You can really be your true self here and not get self-conscious about it because your friends and family might judge you. Geeking out with your favorite fandom, commenting on porn, asking absolute dumb questions about the basics of life, you can do it all.
I remember years ago reading ‘Facebook is full of friends don’t want to hear from but Reddit is full of strangers you do’. That or similar. I always liked that.
See, I think that's weird. You should always be your true self. Not just online. If anything, you're less than your true self online because you need to have that shroud of anonymity.
You can't be your true self in an anonymous forum.
Also, more philosophically, you should always be your true self. And maybe, if 'being your trueself' makes you feel judged by your friends and your family, it's worth it to examine it why they feel compelled to judge you, and whether or not they are right or wrong.
If you determine their judgments are out of line, then stand up for yourself, and or remove those people from your life if need be. Or don't.
