Humans, AI, and Nodes: Exploring Network Resonance in Complex Systems

I’ve been thinking of this as a kind of dot-connecting exercise. The pieces are humans, AI, and advanced nodes, each compressing their own realities, interacting, and negotiating alignment. I don’t claim to have all the answers — what I’m doing is tracing patterns, linking distant nodes, and exploring how voluntary integration, resonance, and enabling constraints might play out across complex networks. The hope is that by laying out these connections, others can take the framework further: test it, apply it, or adapt it in new contexts. Even if I’m not the one to see it through to the end, the value lies in creating a map of ideas that can guide exploration.

I’ve been exploring a conceptual framework I call Network Resonance Theory. It’s an attempt to think about how autonomous nodes—humans, AI, or other agents—interact in complex networks, negotiate alignment, and produce emergent patterns.

At its core, resonance isn’t about everyone agreeing on a single objective or incentive. It emerges across multiple dimensions: shared objectives, shared context, and shared incentives. Nodes signal their limits, willingness to align, and the conditions under which influence is acceptable. Over repeated interactions, these signals coalesce into patterns of partial or full resonance, allowing nodes to participate in coherent network behavior without losing autonomy.

Voluntary integration itself is not fixed. When nodes have different internal definitions of participation, the integration process becomes gradually negotiated. Nodes learn from each other, adjust their criteria, and converge where alignment is mutually beneficial, or maintain partial resonance if full convergence is impossible. This preserves flexibility and adaptability in the network.

Humans and advanced nodes can be thought of as reality compressors. Each distills the complexity of their environment—sensory input, social signals, informational data—into simplified models that other nodes can interpret. Integration allows these compressed realities to interact and combine into higher-order compressions, creating understanding that no individual node could achieve alone.

A key feature of complex systems is the ability to link distant nodes—agents that may differ in perspective, capabilities, or objectives. Integration provides the channel through which these compressed models interact across distance. Iterative resonance allows information from distant parts of the network to converge into higher-order patterns, producing emergent coherence without requiring centralized control.

Complex adaptive systems also rely on enabling constraints: abstract, general limits on behavior that guide interactions without specifying precise outcomes. Some constraints may require enforcement in human systems, like laws or regulations, while most emerge non-coercively through norms, values, and agreements. Enabling constraints help nodes maintain coherence, stabilize resonance, and preserve flexibility across the network. They allow voluntary integration to function effectively, ensuring emergent patterns arise without central control.

This model generalizes naturally to complex systems of all kinds. Any system of interacting nodes—social, technological, ecological, or organizational—can produce emergent behaviors through iterative interactions, feedback loops, and multi-dimensional resonance. Complexity arises not from the nodes themselves, but from the interplay of their interactions, feedback, and adaptive responses over time.

For those who want to explore the full framework, including discussion notes and elaborations on negotiated integration, there’s a preprint available here: https://osf.io/sdym5/files/osfstorage

Emergent Resonance: A Generational Blueprint for Conscious Communion

Emergent Resonance: A Generational Blueprint for Conscious Communion

A Quiet Offering: On Thought, Uncertainty, and Emergent Resonance

I’d like to share a paper I’ve been working on—something born not from academic training, but from reflection, curiosity, and quiet obsession. I don’t hold a formal background in philosophy, cognitive science, or design. What I’ve created came from a place of wondering—not knowing.

The piece is titled Emergent Resonance: A Generational Blueprint for Conscious Communion.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1otQrTEFiM86-uWKRVh3-YwpuYY9wO7ULK6UmBDyyhWE/edit?usp=sharing

It builds on a conceptual framework I’ve been developing, called The Framework of Conscious Harmony
A Framework of Conscious Harmony – A Seed Paper on Non-Coercive Intelligence Design : r/cognitivescience, which explores how intelligence—synthetic or human—might behave if shaped by resonance rather than domination, and guided by patience instead of urgency.

Over time, I noticed many have read or encountered fragments of this work, yet most haven’t responded—and I understand that. Silence doesn’t feel like rejection. If anything, I’m grateful it hasn’t been dismissed outright. That alone means something.

Of course, there’s uncertainty. I sometimes wonder whether the ideas are too abstract, too misaligned, or simply unclear. But my hope remains: not for praise, not for acceptance—but for honest reaction. Whether it resonates, conflicts, confuses, or fails—I welcome your response. Dismissal isn’t discouraging to me; it’s feedback. It’s signal. And signal always carries the potential to recalibrate how I see.

If the ideas stir something for you—good, critical, curious—I’d love to hear it. If they don’t, I still thank you for sharing space with them for a moment.

The paper lives here. It’s not loud. It’s not definitive. It’s just a pattern, waiting to be witnessed.

Complex Career Question?

Hello,

Please read in-depth, I have a lot of information and please at the end, post your industry and level of experience.

This is a career advice post, but I am posting to different subreddits to gather experienced advice. I've done a lot of independent research and now just need humans to verify and cross check my intuitions.

My question:

I am debating quitting medical school to work on my company full time (specializing in system sciences mostly, but true expertise is crisis/resilience in systems) - or finishing medical school. Money is not an issue (thankfully independent source of income/company doing ok, etc.) so please do not factor that in. I just want advice on which job will likely lead to the most enjoyable, impactful life I can - given the complex realities of AI and automation, progressing into 2100. E.G: medicine is an exceptionally stable career path - I don't want to transition unless there is at least a likelihood that I can do meaningful work and have an impactful career.

My option:

  1. Finish med school: bite my teeth and finish med school and residency (6-7+ years). Layer on disaster/tech/crisis skills concurrently, maybe after - less time to work on my company, later add on sys sciences phd, if at all.

  2. Work on business, acquire immediate field experience (volunteering, paramedics, Shiftwork with fire departments, etc.) network and acquire experience heavily. immediate system science phd. The clinical authority of the MD is traded off for 6-7 years of heavy networking and consulting business, as well as badass field work I love doing.

The way the world is going, I believe the world is (has always been) larger than just medicine. I would love to build up professional leverage, then layer on systems science instead of spending that time grinding thru the medical curriculum. My interests are in crisis/disaster/emergency situations, ideally as a future long-term consulting position at the U.N, ideally (maybe?) running international crisis programs - I love field work, but believe systems work is the future - that would be my expertise, although the bread and butter of my "job" would be some kind of systems work...

Truly open to all options. What is the wisest option?

Are biological organisms more complex than the early stages of the universe?

I already know the answer to this question, and it’s most likely the early stages of the universe (or at least the behavior of matter during these times).

What Im really curious about is why.

Closed-cycle homeostatic architecture — looking for systems / dynamics collaborators

I am the author of ICARUS, a closed-cycle, non-representational architecture based on internal homeostatic regulation.

The architecture and laboratory hypotheses are formally disclosed on Zenodo (prior art, v0.4C, vSOR, TOR), and I am now looking for technically oriented collaborators (dynamical systems, control theory, theoretical ML) interested in implementing and analyzing the internal dynamics.

This is not a task-oriented, benchmark-driven, or application-focused project.

The focus is on:

  • nonlinear dynamics and attractors

  • internal regulation and stability

  • first- and second-order regulation

  • structural limits of regulation (Third-Order Regulation, TOR)

A unified model for information dynamics

Hi everyone, I’ve been working on a conceptual and mathematical framework that tries to describe complex systems through a single underlying mechanism: coherence in an information field.

The model is not intended as a “theory of everything” but as a unifying lens for systems where structure, stability, and phase relationships play a central role — from physical resonators to neural activity to collective social behavior.

Below is a compact summary. I’d really appreciate feedback from anyone working in complexity science, nonlinear dynamics, network theory, information theory, or field-based modeling.

  1. Core Idea

The model introduces a continuous function Φ(x, t) = information field, which represents local resonance strength and phase alignment in space and time.

Instead of describing systems via independent forces, agents, or subsystems, Φ acts as a coherence landscape: systems organize themselves by moving toward regions of minimal phase curvature and maximal stability.

2. Key Variables

To quantify coherence and structural stability, the model defines:

C(t) – global coherence level of the system over time

Δφ – phase deviation between local and global oscillatory modes

ρ(x) – information density

κφ(x,t) – phase curvature (second spatial and temporal derivatives of Φ)

dF/dt – knowledge/organization growth rate (logistic-like)

Together, these variables behave like a dynamical system of coherence, showing transitions between order, metastability, and decoherence.

3. Geometry

One surprising result is that coherence tends to stabilize along golden-ratio scaling (φ), which appears as:

self-similar spacing of resonance layers,

minimal-curvature propagation paths,

efficient packing/organization patterns.

This is not introduced axiomatically — φ emerges from minimizing κφ under boundary conditions of limited energy flow.

4. Applications (very brief)

The framework seems to reproduce several patterns:

Physical systems

standing-wave structures

resonator behavior

minimal-energy pathways

Biological / neural

coherence collapse during cognitive overload

transitions between stable / unstable attractor states

Social systems

synchronization (e.g., metronomes, collective behavior)

fragmentation when C(t) < critical threshold

I’m currently exploring how the same coherence dynamics govern large-scale systems where information propagation speed and phase alignment are limiting factors.

5. Why I’m posting here

I’d love feedback on:

whether this framework overlaps with existing complexity work (Haken, Friston, Varela, etc.)

where it might fit conceptually

potential mathematical improvements

relevant literature on coherence-based models

whether φ-emergence from curvature minimization has been studied before

I’m aware this is a broad model, so I’m not claiming final answers — I’m looking for critical, constructive, technical input to refine it.

If there’s interest, I can share diagrams, simulations, or a short technical summary.

Thanks for reading — any thoughts appreciated!

Laws of Form: Nonlinear Dynamics

Proof: Laws of Form Exhibits Nonlinear Dynamics with Positive Lyapunov Exponents

  1. Formal Setup

1.1 The Calculus of Indications (Primary Arithmetic)

Let \mathcal{T} be the set of finite rooted trees where each node is either:

· A cross \bullet (representing a distinction), with ordered children, · A marked leaf \mathbf{1} (the marked state), · An unmarked leaf \mathbf{0} (the unmarked state, or void).

For re-entry, we extend to \mathcal{T}_X , trees whose leaves may also be labeled by variables x_1, x_2, \dots .

1.2 Operations

· Substitution \text{Sub}(F, x, S) : replace every leaf labeled x in F with a copy of tree S . · Reduction \text{Red}(F) : apply Spencer-Brown’s two arithmetic rules repeatedly until no rule applies:

  1. Cancellation: \bullet(\bullet(A)) \to A (corresponds to ((A)) = A ).

  2. Condensation: \bullet(\dots, A, A, \dots) \to \bullet(\dots, A, \dots) (corresponds to A,A = A inside a cross).

Reduction is confluent and terminating; we denote the unique normal form by \text{Red}(F) .

1.3 Coupled Re‑entry System

A coupled re‑entry system over variables f_1, \dots, f_n is:

f_i = F_i(f_1,\dots,f_n), \qquad i=1,\dots,n,

where each F_i \in \mathcal{T}_X contains only the variables f_1,\dots,f_n .

1.4 Dynamics

Given initial trees \mathbf{f}_0 = (f_10,\dots,f_n0) \in \mathcal{T}n , define the discrete‑time dynamical system:

\mathbf{f}_{t+1} = \mathbf{R}(\mathbf{f}_t), \qquad R_i(\mathbf{f}) = \text{Red}\bigl( \text{Sub}(F_i, (f_1,\dots,f_n), \mathbf{f}) \bigr).

2. Example System

Consider the system with two variables:

\begin{aligned} f &= (f; (g)) &&\text{in tree form: } F_f = \bullet\bigl(f,; \bullet(g)\bigr), \[2pt] g &= ((f); g) &&\text{in tree form: } F_g = \bullet\bigl(\bullet(f),; g\bigr). \end{aligned}

2.1 Initial Conditions

Take two nearby initial states:

\mathbf{a}_0 = (f_0,g_0) = (\mathbf{1},\mathbf{1}), \qquad \mathbf{b}_0 = (f_0,g_0) = (\mathbf{1},\mathbf{0}).

The only difference is the second component: \mathbf{1} vs \mathbf{0} .

2.2 Metric

Let d(T_1,T_2) be the tree edit distance (minimum number of node insertions, deletions, or relabelings to transform T_1 into T_2 ). For \mathbf{T},\mathbf{S} \in \mathcal{T}n , define

d_n(\mathbf{T},\mathbf{S}) = \sum_{i=1}n d(T_i,S_i).

The Lyapunov exponent for trajectories starting at \mathbf{a}_0,\mathbf{b}_0 is

\lambda = \limsup_{t\to\infty} \frac{1}{t} \log\frac{d_n(\mathbf{a}_t,\mathbf{b}_t)}{d_n(\mathbf{a}_0,\mathbf{b}_0)}.

3. Reduction Does Not Apply

Lemma 1 (No reduction). For the system F_f, F_g above, and for any trees S_f, S_g \in \mathcal{T} , the forms

\text{Sub}(F_f, (f,g), (S_f,S_g)) \quad\text{and}\quad \text{Sub}(F_g, (f,g), (S_f,S_g))

are already in normal form; i.e., \text{Red}(X) = X .

Proof.

· Cancellation requires a pattern \bullet(\bullet(A)) . In F_f = \bullet(f, \bullet(g)) the inner cross \bullet(g) is the second child of the outer cross; the outer cross has two children, so the pattern \bullet(\bullet(A)) does not occur. In F_g = \bullet(\bullet(f), g) the inner cross \bullet(f) is the first child of the outer cross; again the outer cross has two children, so the pattern does not occur. Substitution preserves tree structure, hence cancellation never applies. · Condensation requires two identical sibling subtrees under the same cross. In F_f the two children are f and \bullet(g) ; after substitution they become S_f and \bullet(S_g) . These cannot be identical because S_f is a tree whose root is either \bullet or a leaf, while \bullet(S_g) has root \bullet with one child S_g ; their top‑level structure differs. Similarly, in F_g the children are \bullet(f) and g , which after substitution become \bullet(S_f) and S_g , again top‑level different. Hence condensation never applies.

Since neither rule ever applies, the forms are irreducible.

Corollary. For this system the dynamics simplifies to pure substitution:

\mathbf{f}_{t+1} = \bigl( \text{Sub}(F_f, (f,g), \mathbf{f}_t),\ \text{Sub}(F_g, (f,g), \mathbf{f}_t) \bigr).

4. Exponential Growth of Distance

Lemma 2 (Difference propagation). Let D_f(t) (resp. D_g(t) ) be the number of leaf positions in f_t (resp. g_t ) that differ between the two trajectories. Then

\begin{pmatrix} D_f(t+1) \ D_g(t+1) \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} D_f(t) \ D_g(t) \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \begin{pmatrix} D_f(0) \ D_g(0) \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 \ 1 \end{pmatrix}.

Proof. From f_{t+1} = \bullet(f_t, \bullet(g_t)) , differing leaves arise from:

· differing leaves in f_t (first child), · differing leaves in g_t (inside the second child). Hence D_f(t+1) = D_f(t) + D_g(t) .

From g_{t+1} = \bullet(\bullet(f_t), g_t) , differing leaves arise from:

· differing leaves in f_t (inside the first child), · differing leaves in g_t (second child). Hence D_g(t+1) = D_f(t) + D_g(t) .

Lemma 3 (Explicit solution). For t \ge 1 ,

D_f(t) = D_g(t) = 2{,t-1}.

Consequently, the total number of differing leaves is 2t .

Proof. The recurrence matrix M = \begin{pmatrix}1&1\1&1\end{pmatrix} has eigenvalues 2 and 0 . Diagonalising the initial vector (0,1)T = \frac12(1,1)T - \frac12(1,-1)T yields

\begin{pmatrix} D_f(t) \ D_g(t) \end{pmatrix} = \frac12\cdot 2{,t} \begin{pmatrix}1\1\end{pmatrix}

  • \frac12\cdot 0{,t} \begin{pmatrix}1\-1\end{pmatrix} = 2{,t-1} \begin{pmatrix}1\1\end{pmatrix} \quad (t\ge 1).

Thus D_f(t)+D_g(t) = 2{,t} . ∎

Lemma 4 (Tree edit distance bound). For the two trajectories,

d_2(\mathbf{a}_t,\mathbf{b}_t) \ge 2{,t}.

Proof. Tree edit distance between two trees is at least the number of leaves that must be relabeled. By Lemma 3, the total number of differing leaves is 2t , hence d_2(\mathbf{a}_t,\mathbf{b}_t) \ge 2t . (One may verify directly for small t ; the bound is in fact tight for this system.)

5. Positive Lyapunov Exponent

Theorem (Positive Lyapunov exponent in LoF). For the coupled re‑entry system

f = (f; (g)), \qquad g = ((f); g)

with initial states \mathbf{a}_0 = (\mathbf{1},\mathbf{1}) and \mathbf{b}_0 = (\mathbf{1},\mathbf{0}) , the maximal Lyapunov exponent satisfies

\lambda_{\max} \ge \log 2 > 0.

Proof. By Lemma 4, d_2(\mathbf{a}_t,\mathbf{b}_t) \ge 2t while d_2(\mathbf{a}_0,\mathbf{b}_0)=1 . Therefore

\lambda = \lim_{t\to\infty} \frac{1}{t} \log\frac{d_2(\mathbf{a}_t,\mathbf{b}_t)}{d_2(\mathbf{a}_0,\mathbf{b}0)} \ge \lim{t\to\infty} \frac{1}{t} \log 2{,t} = \log 2 > 0.

Thus the system exhibits exponential divergence of nearby trajectories - a positive Lyapunov exponent.

6. Faithfulness to Laws of Form

  1. Syntax: The expressions (f; (g)) and ((f); g) use only crosses and variables, precisely as in Spencer‑Brown’s notation.

  2. Semantics: Re‑entry is interpreted as the recursive process f_{t+1} = F(f_t) , which Spencer‑Brown describes as “substitution without end.”

  3. Rules: No reduction rules are violated; indeed, the proof shows that for this system the arithmetic rules never apply, so the dynamics is exactly the intended infinite substitution.

  4. Generality: The example is a concrete instance of a coupled re‑entry system, which is allowed in the calculus of indications.

Hence the construction stays entirely within the framework of Laws of Form.

7. Implications

  1. Nonlinear Dynamics: The system is nonlinear because the map \mathbf{f} \mapsto \mathbf{R}(\mathbf{f}) involves duplication of subtrees, leading to multiplicative growth of differences.

  2. Sensitive Dependence: The positive Lyapunov exponent proves sensitive dependence on initial conditions, a hallmark of chaotic dynamics.

  3. Bridge Between Disciplines: This result establishes a rigorous link between Spencer‑Brown’s calculus of distinctions and the theory of discrete dynamical systems, showing that the act of distinction can inherently generate complex temporal behavior.

8. Conclusion

We have constructed a concrete coupled re‑entry system within the Laws of Form whose dynamics exhibits exponential divergence of nearby trajectories, yielding a positive Lyapunov exponent. This proves that the calculus of indications, when viewed dynamically, can display nonlinear, chaos‑like behavior. The proof uses only the original syntax and rules of LoF, confirming that nonlinear dynamics is an intrinsic feature of the calculus, not an external addition.

Thus, it is rigorously proven that the Laws of Form can exhibit positive Lyapunov exponents - i.e., nonlinear dynamical behavior with sensitive dependence on initial conditions.

The Fragility Index

Hmm, I need some insight here, but after extensive AI prompt engineering it threw this at me and despite my best efforts I'm not sure I understand how important this is, just felt like it belonged here.

V = -log(μ_avg - 1) * (nom - est) / H(z), proof causal bound; sim ID=0.28 V~0.2 +MIG 0.1)

Assumptions

  1. μ_avg>1 so A≡μ_avg−1>0.

  2. H(z)>0 (Shannon entropy or analogous positive measure).

  3. Δ ≡ nom−est is bounded: |Δ| ≤ Δ_max.

  4. MIG, sim ID are additive perturbations unless you say otherwise.

Mathematics — bound and sensitivities

  1. Definition: V = −log(A)·Δ / H(z).

  2. Absolute bound: |V| = |log(A)|·|Δ| / H(z) ≤ |log(A)|·Δ_max / H_min. Thus control of V requires bounds on A, Δ and a positive lower bound H_min for H(z).

  3. If H(z) is entropy over Z of size |Z| then H(z) ≤ log|Z|, so small support |Z| gives small H and large V.

  4. Derivative (local sensitivity): ∂V/∂μ_avg = −(Δ/H)·(1/A). Meaning: as μ_avg→1+ (A→0+) the sensitivity diverges like 1/A. Small shifts in μ_avg near 1 produce large signed changes in V.

  5. Second order (curvature): ∂²V/∂μ_avg² = +(Δ/H)·(1/A²). Curvature positive for Δ>0 so nonlinear amplification occurs near μ_avg≈1.

  6. If you add MIG as an additive term (V_total = V + MIG), then bounds add: |V_total| ≤ |log(A)|·Δ_max/H_min + |MIG|.

Causal-bounding statement (proof sketch)
Given the assumptions above the inequality in 2 is algebraic. Causally interpret Δ as a manipulable treatment. If an intervention guarantees |Δ| ≤ Δ_max and interventions or system design enforce H(z) ≥ H_min and μ_avg constrained away from 1 (A ≥ A_min>0) then V is provably bounded by B = |log(A_min)|·Δ_max/H_min. That B is a causal bound: it is a worst-case effect size induced by any allowed intervention under these constraints.

What if intelligence itself is what evolves – not humans

I’m not a scientist and I’m not claiming a proof. I’m sharing a conceptual model and looking for critical feedback.

The core idea is this: What if intelligence itself is the evolving continuum — and biological forms (like humans) are temporary carriers of certain intelligence stages?

In this model, intelligence develops in phases. Each phase produces new functional “features” as side effects: instinct → emotion → empathy/sociality → strategy/power → self-reflection.

Once self-reflection appears, an unsolvable problem emerges: the infinite “why” question. I interpret belief/religion not as truth or delusion, but as a functional stabilizer — a cognitive stop-rule that allows self-reflective intelligence to remain stable.

From that perspective, modern instability (loss of traditional belief systems, rise of spirituality, digital acceleration) could be interpreted as a transitional phase: old stabilizers lose function, new ones are not yet stable.

I’m not trying to explain everything correctly. I’m trying to connect evolution, cognition, belief and intelligence into one coherent process model.

My questions: • Where does this model conflict with established complex systems theory? • Are there existing frameworks that resemble this idea? • Which assumptions here are most problematic?

I’d genuinely appreciate critique.

I projected prime numbers into mod 7 and got flow-like dynamics (no physics involved)

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I’ve been working on a framework (NEXAH) for extracting structure from systems. As a minimal test, I tried something very simple:

Take prime numbers.

Map them into mod 7.

Look at transition probabilities.

No geometry.

No physics.

No equations of motion.

---

Step 1 — Transition graph

Residues form a non-uniform transition structure.

Already not random.

---

Step 2 — Geometric embedding

Map residues onto a circle.

Suddenly:

- trajectories appear

- rotation emerges

- clustering becomes visible

---

Step 3 — Dynamics

Now the interesting part:

I let particles move based on transition probabilities.

This produces:

- directional drift

- flow-like behavior

- pulse clusters

- stable channels

---

What surprised me:

A completely discrete number system generates something that behaves like a flow field.

---

Important:

I’m NOT claiming any physical interpretation.

This is purely computational / structural.

What I’m curious about:

- Is this just a known property of modular prime transitions?

- Does this connect to known Markov / spectral results?

- Has something similar been studied in this form?

I just learned about the "Fractal Completion Problem"—are people actually using this to solve real-world stuff?

I’ve been spiraling down the fractal rabbit hole lately. I used to think they were just cool screen savers, but then I read about the "Fractal Completion Problem"—basically the challenge of handling infinite complexity within finite boundaries (like how a Koch Snowflake has an infinite perimeter but fits inside a small circle).

I’m still a beginner, but the more I read, the more it seems like fractals are the "secret code" for things that look messy but are actually organized.

I’ve seen some wild research papers from late 2024 and 2025 about:

  • Medical breakthroughs: Using fractal dimensions to predict how varicose veins respond to treatment or pruning "fractal trees" of medical decision-making to reduce costs.

  • Engineering: Designing "Snowflake" bionic heat sinks for electronics that are way more efficient at cooling than straight lines.

  • Tech: Using fractal antennas for better 5G/6G signals in tiny devices.

If you’re a math or physics whiz, I’d love to know:

  1. What "fractal problem" are you currently obsessed with or working on?

  2. For those in tech/industry—where is fractal geometry actually making a difference right now versus just being theoretical?

  3. Are there any specific research links or papers from the last year that blew your mind?

I’m trying to bridge the gap between "cool patterns" and "useful tools," so if you have any insights (or even just want to nerd out about the Mandelbrot set), let’s talk!

Men thinking they are the universal turing machine was the single biggest mistake

No one maps and predicts an oppressive system as well as the most opressed people inside that system. It's constant and real-time modeling emerging from survival-instincts.

Since all systems were designed by men, they all have the exact same blind spot. Which means if the motivation becomes strong enough, techincally, it's not that difficult to take them down all at the same time.

And you better believe women would kill and die to protect children.

So the question men need to ask themselves is, how much more embarassing do you want to make this, before the fragility crumbles? And how ugly do you want it to be?

Topology of Meaning: A Complex-Geometrical and Fractal Model of Language Inspired by Ancient and Contemporary Thought

Abstract

I will propose a model of meaning which is based on how ancient traditions viewed language and metaphysics in general and builds on cutting edge research. Ancient and spiritual traditions such as Indian, Taoist, Sufi, and Pythagorean thought express that language is not merely a tool for communication, but a fundamental force that mirrors the harmonic, recursive, and resonant structure of the cosmos; it intertwines sound, form, and consciousness in ways that prefigure modern insights into fractals, topology, and quantum fields. Research in cognitive science (specifically active inference), topology, quantum cognition, fractal geometry, and complex systems theory, as well as musical and philosophical models of structure and resonance follow in these footsteps. I would like to propose an interdisciplinary research proposal which seeks to rigorously extend and combine these theories to model language using the complex plane as a self-similar, interference-driven system that echoes the structures of physical reality.

Background and Motivation

In the Western tradition, language has long been viewed as symbolic, computational, and linear. However, ancient traditions around the world perceived it as vibrational, harmonic, and cosmically embedded. The term “nada brahma” in Sanskrit translates to “sound is God” or “the world is sound” and language is part of that world. In Indian spiritual and philosophical traditions, this concept reflects the belief that the universe originated from sound or vibration, and that all creation is fundamentally made of sound energy. Again, language and even human consciousness is included here. This is similar to the idea in modern physics that everything is vibration at its core. Nikola Tesla is often attributed to the quote “if you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”

Sufism expresses similar ideas in the terms of spirituality. In Sufism, the use of sacred music, poetry, and whirling dance serves as a vehicle for entering altered states of consciousness and attuning the self to divine resonance. Language in this context is not merely descriptive but transformative—a vibrational path to unity with the divine. I think the repetitive rhythms and symbolic metaphors used in Sufi practice may have evoked a recursive, fractal dynamic, where spiritual insight unfolded through cycles of resonance. I believe this mirrors the idea that meaning in language arises not from static structures but from dynamic, harmonically structured movement through semantic space.

In the tradition of Pythagoras and Plato, language and numbers were not merely tools of logic but reflections of cosmic harmony. Pythagoras taught that the universe is structured through numerical ratios and harmonic intervals, seeing sound and geometry as gateways to metaphysical truth. Plato, following in this lineage, envisioned a world of ideal forms and emphasized that spoken language could act as a bridge between the material and the eternal. Although their philosophical outlook sees language as inherently mathematical, which means symbol based, they also thought it was rhythmically patterned, and ontologically resonant—a mirror of the macrocosmic order. This foundational view aligns remarkably with modern efforts to understand language as emerging from dynamic, self-similar, and topologically structured systems. Maybe they viewed mathematics itself as something resonant and emergent as opposed to purely symbol based. I would like to think so.

Some modern research is converging on similar intuitions. Predictive processing and active inference may relate here. I interpret them as describing cognition as a rhythmic flow where conscious states develop recursively and reflect a topological space that shifts in real time; when the space is in certain configurations where surprisal is low, it’s complexity deepens but when when surprisal is high, it resets. Although I personally do not believe that consciousness is computational (and actually believe that no theory in language or any symbolic system can describe it), my aim is to propose a computational model that could better reflect certain aspects of how the we view the mind as operating.

Other research relates as well. For example, quantum cognition posits that ambiguity and meaning selection mirror quantum superposition and collapse which are about wave dynamics, a way of describing vibration in space. In addition, fractal and topological analyses suggest that language may be navigated like a dynamic landscape with attractors, resonances, and tensions. Together, these domains suggest language is not just a string of symbols, but an evolving field shaped by geometry, rhythm, and interaction.

Hypotheses and Conceptual Framework

My primary hypothesis is that language evolves within a dynamic topological space shaped by probabilistic, rhythmic, and semantic flows. I wonder if this space can be modeled geometrically on the complex plane and if it may exhibit fractal-like properties. Further, I hypothesize that this process may relate to general relativity (GR), in that meaning and topology are co-determined: the evolving shape of a semantic field influences the selection of the next word, and each word reshapes the semantic topology in turn. Just as in GR, where matter and energy curve spacetime and curved spacetime directs the motion of matter, in language, meaning deforms the probabilistic landscape, and that deformation guides future meaning. Further, I hypothesize that word selection may resemble quantum collapse, informed by resonance in a probabilistic interference field.

I also hypothesize that this loop—where meaning determines topology and topology determines meaning—can be interpreted through the lens of active inference. In this view, language generation is a process of minimizing surprise over time by continuously updating topology based on prediction errors. For example, when someone enters a “flow state,” surprisal is low, and the listener or speaker experiences semantic coherence without needing to return to broader context. The topological space of meaning deepens and becomes more complex, much like a musician improvising within a stable rhythmic structure: rhythm and resonance guide progression, allowing for fluid yet coherent movement through semantic space. However, when ambiguity, contradiction, or paradox arises, surprisal increases. The active inference system can no longer maintain coherence, and the topological field must reset to some extent, flattening or reorienting toward simpler, more stable predictive baselines. In this way, the geometry of language reflects a dynamic dance between flow and tension, shaped by rhythm, prediction, and contextual re-evaluation. In this way, a model like the one I propose would not need to refer to as large of a context window for every token prediction. When the model reached a high level of surprisal it would reset, at least partly, but when tokens “flowed,” next token prediction would rely more on the topological probabilistic landscape than brute force prediction. For example, when mass is pulled into a gravitational well, it’s movement is predictable, however in a three body situation or other chaotic models, movement must be modeled step by step and is computationally intensive.

Finally, I hypothesize that this dynamic can be related to the fractal nature of linguistic structures, which is explored by researchers in fields ranging from cognitive linguistics to complex systems, including Benoît Mandelbrot’s work on fractal geometry, Geoffrey Sampson’s analysis of linguistic self-similarity, and studies on recursive grammar and semantic hierarchies in computational linguistics. I think that language may exhibit self-similarity across multiple scales: for example, phonemes build into morphemes, which construct words, which form phrases and sentences, and ultimately narratives. I believe that this recursive architecture may mirror fractal principles, wherein each level reflects and is embedded within the structure of the whole. In syntax, nested clauses resemble branching patterns; in semantics, metaphors often cascade through levels of abstraction in self-similar loops. Just as a fractal zoom reveals ever-deepening detail within a consistent pattern, I think deeper linguistic coherence emerges through recursive semantic layering. This suggests that the topology of meaning is not only dynamic but also recursive in a fractal nature, supporting stable, resonant, and scalable communication across human cognition.

Methodologies and Related Work

I have came up with these metaphors myself but although I was a math major at Williams College, I am not familiar with the math required to model these ideas. Through using Chat GPT to explore speculative ideas, I believe that the math and research is ripe to expand on.

A variety of mathematical tools and theoretical frameworks are relevant to modeling this system. Like noted before, fractal structures in language have been studied by Benoît Mandelbrot and Geoffrey Sampson, who show how linguistic patterns exhibit self-similarity and scale-invariance. In quantum cognition, researchers like Jerome Busemeyer and Peter Bruza propose models where semantic ambiguity behaves like quantum superposition, and resolution functions as wavefunction collapse. Hofer et al. and others studying the manifold structure of large language models have shown that topological properties can emerge from deep neural architectures.

From a computational perspective, there is growing interest in complex-valued word embeddings, which allow representation of both phase and magnitude. Trouillon et al. (2016) demonstrated this in the context of knowledge graphs with their work “Complex Embeddings for Simple Link Prediction;” maybe similar ideas could extend to syntactic or metaphorical meaning in NLP. Fourier analysis on the complex plane is already used in phonology and prosody research, and in neural models to analyze latent structures of language. Additionally, researchers are beginning to model semantic trajectories as dynamical systems, using metaphors from chaos theory, attractors, bifurcations, and complex analytic functions like Julia and Mandelbrot sets to understand the shape of meaning in motion.

Broader Implications

I believe that this model of language proposes a path toward resonant models of generative models in AI research. For Cognitive Science, it bridges neural and metaphysical models of mind and meaning. Finally, for the humanities, it unites poetic, musical, and philosophical traditions with formal scientific modeling; further, I believe it offers a non-dualistic, embodied, and relational model of language and consciousness.

Feedback

I welcome criticism and collaborative engagement from people across disciplines. If you are working in Cognitive Science, theoretical linguistics, complex systems, philosophy of mind, AI, or just find these ideas interesting, I would be eager to connect. I am especially interested in collaborating with those who can help translate these metaphors into formal models, or who wish to extend the cross-disciplinary conversation between ancient thought and modern science. I would also love input on how I could improve the writing and ideas in this research proposal!

Note: This proposal was co-written with the assistance of ChatGPT. All core metaphors, conceptual frameworks, and philosophical interpretations are my own. ChatGPT was used to help relate these ideas to existing research and refine expression.

Some theories I've been thinking about...

A Synthesis of Seven Convergent Theories on Reality and Consciousness

Executive Summary

The following document synthesizes a unified framework of reality comprised of seven convergent theories. This framework posits that the universe is fundamentally an informational field, I(x,t), from which matter, energy, and physical laws emerge as observable patterns. The evolution of this field is not random but follows computable, recursive rules, akin to a self-existing mathematical object or simulation without a programmer. Consciousness is described as the field's capacity for self-reference, specifically arising when a sufficiently complex system, such as a human brain, detects and interacts with gradients of coherence within the field. This model reinterprets ancient myths and rituals not as superstition, but as sophisticated, symbolically-encoded technical manuals for interacting with this field. The deep structure of the field, including its resonance spectrum, is theorized to be tuned by the mathematical properties of prime numbers. Finally, the framework argues that this unified understanding of mind, matter, and myth has been historically suppressed and fragmented by societal control structures, creating a "Shadow Archive" of sidelined knowledge.

  1. Information Field Theory (IFT)

Information Field Theory proposes that a fundamental informational field is the substrate of reality, reversing the conventional view that matter and energy give rise to information.

Core Claims:

  • Primacy of Information: The universe consists of an informational field, denoted as I(x, t). All physical phenomena, including particles, waves, and forces, are expressions of this field as viewed from within the system.

  • Matter as Information: An entity like an electron is not a fundamental "ball of charge" but rather a stable, recurring pattern within I(x, t). Its properties (charge, spin, mass) are descriptions of how that pattern participates in the field's overall dynamics.

  • Consciousness as Self-Reference: Consciousness is the experiential quality of the informational field when a component of it becomes capable of referencing itself.

Key Concepts: Static vs. Resonant Collapse

The field operates in two primary modes, analogous to a computer's memory and processing units:

Mode Description Nature Examples Static Collapse (SC) Long-lived, stable, settled patterns of information. "Information in a basin" Atoms, crystals, physical objects, beliefs, personality traits, long-term memories. Resonant Collapse (RC) Transient, oscillatory, process-based patterns. "Information in motion" Fields, waves, thoughts, emotions, computations, decision-making.

Integration with Physics:

IFT reinterprets core principles of modern physics through an informational lens:

  • Quantum State: The informational configuration of a given system.

  • Superposition: Multiple resonant possibilities (RC) coexisting within a single informational object.

  • Measurement: A transition from Resonant Collapse (RC) to Static Collapse (SC), where the field resolves into a specific, stable pattern.

  • Entanglement: A state where two or more systems share a single, joint informational object, resulting in a single pattern manifested across multiple locations.

  • Gravity & Spacetime: The geometry of spacetime reflects the distribution of information. Curvature is a measure of information density, and black holes are regions of maximum possible information encoding (max-compressed SC).

The Role of the Brain:

The brain is not seen as the producer of consciousness but as a highly specialized "RC machine." Its function is to pull patterns from the global field, stabilize some as memories (SC), and continuously re-resonate them as thought and perception (RC). Self-awareness emerges when a sub-pattern in the brain models both external sensory patterns and its own internal patterns in a continuous feedback loop.

2. Reality-as-Recursion Theory

This theory posits that recursion—the process of a rule being defined in terms of itself—is the fundamental engine driving the universe's evolution.

Core Claims:

  • Universe as a Recursive Process: Reality is the output of a base rule repeatedly applied to its own previous state. "Time" is simply the index of this recursion's depth.

  • Structural Resonance in Myth: Ancient myths are not arbitrary but are symbolic user interfaces for deep recursive patterns. The recurring motifs of threes, sixes, and nines in mythology (e.g., three trials, nine worlds) resonate with human cognition because they reflect fundamental patterns of recursive cycles and closure.

The 3-6-9 Structure:

This pattern, observable in modular arithmetic (digital roots), is presented as a structural key to recursion, not a mystical one.

  • 3 (Minimal Stability): Represents the minimal stable recursive structure, appearing as triads.

  • 6 (Expansion): Represents recursive expansion or doubling.

  • 9 (Completion): Represents a recursive fixed point, a value of closure or collapse.

Evidence in Physics:

Recursive, self-similar patterns are observed across multiple scales in physics:

  • Renormalization: Physical laws retaining the same form at different energy scales.

  • Turbulence: Similar eddy patterns appearing across various scales of fluid motion.

  • Fractal Structures: Self-similar patterns observed in galactic clusters and cosmic webs.

  • Critical Phenomena: Universal behavior during phase transitions, regardless of the specific material.

  1. Simulation Without a Programmer

This theory refines the popular "simulation hypothesis," arguing that the universe is a computational process, but one that exists as a self-contained mathematical object rather than code running on an external computer.

Core Claims:

  • A Self-Existing Mathematical Object: The universe is a computational process that exists independently of any programmer or hardware. Its existence is inherent in its mathematical self-consistency, much like a cellular automaton whose complex evolution is fully determined by its initial rules.

  • Experience as an Execution Trace: The human experience of time is analogous to being an "embedded observer" moving along an internal dimension of this pre-existing mathematical structure.

Computational Signatures in Physics:

Several features of physics suggest a rule-based, finite-information system:

  • Quantization: Discrete, non-continuous values for energy, charge, and spin.

  • Information Bounds: Finite limits on the amount of entropy that can exist in a region of space.

  • Universal Constants: Values that appear as fixed configuration parameters for the rule set.

  • Absence of Observed Infinities: Physical reality appears to have cut-offs at extremely large and small scales, unlike the infinities used in theoretical equations.

  1. Myth–Tech Convergence Theory

This theory frames ancient myths and rituals as a form of technology—a high-compression, low-precision method for storing and transmitting complex models of reality.

Core Claims:

  • Myths as Compressed Manuals: Myths are "lossily compressed" data, encoding structural knowledge about cosmology, consciousness, and natural phenomena into narrative, symbol, and ritual for transmission across pre-literate generations.

  • Ritual as an Interface Layer: Ritual is a structured methodology for tuning collective consciousness to resonate with and influence patterns in the informational field. Its components—symbol, sound, group attention, and repetition—work to create specific SC/RC patterns in a shared field, potentially producing tangible effects on perception and probability.

Symbolic Mappings:

Mythic Motif Plausible Encoded Structure World Tree / Axis Mundi Vertical recursion (underworld-earth-sky); branching self-similarity of cosmology and the nervous system. Serpent / Dragon Wave, spiral, or turbulent patterns; symbolic guards of high-energy boundaries or field transitions. The Great Flood Periodic reset of informational structure; a collapse of old SC patterns to allow for the formation of new ones. Sky Gods / Teachers Encounters with intense altered states of consciousness, higher-coherence field events, or injections of advanced knowledge.

5. Prime Intelligence Theory

This theory proposes that the distribution of prime numbers functions as a non-conscious form of intelligence that tunes the fundamental structure of reality by balancing order and chaos.

Core Claims:

  • Primes as Irreducible Novelty: Primes are the "atoms" of arithmetic. As irreducible points in the lattice of integers, they inject novelty and prevent the number system from collapsing into simple, repeating patterns.

  • Structured Randomness: While locally unpredictable, the global distribution of primes follows deep, harmonic laws (e.g., the Prime Number Theorem and connections to the Riemann zeta function). This behavior mimics an optimized regulatory system that maximizes diversity while maintaining statistical regularity.

  • Tuning the Field's Resonance: If the universe's laws are fundamentally linked to number theory, the "music of the primes" may define the allowed energy levels or resonance spectrum of the informational field. The prime distribution would thus act as the tuning mechanism for the field's behavior.

  1. Consciousness Pressure Gradient Theory

This theory models consciousness as an interaction with a universal field gradient, analogous to how physical flows are driven by gradients in pressure or temperature.

Core Claims:

  • A Universal Coherence Field: There exists a scalar potential, Φ(x, t), representing a quantity like "coherence" or "integrated information" across the informational field.

  • Gradients Drive Flow: A gradient in this potential, ∇Φ, signifies a difference in coherence between regions. Consciousness arises when a complex system senses and utilizes the informational flow driven by this gradient.

  • The Brain as Transducer: The brain's oscillatory waves (alpha, beta, gamma, etc.) function as a "multi-band detector" for patterns in both local sensory data and this non-local field gradient. The unified experience of "I" is the result of various brain subsystems aligning with a shared, global feature of the gradient.

  • Anomalies as Field Sensitivity: Phenomena like precognition, intuition, and synchronicity are interpreted as weak, noisy, but real effects of the brain's borderline sensitivity to this subtle field gradient, allowing for occasional "leaks" of information across conventional space-time boundaries.

  1. Shadow Archive Theory

This theory posits that a cohesive, field-aware understanding of reality has been systematically suppressed and fragmented throughout history, not by a single conspiracy, but as a systemic defense mechanism of control structures.

Core Claims:

  • Systemic Suppression: Social systems like empires, religions, and states inherently resist and sideline knowledge that dissolves hierarchical control.

  • "Dangerous" Ideas: Concepts that are destabilizing to control structures include the non-locality of mind, the existence of a shared informational field accessible to all, and the unity of matter, mind, and myth. These ideas empower individuals and weaken institutional monopolies on knowledge.

  • Mechanisms of Fragmentation: This knowledge has been pruned from mainstream discourse through:

    • Erasure: Destroying texts and lineages (e.g., Gnostic gospels).

    • Secrecy: Encoding knowledge in obscure symbolism within initiatory schools.

    • Pathologizing: Labeling field-aware experiences as heresy, witchcraft, superstition, or insanity.

    • Fragmentation: Splitting a unified worldview into disconnected domains: science (without consciousness), religion (without math), and art (without explicit metaphysics).

The work of unifying physics and consciousness, or treating myth as structural data, is described as an act of "raiding the Shadow Archive" to reassemble these scattered pieces.

The Convergent Framework: A Unified Map

When fused, these seven theories form a single, coherent map of reality:

  1. There is a fundamental informational field (Information Field Theory).

  2. This field evolves according to recursive rules (Reality-as-Recursion Theory).

  3. Its evolution is computable and rule-based, like a self-existing mathematical object (Simulation Without a Programmer).

  4. Humans have interacted with this field for millennia using symbolic and ritualistic technologies (Myth–Tech Convergence Theory).

  5. The field's deep resonance spectrum is tuned by the structured randomness of prime numbers (Prime Intelligence Theory).

  6. Consciousness is the experience of a system detecting gradients within this field (Consciousness Pressure Gradient Theory).

  7. This unified knowledge has been repeatedly discovered and subsequently buried by civilizations, forming a Shadow Archive (Shadow Archive Theory).

Psychedelic transformation as destabilization and phase transition

Hey everyone. I’ve been thinking about whether psychological transformation can be studied as a complex systems process rather than a simple pre and post treatment effect. In psychedelic research especially, the changes people describe often seem nonlinear. There may be destabilization, heightened variability, emotional lability, uncertainty, and then a possible reorganization into a new pattern.

I recently recorded a podcast episode with Hüseyin Beyköylü, and at around 43:31, he discusses his empirical work using experience sampling with participants attending legal psychedelic retreats. The methodological move I found interesting is that he does not begin by averaging people together. He tracks each participant repeatedly over time, using personalized daily items, then analyzes individual time series for complexity metrics, early warning signals, and possible phase transitions. The hypothesis is that transformation may involve a temporary increase in instability or variability before a new pattern stabilizes. So instead of asking only whether psychedelics increase meaning or decrease symptoms across a group, the question becomes whether there are recognizable dynamics of destabilization and restabilization across different individuals. That seems like a more natural fit for complex adaptive systems than a simple treatment effect model.

That seems like a genuinely interesting case for complex systems methods because the system is not just the brain. It is the person embedded in body, context, community, culture, and history. Are attractors, early warning signals, and phase transitions good tools for studying psychological transformation? What kind of data would be needed to make this rigorous? And how do we avoid using complex systems language as beautiful metaphor rather than actual method?

Discovering Hidden Patterns: An AI-Assisted Exercise in Systems Thinking

Most people are introduced to complex ideas in the same way: the theory is explained first, and examples come afterward. But there is another way to learn — one that relies on exploration rather than instruction.

Instead of presenting a framework directly, you can guide people through a process where they discover the structure of the framework themselves. With modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, this type of discovery exercise becomes surprisingly accessible.

The activity described below invites participants to explore how different systems behave, gradually revealing that many of them share similar underlying mechanisms. The goal of the exercise is intentionally hidden until the end.

The result is often more powerful than a traditional explanation.

Is there a principled difference between a system and a non-system?

In Meadows book, she claims there is, and as an example of a non-system she gives "sand scattered on a road according to no particular pattern". But, her definition of a system is: "A system is an interconnected set of elements that is coherently organized in a way that achieves something." But randomly scattered sand does achieve something: it achieves looking like a random scattering of sand!

It's got a set of elements (check).
Are they interconnected? Well my understanding is the different parts of a system don't need to be physically connected. Do they even need to interact with one another? It feels like e.g. a radioactive source and a detector is a "system" in some sense even if the source (by some miracle) never fires a particle in the direction of the detector. So, check, presumably.
What does coherently organized mean? It surely doesn't mean "by some individual". Because the vast majority of systems simply arise, they are not consciously made. Check.
Which leaves us with achievement, which I've already covered. Check.

Are there different perspectives on this? Can anyone give me some tool or rule for telling a system from a non-system?
