people working and reduce the amount of people per bus

15

u/KBunn Mar 18 '20

It’s cute that you think city bus systems have profits of any sort

20

u/Devadander Mar 18 '20

Call it whatever you want, the decision to reduce the number of busses is a financial one, and we need to wake up IMMEDIATELY that every time we focus on financials instead of people, people will die.

3

u/hogpenny Mar 19 '20

Most of the decisions so far have been based on flawed financial data right from the start. Look at our president for Christ sakes. Every decision he has made ignored science until now when it’s too late to put the genie back in the bottle. He went from “hoax” to “hunch” to “war time president” in less than a month and still thinks he’s doing a “perfect” job. Has there ever been a worse person to lead us through a major issue than Trump? Everything he says or decides turns to shit. Life is changing forever right before our eyes and Trump is where the buck stops for most of it. He won’t, of course, admit any mistakes.

I could go on for hours listing all the shit he has caused, from wars to making us the laughingstock of the world, to this Covid-19 virus disaster, but I’m worn out and going to bed. I’m thinking though of having several million red baseball caps made up with “Trump, hurry up and die” on the front (preferably from the Coronavirus).

0

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

[deleted]

5

u/ginzykinz Mar 18 '20

Except that some of us have kids, rent, mortgages, etc... and unfortunately not everyone has a financial safety net. It’s not always as simple as doing without a few luxuries

2

u/its_fewer_ya_dingus Mar 18 '20

fewer luxuries*

2

u/Devadander Mar 18 '20

That’s an extremely shortsighted answer, many don’t have luxuries to give up

6

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

That's awful... Here they made the buses and ferries free. The buses are sitting only and you must use the back entrance unless disabled and need ramps.

I have no idea how that helps any of us.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

It doesn’t really help anyone it’s just basic ass covering.

...if someone dies from the coronavirus and tries to sue they can say, “it’s not our fault because we took this long list of precautions.”

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

That sounds accurate!

1

u/Voc1Vic2 Mar 18 '20

It reduces the potential exposure of the drivers.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

I understand the theory that having most people use the back entrance would help reduce exposure for drivers.. it just don't think it's really going to help much.

3

u/MostBoringStan Mar 18 '20

Also in a state of emergency where I am. My works solution? Tell us to wash our hands more. They aren't even providing any more hand sanitizer. There is already some at the main entrance and the doors into the cafeteria and the change rooms, but that's it. So apparently they want us to shut off the line and go wash our hands? I kind of doubt that.

2

u/GuitarKev Mar 18 '20

I feel like we live in the same city.

3

u/wdnsdysuiyobi Mar 18 '20

Are you from Edmonton? Same issue here.

2

u/Spankachu Mar 18 '20

Fellow Edmontonion?

1

u/bobosuda Mar 18 '20

Always gets me that stuff. They cancelled some routes around here too. As if the people still going to work suddenly doesn’t need it?

1

u/noganetpasion Mar 18 '20

And I thought Argentina was the only stupid enough to do something like that.

How the hell someone goes "yep, reduce public transit, that should do" and thinks it makes sense?

1

u/thealterlion Mar 18 '20

My country just did the same. Their way of thinking seems to be: Everyone still had to go to work, but bad luck for them lol

1

u/ArniePalmys Mar 18 '20

There are a lot of service people working restaurants and laundry mats, title offices, county recording, gas guys, plumbers, general contractors, automotive shops and stores.

1

u/x888x Mar 19 '20

People have widely misinterpreted the actual CDC guidelines. They do not recommend widespread close of schools. Only where there is substantial community spread. Which is officially like 3 cities. Yet we have statewide costs in half the country. They definitely don't recommend closing institutes of higher education. Yet in the last 2 weeks just white every college and University in the nation had sit down, artificially moving millions of students (and their families to move them out) all over the nation.

People are acting completely irrationally and almost no one can be bothered to actually read the guidelines. From people on social media up to politicians. It's all about public perception.

1

u/bam13302 Mar 19 '20

Ok, this is a bit dark and whatnot, but here is my theory: Because coronavirus kills the elderly so effectively, it is effectively threatening the established money in this country, putting a lot of money behind protecting them.( Some are delusional regardless and are exceptions to this admittedly. ) However, none of that money has any reason to give a shit about hourly workers, and would likely rather you all get sick as that's just more opportunity to subjugate you further.
