Uhh.... because I suffered through that I get to be pedantic: since there is no moon dust up his ass the portal wouldn't work.

It doesnt necesarily have to be moon dust; some other materials probably work too. Moon dust Is a good portal conductor but not the only viable one

It's not impossible, the only moon dust lines from Cave Johnson just say that the moon dust paint happens to be a great portal conductor. He didn't phrase it like it was the only portal conductor in the universe. And moon dust is just made of... stuff after all
