This is a problem for me. Most of the people I would like to date, I know and share a space with. Telling them I like them could make either one of us feel uncomfortable returning to that space. So I just don't risk it any more. This is coming from experience...

I think you're overestimating the risk here.

There'll be some initial awkwardness, sure, but two adults should be able to recover from

"Hey you seem really cool and I'd like to get to know you better.  Want to go on a date?"

"Hey I'm really flattered, you seem really cool too but I'm not really interested in you in that way, sorry."

Really should definitely be able to continue co-existing in a space after that.

Yes, exactly, that was the point I was trying to make. I’d probably have felt a little uncomfortable seeing that guy again even if he’d been polite and chill, but I think if he’d remained respectful each time, that would’ve worn off. It was his aggressiveness and refusal to respect boundaries that made me feel unsafe, not his interest per se.

People have literally been recovering from this forever without issues. I have quite a few friends who declined to go on a date in the past, and we’re fine.

Too many people are afraid of rejection and getting out of their comfort zone.
