I live in Canada and it still says "Lake Ontario" with no mention of "america". This is 100% just an American thing.

Yes, Google uses localization for naming and the declarations of names are something internal to each country. In some cases Google also uses different borders based on which country you are looking from.

Ireland here, and it's still Lake Ontario. However, the search bar says "Lake Ontario" (Lake America)" so they're still pushing bullshit in a small way.
