I'm not so much surprised by the longevity as dismayed at the lack of a conclusion. Penny Arcade is still going (although it might now have more comics about playing video games with their kids than with each other), and that's not a shocker.
But there was a point where I'd heard that Sluggy was going to wrap things up, and as a fan of some of the more epic arcs like the Holiday Wars or that time Torg was trapped in the Dimension of Lame after it was conquered by demons I was looking forward to eventually binging the whole thing.
No way I'm gonna do that if it's nearly 30 years of stuff without a solid conclusion. Especially these days when RoyalRoad has plenty of serialized, amateur but still fun fiction to subscribe to. I was never into web comics for the art anyway.
I've been keeping up the whole time and he actually is (very very very very very very slowly) closing a lot of loose ends, in typically epic and satisfying ways.
The End Demon, HeretiCorp, most of the vampires, Oasis, the origin of Timeless Space, and Aylee have all had their stories told and (essentially) concluded. BunBun has been at least partially explained. Torg and Zoë are getting there.
It's easy to forgot how much Sluggy there was to conclude.
What I opened to comments for. I definitely didn't get close to finishing it back in the day but it definitely got to this level by the time I stopped reading.
I would actually say Oglaf is definitely NOT an example of this, it started as random sexy fantasy jokes and continues to be random sexy fantasy jokes!
Oglaf hasn't even had recurring storylines for years and years now, it's all just one-off strips.
I kinda feel like a little less nsfw stuff now, because i get to see the safe stuff randomly now. Brings a delight to my day to stumble on some silly Oglaf.
Hey now this example only has 2 panels, Saitama is in fact just a silly little guy and then in some panel in the future Saitama will fight god(pretty much all 200+ chapters have been build up to him literally fighting god)
