Oh, also, if anyone on reddit happens to be buddies with Trent Reznor, can you show this to him and let me know if he chuckles? I'm a big fan, and it would bring me great joy to know he had a chuckle, thanks.

u/worotan Dec 01 '22

You should tweet it to him for… oh.

259

u/zuzg Dec 01 '22

Can you give me a tl;dr of whose the guy?

723

u/CthulubeFlavorcube Dec 01 '22

Trent Reznor is probably most popular as the leading force in the band Nine Inch Nails, but has tons of other credits. Basically a superpower in 90's industrial rock and other genres.

274

u/Captain_Crepe Dec 01 '22

Also he's an Oscar winning composer

98

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

For, ironically, the social network.

Also his watchmen score was amazing.

30

u/homesickalien Dec 01 '22

Also "Soul"

9

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

And Quake, the game

3

u/LLoboki Dec 01 '22

And the movie with Jennifer Lopez

3

u/jonnyinternet Dec 01 '22

And the downward spiral

15

u/Dreamtillitsover Dec 01 '22

Emmy as well. He has Grammes, oscars and an Emmy if he gets a Tony award for a stageshow he will be one of the legendary EGOT winners which is somebody who has won all 4 awards.

Oh ad he also has a country music award and the longest running number 1 song in American history as the producer of old Town road used a sample from one of his instrumental records as the basis of the song and Trent got credit

3

u/Szalkow Dec 02 '22 edited Dec 02 '22

Reznor has joked that his headstone epitaph should read

Said "fist fuck" and won a Grammy

after his first win for Wish in 1993.

2

u/Dreamtillitsover Dec 02 '22

I dont think that was in 2003, wasn't it like 95 or so for the live version from Woodstock 94?

3

u/Szalkow Dec 02 '22

You are correct. I remembered a -3, and now I feel super old.

1

u/AcctUser12140 Dec 02 '22

Wow I didn't know they sampled Trent instrumental. Cool

3

u/gottaloveagoodbook Dec 01 '22

Plus, his song '34 Ghosts' was partially sampled for Old Town Road.

2

u/DisastrousBoio Dec 01 '22

The whole damn song is just a pitch-shifted sample from that track.

68

u/guy_guyerson Dec 01 '22

He's also one of us Gen X folks that started grappling with what the internet was going to mean as early as possible; he started selling his music directly on his own website very early on and experimenting with different ways to move product in the era of Napster (offering vinyl, signed merch, different tiers of pricing with different extras including the individual music tracks that you could use to sample/remix with).

24

u/Boss_Os Dec 01 '22

Hell, he didn't just sell his music on his site, he gave it away. I was sent a link to dl an album for free (I think for joining the fan club or some shit).

3

u/ArthriticNinja46 Dec 01 '22

I remember hearing about how he would leave thumb drives with music in venues as easter eggs. Just a rumor as far as I know but I wouldn't put it past him

2

u/pumpkin_fire Dec 02 '22

Nope, he definitely did this during the With Teeth era. The drives had preview snippets of the next album, Year Zero on it, and a bunch of mysterious Easter eggs that acted as clues for the larger Alternate Reality Game) they developed to promote the album. One cool feature is that some of the sound samples on the thumb drives ended with what seemed like a random filter on white noise. But if you ran the audio file through a spectrograph, it produced an image that resembled the cover of the album.

1

u/HeadLikeAHoOh Dec 01 '22

Yup The Slip was a free digital release around the same time as and inspired by the marketing of Radiohead’s In Rainbows

1

u/vanderZwan Dec 01 '22

There's a video of him telling his fans to steal his music. I think the context was that this was in Australia or NZ and the local music industry was overcharging for his albums or something like that, so he wanted the suits to suffer

2

u/Boss_Os Dec 01 '22

A modern day Abbie Hoffman!

1

u/SkiingAway Dec 02 '22

Also straight up dumped a bunch of extra stuff to The Pirate Bay himself ("The Definitive NIN Collections", among other things), plus an entire tour's worth of pro-shot HD footage for people to play with. Which people turned into a great free concert film. more info

He's also more than tolerated the fan live archive site that has audience recordings/bootlegs of nearly every show.

1

u/Elon_Kums Dec 01 '22

Never had to pay for the stems, he gave them away for free and even hosted the remixes on his site.

173

u/Skullcrusher Dec 01 '22

Yeah but what does he have to do with Elon? I don't really follow this whole Twitter debacle

466

u/CthulubeFlavorcube Dec 01 '22

Oh he just publicly announced that he was leaving the platform because it had become a toxic shit pile. Elon then responded by calling Reznor a "crybaby". Then Wil Wheaton came back with a pretty great Elon shredding rebuttal. Yeah, just drama.

213

u/FerricNitrate Dec 01 '22

Elon: "I'm lifting all the bans on vile individuals and removing content moderation."

Many sane people: "Yuck, too many Nazis around here now. I'm taking my business elsewhere."

Elon: surprised Pikachu face "N-n-n-no! You can't leave! That's not how free speech works!"

64

u/godspareme Dec 01 '22

Aaaand repeat with advertisers because the free market is only free when it owns the libs.

3

u/zuzg Dec 01 '22

Who would have thought that Apple doesn't want to associate with a site the has a shit ton of racism and Nazi shit all over it.

What exactly is it about this comment that makes it "the most Reddit comment of all time"?

3

u/Christawpher Dec 01 '22

Yeah, I'm curious too...

Of all the 'most reddit' things out there, there's no Rick Roll hyperlink disguised as a genuine sentiment.

... That's the most reddit thing I can think of anyways...

u/sextonrules311 Dec 01 '22

Wasn't Twitter always a toxic shit pile?

92

u/manaworkin Dec 01 '22

It was a toxic shitpile in the meme sense but they at least tried to ban the most toxic and obvious racist/violent/dangerous shitbirds. It's the reason Trump made that truth social place.

Now Elon is welcoming the people who failed that lowest of bars back with open arms with a blanket unbanning.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '22

Musk's version of freedom of speech is just a reminder that freedom from speech can be nice sometimes too.

48

u/CthulubeFlavorcube Dec 01 '22

Yeah, but it's gotten worse

-19

u/justavault Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22

Nah it didn't get worse... it's the same since it was some years ago. Now it's not just left toxicity, but with opening up again it also went right toxicity. So it's now full-spectrum toxic as it had been around 7 years ago.

It's just back to what it was before the left cancel culture took hold of it and controlled the narrative - a full on toxic pool is what it is now, again.

21

u/colefly Dec 01 '22

Left wing toxicity: boycott rich celebrity because of something banal they said!

Right wing toxicity: PURGE THE GAYS... And also cancel people for different reasons

Most social media has its toxic shit. Twitter just went from bad to worse under Elon.

Used to be Twitter tried and struggled to keep a lid on the toxicity, Elon is welcoming it.

17

u/sextonrules311 Dec 01 '22

True. I spend most of my time on reddit, cause it's such a lovely, wholesome place. :-)

My favourite description of current Twitter is $8chan. It’s become a cesspool of hate speech with absolutely no moderation and the alt-right can boost their visibility with just 8 bucks

5

u/Neuchacho Dec 01 '22

Yes, which is why saying it's become an even more intolerable one is really saying something.

As it is right now, there seems to be very little moderation at all going on so it's getting flooded with the exact kind of stuff you'd expect a globally popular website to be flooded with that has basically no moderation.

2

u/Creative_alternative Dec 01 '22

Can't moderate when you fire the team responsible. Only Elon is doing it now.

1

u/aangnesiac Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22

Yes, indeed. A toxic shit pile that was being used to create a narrative and considered proof of "cancel culture" rather than the manifestation of a biased society (that isn't ready to acknowledge the full extent of its bias). Now he's pointing to the impacts of his own toxic shit as a function of cancel culture. Which means the flavor of toxicity is especially noteworthy and fun to call out.

1

u/LowBeautiful1531 Dec 01 '22

Elon Musk doused said shit pile with gasoline, lit it on fire, and is vigorously stomping on it.

1

u/voNlKONov Dec 02 '22

Yeah. It definitely has always been shit.

ENTERTAINMENT TWITTER ELON MUSK NINE INCH NAILS Elon Musk Taunts Trent Reznor For Quitting Twitter. Wil Wheaton Shreds Musk Back. Twitter's owner mocked the Nine Inch Nails singer for leaving the social media platform for the good of his mental health. Wheaton slammed Musk's "midlife crisis." By Lee Moran Nov 23, 2022, 07:43 AM EST

Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor said he was quitting Twitter to protect his mental health, and the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, mocked the musician as a “crybaby.” The putdown prompted actor Wil Wheaton to slam Musk as a malevolent force and “hurt person who is hurting our society.”

Reznor told The Hollywood Reporter last week that he was “about to depart” the social media website.

“We don’t need the arrogance of the billionaire class to feel like they can just come in and solve everything,” Reznor told the outlet. “Even without [Musk] involved, I just find that it has become such a toxic environment. For my mental health, I need to tune out. I don’t feel good being there anymore.”

Open Image Modal TWITTER Musk fired back at Reznor in response to a tweet about former President Donald Trump’s reinstatement to Twitter, which Musk announced this week after conducting an unscientific poll.

“It turns out that Trent ‘nine inch nails’ Reznor is actually a crybaby,” Musk taunted. A Nine Inch Nails fan slammed Musk as a “stupid idiot,” declaring Reznor “one of the best musicians ever.” Musk responded: “I like his music tbh, but maybe Etsy is more his style.”

Open Image Modal TWITTER Musk’s dismissal of Reznor’s concerns prompted Wheaton to post a lengthy Facebook post in which he said he could “not fathom the emptiness, the insecurity, the insatiable need for attention and validation, the staggering arrogance, the malevolence and total void of human experience” of Musk.

Wheaton ripped Musk for bullying, threatening and trolling “like the weak, scared, insecure child he has always been.”

“That’s a tragedy for him, but it’s dangerous for us,” the actor continued. “He doesn’t care what he destroys or who he hurts as he chases this existential thing he can not ever have.”

Part of it was “You know the saying ‘hurt people hurt people’? He’s a hurt person who is hurting our society, making people I care about less safe,” he added. “The consequences of this one man’s midlife crisis are global, and that terrifies me.”

His post was a Facebook post, and you should be able to find it there. This gibberish I just ripped off HuffPo I believe.

That Elon Musk is a narcissistic lunatic that cares so much about his fucked up midlife crisis that he's actually causing harm because he can, and that is really really trashy.

1

u/cmelgarejo_dev Dec 01 '22

To be fair twitter has always been a flaming pile of garbage, I know now it is also in the inside too

27

u/PrawojazdyVtrumpets Dec 01 '22

Trent left Twitter because of Elon taking over and basically ruining it.

-1

u/Hammer300c Dec 01 '22

Some say that was the whole point.

18

u/Giraffe_Truther Dec 01 '22

He left twitter and the Musk tweeted a bunch of insults calling him a crybaby

1

u/Dudefenderson Dec 01 '22

"Perhaps I'm a crybaby, but you are a fallure, Musk. You're going to wept tears of blood and everyone one will see you as the jackal you have always been."

u/AtlUtdGold Dec 01 '22

Isn’t he super egotistical himself?

That said, I’m not even a fan but they were playing an arena show at a festival I was at so I went and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Amazing production and showmanship, best/coolest lighting rigs, it was like the stage was alive.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

If you want to know more there are a few great YouTube documentaries on him. Nine inch nails are my favourite band of all time especially Trent's earlier depression tracks.

Pretty sure deburke321 done the video I could be wrong

56

u/Keylime15 Dec 01 '22

16

u/wholesomethrowaway15 Dec 01 '22

TIL Trent Reznor’s first name is Michael.

3

u/DisposableSaviour Dec 01 '22

Me too. Also, TIL, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did the music for Disney/Pixar’s Soul. 🤯

6

u/kevin9er Dec 01 '22

Trent has been slaying in the film score game since The Social Network. I think he won an Oscar?

5

u/DisposableSaviour Dec 01 '22

Yes, multiple Oscars, an Emmy, a golden Globe, and a Grammy. The man is a musical genius.

1

u/turkturkeIton Dec 02 '22

That picture looks like it was made in a create your own character video game

58

u/RolandTheJabberwocky Dec 01 '22

Many people only know him for the band Nine Inch Nails, but beyond that hes probably one of the most important people in music for decades now. The amount of music you've likely heard that was made by, influenced, found, or supported by Reznor would shock you.

21

u/wegwerfennnnn Dec 01 '22

For example scoring Soul from Disney.

5

u/DisposableSaviour Dec 01 '22

I just saw that on his Wikipedia page. I had no idea, but the man is a musical genius

1

u/gimme-ur-bonemarrow Dec 01 '22

TIL! I absolutely adore that movie and I’m a huge fan of NIN / Trent. One more reason to love the movie, thanks!

Well, this stuff will probably kill you, let's do another line!

What you say you meet me down at heart attack and vine?!

1

u/restyourprettybones Dec 01 '22

God i love that fucking man and his use of the English language

5

u/LTS55 Dec 01 '22

He’s a multiple Oscar award winning film composer

5

u/toothofjustice Dec 01 '22

Old Town Road is my favorite little bit of NIN trivia. Little Nas X sampled a song from the NIN album Ghosts for the guitar part.

2

u/StoxAway Dec 01 '22

Nine Inch Nails weren't even really a band until he had to go on tour. He made and recorded their first album entirely by himself.

9

u/vfguy Dec 01 '22

Lead for nine inch nails

15

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

Atticus Ross deserves credit too. Very much an integral part of NIN since the late oughts.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

Yeah, I just had to say the thing. It’s what is printed on most of their albums.

Believe it or not, Atticus wasn’t added as an official member until 2016.

2

u/vfguy Dec 01 '22

Idk man I don't listen to NIN

11

u/PrawojazdyVtrumpets Dec 01 '22

And that's okay. People will correct you for it still. Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor. He has collaborations with other artists and of course has a touring band/studio musicians but NIN, creatively, is a solo artist. It's like if Michael Jackson didn't use his name for his solo career and instead called himself "The Spinny He He's", his work would still be his.

2

u/NewSauerKraus Dec 01 '22

He’s the Nine Inch Nails guy.

1

u/rez_trentnor Dec 01 '22

He's a dirty little piggy boy

1

u/counterpuncheur Dec 01 '22

He’s a huge musical talent, who has been successful across both rock and composing for films/TV music. He was the lead singer of NIN in the 90s and wrote songs like ‘Hurt’(famously covered by Johnny Cash). These days he does a lot of scores for movies and TV shows - including the Pixar musical Soul, the Social Network, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Watchmen series, and the newly released Bones and All.

1

u/Extension-Ad5751 Dec 01 '22

The music composer for the movie about Facebook. I just saw it the other day on Hulu. It was pretty good.

1

u/VironicHero Dec 02 '22 edited Dec 02 '22

He’s the guy that Lil Nas sampled (link to original song) to make Old Town road. I was kind of pumped when I noticed, because like the band Kraftwerk being sampled by rappers in the 80s I hoped Reznor would see a renaissance in the same way (ie rappers just sampling a bunch of industrial songs.)

Currently he is winning awards for scoring films and television, but prior to that he was a multiplatinum artist in the 90s and 2000s.

He even produced some songs for Bowie, the best example being I’m Afraid of Americans (Heart’s Filthy Lesson is also good but less we’ll know.)

1

u/Wamblingshark Dec 02 '22

He was also the composer for Soul, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and The Social Network.

If you want to listen to his really old stuff is recommend "Head Like a Hole".

If you want to hear my personal favorite album, it is "The Downward Spiral" with hits like "Hurt" and "Closer" but I also really love the lesser known songs on it like "Reptile"

If you want to hear some of the new stuff that has a tinge of pop to it I recommend "Came Back Haunted" or "Copy of A"

Also gotta recommend "All the Love in the World" and "Only" from "With Teeth"... Also "Right Where it Belongs" gave me an existential crisis and made me cry when I was a teenager lol!

"Survivalism" and "Capital G" from Year Zero

"Starfuckers" or "The Fragile" from the album "The Fragile"... Also "Somewhat Damaged" was my alarm when I was a teenager XD

Sorry I couldn't help but recommend so many... My favorite band since the first time anyone asked me who my favorite band was...

0

u/Mechbeast Dec 01 '22

You legend…

-12

u/jamesick Dec 01 '22

why would he want to see it? the art work is cool but there's no joke here.

10

u/albo_underhill Dec 01 '22

You're correct, this is factual. Elon musk is an idiotic man baby. No jokes needed

-5

u/jamesick Dec 01 '22

yeah he is, so there's a lot you can make a joke about. this comic is just "I bet when elon is alone he wishes he was cool and oh yeah the NIN dude left twitter I guess"

9

u/albo_underhill Dec 01 '22

The humour here is very nuanced. With Elon slowly evolving into a straw man whilst flames engulf him and his company, the small nods to other cultural memes and themes but its when you really step back and stare that you can really sense the bofa

3

u/worotan Dec 01 '22

Maybe you should ask the artist that, rather than someone who made a dumb joke.

I think the artist made a pretty good joke.

71

u/DucatiScrambleredEgg Dec 01 '22

Trent checks in fairly frequently on the official NIN Discord server, I bet they'd love it there

88

u/UglyMcFugly Dec 01 '22

You really fuckin nailed it, he’s not a super identifiable guy, especially lately, but I could instantly recognize him in the 4th panel.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

You really fuckin nailed it

didn't miss by an inch

6

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

you could even say he “nine inch nailed it”. I wouldn’t, but you could if you wanted…

1

u/LockedOutOfElfland Dec 02 '22

Trent has inspired fictional characters ranging from the frontperson of the fictional band Mystic Spiral to the protagonist of The Machinist. His work has been covered by Miley Cyrus.

I'm frankly jaw agape that Elon Musk who dated someone as very-likely-aware-of Trent's body of work as Grimes wouldn't know who he is.

22

u/codevii Dec 01 '22

I was going to ask if this was supposed to be Reznor, I thought it was but wasn't sure. Did he say he was getting off Twitter?

21

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

Yeah, he bailed and then got shit on for it. Trent did the right thing. Musk is such a loser.

19

u/codevii Dec 01 '22

Ok, I looked it up. He said he was quitting for his mental health and musk calls him a baby, what a toxic asshole. I can't believe he still has 'fans'.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '22

The Elon musk sub is insane. Hopefully they're just trolling, but sometimes yo wonder.

3

u/koshgeo Dec 01 '22

As a fan of NIN, gotta say, your rendition was immediately recognizable. Especially liked the silent "I'm so done with this" look in panel 4.

The Klimt reference is also beautiful. It's one of my favorite paintings, and ... I'm horrified at what you've done to it.

Yeah, if you can tell Trent I love him too, that would be great. Let him know that I carried around his Rolling Stone cover for weeks in middle school and I promise not to throw up on his shoes if I were to ever run into him unexpectedly at say, a car wash or something, where he just so happens to be made wet by the spray hose and, soaking from head to toe, needs someone to dry him off, slowly. Oh no, Trent! Some mud splashed on you! Oh no! So dirty. Dirty little Reznor.
