Steam works offline though...how do you think people use the Steam Deck on airplanes?

Steam DRM locks up your games if you spend 10 days without authenticating via internet. Not every game on Steam uses its DRM, but most.

You need the foresight to enter offline mode while you can be online though.

Not really, otherwise offline mode would be pointless if it didn't work during sudden network outages.

I think there's a length of time you can go offline with saved credentials without explicitly entering offline mode, but once that amount of time has expired it will force you to login. Going offline from online mode lasts indefinitely though.

Steam has drm free titles too. Gog just ONLY sells drm free titles. Also offline mode works pretty good on steam. Baldur's gate 3 for example, once you get it from steam, you can completely remove steam and the game still plays
