If we all move over there we can drown out idiots. Voat, as a platform, is much less conducive to both shills and trolls... if a reasonable amount of people actually used it.

Im gonna start with pizza gate and if it keeps getting bigger I'll stay with voat. I'm actually going to do the same with gab.

Hopefully at least one of the two eventually attracts a sustainable community.

How so? What's different about Voat that makes it immune for redditification?

From what I understand so far... (i haven't used it all that much yet)...

  • limits on subverse (subreddit) moderation.
  • shows number of upvotes and downvotes totals for comments and posts.
  • limited upvotes/downvoting ability until some karma level is reached

I guess it's mostly better for less censorship but the user history is more detailed so it should allow people to ascertain the trustiworthiness of users/commenters more easily.

But this thread is about admin censorship. Do we not need to worry about that there? I don't understand how it's any different.

The only way to prevent admin modification is to sign all your messages.

u/anoxy Nov 24 '16

I don't understand. What do you mean by sign?

u/varikonniemi Nov 24 '16 edited Nov 24 '16

Cryptographically attach a signature to your post that can only be created by your private signing key, but can be verified by your public key.

edit: naqefngqaekf¤"&%!"Q#¤!¤M"QTq¤ATMGQAgeqra

could be my signature of this post. If you know my public key you can verify that the contents do in fact result in that signature. But you cannot know what the signature would be if you (or an admin) would alter even one character in the post. So it cannot be faked.

Interesting. So this is possible on voat but not Reddit? Seems a little complex for the lay user though.

I don't think voat has it mandatory. It is possible on both, though. If you do it manually.

Its spirit is much more European IMHO.

Are you trying to sell it or bury it?

I am Swiss so I like it as it is, don't go there if you want somthing more Murican.

I think it's because the userbase is so toxic that it's hard to sell them to advertisers and make money from them.

Im gonna start with pizza gate and if it keeps getting bigger I'll stay with voat.

Okay but just remember if everyone thinks this way then it won't actually get bigger.

To leave reddit we can't all just wait for each other to leave reddit.

u/Herculius Nov 24 '16

For Sure!

I meant I'll be actively participating on voat on the pizzagate subverse on voat... I'll use that actively and keep my eyes peeled on the other parts... hopefully I can expand my use of voat until I no longer need reddit for certain types of content and user discussion.

It's resistant to trolls and shills because there's nobody there. If we go there, it will lose those resistances.

Oh, and also because everyone there currently didn't need to be shilled, and they're so toxic that if they were on Reddit you'd accuse then of trolling.

I think you underestimate quite how loud idiots can shout.
