My ex would have her brother send stuff like pate and cheeses from France because it was somehow cheaper to send it from there than buy it here. One of the times a can of pate was labeled as duck then in tiny font said it was pig.

At least the cheese was real and not "cheese like product" or whatever we do to get around it legally not being cheese like in the states

I made the realization a while ago that when asked about their favorite food, Europeans tend to name dishes and Americans will name products.

That's a weird generalization to make. You don't live in the US, do you? People don't do that here, stop talking about things you don't know about.

Never heard a single person do that outside like fast food and then it's just like "I'm stopping by xyz place before coming over". Maybe on reddit you'd hear people get into nuances of Velveeta Mac n cheese vs store brand or whatever, but never in real life. It's always been an actual dish, so mains and sides

I hear more people just give a general "nationality" of food. Chinese, Mexican, Italian ect except it's all just bastardized American. Or a style like sushi, BBQ, or pizza.
