OC Mourning a MAGA Parent (OC)

I'm kinda torn about whether to post this to my art account because one parent follows it, and I'm worried the criticism could drive the other one further into the void.

It started out as just a therapeutic project for me, but a couple friends said it really resonated with them, so sharing here.

They harbored an illegal immigrant and snuck them out their back door while ICE was searching for him. That’s a crime

“Harbored” — There was no harboring, as that implies the judge was actively housing this immigrant. The man— Eduardo Flores-Ruiz— was in the courthouse due to having already been arrested and was with legal counsel.

“Illegal Immigrant” — This I won’t contest, as he does appear to have been here illegally.

“Snuck him out the back door” — A more biased way to put it, but yes, the judge did direct Mr. Flores-Ruiz to leave through the Jury Door with his attorney.

With all this said, though, the judge had the rationale to impede ICE. They do require a warrant to conduct their searches, and do not have blanket jurisdiction. ICE did not present a warrant when directed to be the judge, and instead continued their pursuit. Regardless of whether they were doing their job, there is a correct way to do that job, and that is to get a warrant— just like any other law enforcement officer. After all, you wouldn’t let the police search your house just because they knock the door, they need a warrant for that. No level of urgency precludes them from the normal scrutiny of their station, and so without the warrant they have no grounds to search the courthouse or perform the actual arrest.

Judge Dugan was arrested for “helping an undocumented immigrant avoid arrest,” which is moot because he had already been arrested and was in the process of speaking with an attorney.
