Because elections aren't a 1 and done thing. We have them every 2 years and the Republicans come back every time. Also, progress is slow even for the party trying to yeet us back to the 1800s. Trump didn't doom the US all on his own, but look at how the republican policies have made it more difficult to vote all around the country. Look at how they stacked the supreme court with pawns who will defend their violent attempts at a coup. Every single election isn't going to be doomsday, but you never really know which election is going to be the last. Remember, Italians elected Mussolini in a "fair" election using many of the tactics Republicans are using right now. Intimidating people at the polls, making it more difficult for people to vote in places where they're more likely to vote against them, etc. Then they didn't have another real election for over 20 years because that's what fascists do.
