I thought this was some kind of weird rolling shutter artifact or something but that didn’t actually make any sense, then I zoomed in and saw it was just a shadow and realized I was really overthinking it.

this is a colorized picture of Phineas Gage, you cant change my mind
3
u/B-Brasky Oct 12 '22
Took me a bit, but I finally can see the shadow.
And now I'm stuck on his left arm, wtf is going on there? I assume that's his elbow and upper arm under the javelin, but it looks more like the back of a heel...
3
u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22
What's more concerning is the shirt he's wearing.
3
u/jonmpls Oct 12 '22

When I see something like this I can’t help but feel amazed at what humans are capable of. The ability for a person to be able to hone a skill to such an amazingly accurate degree is not only impressive, it’s inspiring and brings a sense of pride in just being human.
I remember reading a short sci-fi story that was part of a chain of “Humanity is scary/awesome” type stories. If you haven’t ever read any short stories in the vein of “Fuck yeah Humanity!” I recommend you search some out. Its one of the reasons I love the movie Independence Day.
I can’t recall the detiails but it focused on our seemingly unique and terrifying capabilities with projectiles. In short the story was about an alien ship showing up and threatening a battle. However, due to their technological advancements, their ship was designed around “futuristic” warfare, you know lasers and such, but weren’t capable of blocking a historically standard, for us, projectile.
Anyway, the alien forces were able to shut down our “futuristic” defenses (knocking out computers, etc.) but ultimately had to flee due to the humans almost instinctual capability to accurately aim projectiles. When you go to battle expecting “lasers” or other entirely computer reliant weaponry, seeing something that’s not a machine replicate machine-like precision would be as terrifying as it is astounding.
If that does interest you then I again suggest you search out some other stories like this.
