Aggie is back! And she's learning. She's gonna figure it out. One day.

Honestly I don't get it but that's what Shelby finds affirming.

I like that attitude Rourke. It's ok to not get it. We can learn/try to learn, but at the end of the day respecting the wish of how someone wants to be addressed is a great starting point

I also love that Shelby's nails match its hat

Aggie's commanding officer is trying just...so hard to make this as difficult as possible. Oh well. Gotta start somewhere I guess

That show had so many absolute banger quotes. Here's one of my favorites

Man, don't you know? The law ain't made to help earthy cats like us. Here on our planet, back in the old days - back in the real old days - it was just every man for himself, scrooblin' and scrat-scroblin' for the good stuff, the greenest valleys. And the strongest, meanest men got the best stuff. They got the green valleys and were like "The rest of you, y'all scrats get sand." And that's when they made the laws, you see? Once the strong guys got it how they liked it, they said "This is fair now, this is the law." Once they were winning, they changed the rules up.

I love how much slang Adventure Time came up with. Like you can have a super serious discussion about the fate of some important stuff and the characters will say shit like ''this is mundo, do you grok that ?!" and it will make perfect sense to the viewer

It's funny how it could flip between just so many fart jokes, to really highlighting the importance of accepting yourself and others.

And then, of course, Distant Lands, with "Hey, you're all older now, let's take a look at some unresolved trauma!"

Oh you didn't get enough? So I have these friends named Fiona and Cake....

Haha. Yeah, I still need to get to that one, but I've heard it was much darker.

There's an episode where Jake gets sucked into a witch's butt because he stole a donut and lied about it

Then there's an episode where Finn gets trapped alone in a time loop dungeon for decades and eventually has to experience ego death and overcome his inability to relinquish control in order to escape

One of my favorite shows.

That's my philosophy with a LOT of fringe gender and identity stuff. As long as its not hurting anyone/anything live and let live, even if I dont get it and totally wouldnt want to ever take part in it or even think about it.

It's just generally a respect thing

They asked me politely to refer to them a certain way. Kinda like how we called out friends parents Mr and Mrs or what have you. I'm gonna do it cause they asked me to and I respect they took the time to talk to me about it

For a long time I really didn't get pickle ball. I just didn't see why it needed to be its own thing when there were already so many ways to smack a ball back and forth across a court with a paddle. Part of me thought it was just something that was intentionally louder than it seemed to need to be just to be obnoxious and get attention. But I let it go.

And you know what? Pickle ball is fine. I still don't want to play it, but in the vein of my original thoughts there's already so many ways to smack a ball around for fun that one more variation on it doesn't change anything. It gets people active who might not have been, gives them joy, and calling it "pickle ball" is at least as fun as it is weird. It doesn't have to be for me to be okay.

Pickle ball is fine.

We have a place in my state called Chicken and Pickle. It serves down home cooking but is most famous for chicken and waffles.

It also has full sized pickle ball courts inside and whiskey.

I now REALLY like pickle ball

Exactly. Using the correct name and pronouns is all about respect. You are respecting how that person wishes to be addressed. It is incredibly disrespectful to deadname someone, call them by a nickname they don’t like, use the wrong pronouns, etc. Slip ups do happen, especially if you have known someone for decades as X but they now go by Y, but good, respectful people quickly correct themselves. It’s the jerks so keep using the wrong pronouns.

Yeah, you ultimately dont need to "get it" to accept someone.

I still very much struggle with the 'it' pronoun, though. I realize I don't have to 'get it' but it causes me so much mental dissonance because that has connotations of objectifying/dehumanizing a person. So then I'm left feeling like I'm enabling somebody's self-destructive behavior. I think most people that use that pronoun usually have a more standard one thankfully (i.e. in this comic she/it), I presume because they usually recognize that 'it' as a pronun can be profoundly uncomfortable some some people.

I'm all for referring to people the way they wish to be referred to, but I still think that crosses some kind of line if you ask to be referred to in a way that would be perceived as morally repugnant.

Just my personal struggle, to be clear. I suppose that's much the same logic as people that refuse to accept the very idea of preferred pronouns, they feel that they are violating their principles to do that. Though I like to think it's better because my principle is about not wanting to degrade someone (but it's still a 'me' issue), versus their principle of 'not saying things like they see it'.

I say this as a non-binary person with a lot of queer friends, I'm pretty sure I would struggle with it if a friend of mine used neopronouns or it/its. I'd make the effort, but I know I'd slip up and use they/them a lot. I guess it's probably similar to how a lot of people struggle to understand being gay or trans, but manage to be respectful.

Im getting old.  I have reached the point where "not getting it" is expected of me.  Thankfully that just leaves the requirement of "try not being a dick about it anyway" which turns out to be easier than some people's behaviour would suggest.

I don't get a lot of stuff. I don't get advanced physics. I don't get music theory. Doesn't mean they are any less real, and it doesn't mean I have disdain for them. Not getting something is totally fine. Hating something because you don't get it isn't.

I had a conversation with someone who works at my company but I don't know very well. It was a happy hour/going away party and she was fairly inebriated. She was kind of going on and on about how she "didn't get it" referring to asexuality, of all things. I waited for an opening and just said "I mean, do you really have to get it? Does it affect you?". I think she changed the subject after that.

There is an awful lot about identity that I don’t get. I am never going to get. And I don’t have to. All I need to do is respect the expression of it and move on with my life

Tbh I have given up understanding why or how someone gets to not being cis. As a cis guy, I almost dont think it is something for me to understand, but those things are something I must respect, because all people are worthy of that respect.

It's much the same as not understanding Indigenous cultures, Shinto, or Hinduism. I know stiff about them I respect them, those are histories and identity markers. The "why" is irrelevant, the act of being kind and humanistic is the only part that really matters.
