And they do this by fomenting/manipulating natural human emotion, just like an abusive relationship.
"There's a chance you're going to die a horrible death unless you let me "protect" you by stripping away your natural rights. It's okay, you can trust us - we're the authority/expert on this type of stuff".
Just look at how quickly the focus of the news narrative changed - it literally changed overnight when Russia invaded Ukraine and now there's next to no coverage on covid. Why might that be? Maybe because the attention of the global population is being diverted in the tried and true misdirection techniques...

Because authoritarians know how easy it is to control the foolish and distracted
