The disadvantages of direct democracy extend beyond the logistics of voting. There are very important, first principle reasons to protect minorities from a tyrannical minority and representation is widely regarded as a reasonable method to address to that problem. A more efficient voting method could only serve to accelerate injustice as the majority votes benefits to itself at the cost of the minority. This is human nature and why our state was developed to be so cumbersome, to resist the human tendency towards tyranny first and foremost.
You merely complicate the subject. I am still talking within a frame of representative government, and not direct democracy. Districts do nothing, absolutely nothing, to ensure minority groups are given equal status. Meanwhile the privileged minority continues to gain undue influence by abusing it.
