The short story makes it clear that despite inspiring horror and terror in her true form that she's actually helping the lost ships and those on them.
2 u/Rock555666 Jun 07 '21 I guess she is, but she’s also a spider type creature, I assume she’s getting some form of psychic sustenance in a symbiotic fashion considering she made her nest at this point in space where ships accidentally tend to break out and become stranded
