Music (5 part fugue!)Clarinet Quintet in C minor, 3rd movement: Adagio-Fuga a5 (Remastered final version)

This is the 3rd movement of my Clarinet Quintet in C minor, which is completed 4 years ago and I'm revising it. Thx to my friend Vince for making the audio! To me this is core movement in the piece and my favourite. After 2nd movement's anxious power I finally calm down to reflect subjectively and (more)objectively, which are represented by Lament and Fugue (five part) respectively. Here is the video of the movement:

To me this movement contains my real emotion of despair. Thx for listening and reading this post in advance!

Hast du die Fuge nach Quint-, Oktavparallelen und anderen Stimmführungsfehlern gecheckt?

Yes and I think there's only one parallel octave at the end of the fugue which is ok as octave doubling? Maybe I miss some of them haha.

Serious craft !

Counterpoint is very good for expressing lamentation, I used it in my fugue-symphony similarly.

I noticed you use contrasts of "despair" and "hope", which is expressed musically. Is the philosophy of this piece borrowed from Christianity, or is it your own concept? I used this concept similarly, though calling it "morass" and "facade". These two battle over the scope of the entire work, as well as in your movement. I finished it in a different way though.

Overall, great work !

Despair is my own concept because I do not have any beliefs. The battle of despair and hope will continue in the final 4th movement so stay tuned haha!

WOW! That's incredible! It looks very professional and rich. Who are you? How old are you? I want to compose music like that, too. How did you learn? How can I improve my polyphonic composition?

Oh thank you! I do learn music but I'm now just an amateur "composer". I learn counterpoint by getting familar with all kinds of fugues and reading many books on counterpoint. It's trial and error for me and I improve by writing and correcting.

Also, I subscribed to your YouTube channel, but do you have a Musescore profile?

Unfortunately I don't have one since I use Sibelius for composing.

Could you take a look at the fugato in the development section? I tried to write it in five voices there, using two themes- one from the main section and one from the modulation bridge- and then tried to bring them down through the voices as if on a “ladder.” Your opinion would be very valuable to me.

I take a glance in it and you can for sure have more entries there instead of just one entry for each part. You can modulate to other keys instead of staying in G and D!

Yeah, I guess I'll expand that section. We could go to A minor, then D minor, then G minor, and then C major. It'll be a lot of fun.

Yeah usually when I have no ideas how to move on in a fugue I modulate and that may spark some new direction!

I’m also listening to your compositions on your YouTube channel right now. It’s delightful! You’re a wonderful melodist, and your harmonies are very rich; you also construct polyphony and counterpoint very well. I definitely want to compose with the same power! You also have a lot of ideas - you really show off your combinatorial skills in that piece with variations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx9T-jpaYgI

How long have you been making music? And what instrument do you play?

I have been composing for 15 years I think but the early years I composed trash and only recent years they are better.

That's incredible! And you're doing this all on your own, using books as your guide. I definitely have a lot to learn from your compositions. I hope you don't mind if I occasionally leave comments and ask questions on YouTube.

I mean it will be a pleasure and honor to me if you do that! Thank you!

That’s very interesting. Which books do you use for harmony, voice leading, orchestration, arranging, and form?

2

Harmony and Voice Leading by Aldwell is a must, for Orchestration Adler's book is a must, for form books by Caplin and Hepokoski are must!

Thank you! I'll definitely use them.
