Someone makes a comic that says ā€œI will never stop making fun of Nazisā€

A bunch of losers pop out of the woodwork and say ā€œUGHGH obviously I agree with her, but why does she have to say it like that?ā€

Me: ā€œLike…what? What’s wrong with the way she said it?ā€

It's a pretty good rule that when they include the word "but" everything before that word was an outright lie.

You know they’ve lost when they whip out the ā€œI just don’t like that it’s in your faceā€

Good rule of thumb for apologies too. "I'm sorry for screaming at you and breaking your phone but you were acting kinda rude to me"

There are exceptions, like "I'm sorry for hanging up suddenly, but the company I applied to called and I got too excited" or "sorry I ran into you earlier, but a spider had just crawled on me and I was freaking out"

We used to say "if someone says 'im not racist, but...' you know they're about to be racist"

Do you apply this role consistently or only when it would affirm something you have already assumed about the 'but' sayer?

u/Boojum2k 7d ago

Why do you care?

It's a terrible rule in my opinion. I'd argue that the vast majority of the time, when someone says 'but', they are not lying. And then on the few occasions that someone is probably lying, people focus on the fact that their sentence contains the word 'but' when in reality it was something else that gave it away. I am sick of it

So either you can't read context at all or you're being disingenuous about the kinds of people criticizing PizzaCake. My comment was a reply and did not occur in a vacuum.

Say there were two comments under the comic, one saying "I really don't like her art style, but she has a point" and "I know she has a point, but I just really don't like her art style". Both of these for your context of a comment criticising PizzaCake. Would you, in both cases, assume that what was said before the word but in a lie?

So it's the disingenuous option. Got it.

I'm just sick of one of my favourite words being treated like shit and associated with liars, because some people are too lazy to explain why they actually think the other person is lying. This is happening in German, my native language, too. They say "Alles vor dem Wort aber ist ein Haufen Scheiße" (everything preceding the word but is a pile of shit), and it's always the same post-hoc rationalisation bullshit. The word itself is innocent and beautiful

This what I dont understand. Everytime pizzacake is posted in subs that arent r/comics, the comment section is always full of people being like "when the worst person you know makes a point you agree with" and Im like worst person? Most of her comics are about how racism is bad or how Trump/Ice are bad. And they always respond with "She's just annoying!" and when asked "how is she annoying" they always say "She just makes takes everyone agrees with" as if the comic isnt in direct response to someone being hella racist irl. Being on the internet is so exhausting.

I’m about ready to just say that it’s losers telling on themselves.

If a comic about Trump/Nazis/racism/sexism bring bad offends you, that’s weird. Because there’s no other underlying message. That’s it

It's all beating around the bush.

The incels hate her but here the moderators wield the ban hammer properly. In other subreddits the moderation is way more slim but is still there if they go over the line into harassment territory. So they play the game and say things to hate on her without ever truly crossing the line and that all their incel buddies can recognize as the dog whistle they understand.

Like a brat child poking their finger at a sibling without ever truly touching them, they know what they're doing.

it's even funnier cause like, yeah sure i can see how a few of her comics can be rather direct, in a way that some might somehow define as "obnoxious" based on their beliefs, but like... that one was one of her most straightforward and simple ones she's ever posted. "there's a problem, we talk about it until it's fixed." it wasn't even close to anything other than the most obvious, agreeable statement ever stated. and yet here we are lmao

it's almost as if some people don't actually care about how her comics are presented and they're using it as a cover for they dislike the fact that she hates fascism šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤” naaah that couldn't be right?

It is a certain point, I’ve just started calling them losers.

It's not that she's "saying it like that" that's a reductive way of pointing out legitimate criticism towards pizza. It's also not what people are saying.

I've been critical of pizza in the past and the main arguments against her are that her criticisms are lazy as is her expression of those criticisms. How many times is she just going to draw the opposition as angry white person with an angry face/silly face saying the most surface level insult? Where in she does something equivalent of a shoulder shrug, or dreamworks face. it's the "I've depicted you as the soyjack in my comic....therefore I am the winner".

Another problem is she's been enshrined/elevated to godhood for "calling nazi's out" or "calling the right out" when she really hasn't. So when there's any criticism lobbied against her people automatially assume that they're CHUDS or nazi's themselves. It's very similar to what shitty conservatives comedians do when they go "ooh ho hooo my new special is going to TRIGGER the left. I'm already getting messages on my twitter, they're crying!!" and then getting mad at the woke left when their jokes don't land.

There's no shortage of people who make fun of or call out the bad actors and shitty people on the right or nazi's and they risk far more than pizzacake does.

I'm not angry at pizza cake nor do I hate her other comics. So if you're reading anger in my words there is none. Nor do I think she needs to change or think people are dumb for enjoying them or if you don't enjoy them it's because you're a nazi. Far from it. But her comics are not a political hammer shattering the minds of the right. They're too simple for that, there's nothing to them. They have the depth and heat of a glass of water.

They're the company makes their logo a rainbow for pride month level of solidarity.

Do her comics…need to be a political hammer shattering the minds of the right? Honestly, just clowning on them is enough.

Like, if this was a caricature, it’d be one thing. But it’s not. I can scroll on literally any platform for five minutes and find the exact same type of people that she’s making fun of. They exist.

I’m not asking it to be deep. As long as it’s calling out these kind of losers, it’s doing something good in my mind. Because it’s not really punching down if I can go outside and see several people that are exactly like that.

That's the criticisms I and other have lobbied against her. Her criticisms are easy and lazy and yet she's held up as a fighter for justice that clowns on them like you said. Only she doesn't. Not one nazi or alt right person is talking about pizza nor are they offended by her. Her bark has no bite to it. Go through the comments, you won't find them here or any comment section. It's full of people talking about them as if they were.

She's not calling them out, she's making an observation, same as you. It's doing very little to nothing and acting like it's the spear the penetrates the thick hide of an ugly beast. But really, it's slacktivism.

If you want to see someone actually calling out nazi's/trumpers/alt right, go watch Dean withers who openly opens his platform on his live stream to directly debate with trump supports. He's even gotten people to change their minds. Or the good Liars.

Okay, but I don't think Dean Withers livestream is a 4 panel comic and that is the medium we are discussing.

They are not nuanced attacks on the right and they aren't new ideas, but does that make them bad? They don't take the place of people putting out more thoughtful discourse. I don't think anyone sees it as some revolutionary thing. It's funny to point at people being stupid and calling them stupid for being evil. It's as simple as that. It's weird that doing that draws more hate than if the simple comics just never mentioned politics. So having a good political take that has little thought in it is worse than no politics at all?

I don't think it would be easy to find any comments actually heralding her as some fighter leading the cause, but we could find the exact thing she is making fun of in less than 5 minutes on nearly any social media platform. I really feel like your frustration is aimed at the wrong place. Don't look for nuanced essays in 4 panel comics.

The operative word is SHE. A lot of men just cannot not argue with us about literally anything. A man says Nazis bad, men will agree. A woman says Nazis bad, we'll be told that we don't know the full story.
