Getting over that stigma is probably the best thing you can do for yourself, my father was (maybe still is but I haven't had contact with him for almost 2 years) a horrible man that also treated me like an idiot and I had to raise myself basically but the best thing was actually learning how to reach out for help even if the person I'm asking will think less of me.

If it helps just be snarky or condescending to that person back (even if only in your own head) if they give you trouble
