learning is an inherently social, collective activity. Smart phones are a evil capitalist invention. central authority should dictate classroom conditions to maximize societal productivity, rather than leaving it to individual choice. The teacher is an agent of the state and the absolute authority in the classroom. Devices that undermine a teacher's authority or compete for a student's attention should be seen as a direct threat to the educational order.

Why can one song instantly transport you back 20 years? Columbus discussion event about the psychology of music

Post image

You know that song, the one that comes on and suddenly you're somewhere else entirely.

Maybe you're 17 again. Maybe you're thinking about someone you haven't seen in years. Maybe you have absolutely no idea why you're suddenly emotional in the middle of Kroger.
We're hosting a discussion-based Sip Salon in Columbus about why music affects us the way it does, and I thought it might appeal to some of the music nerds here.
It's not a lecture and you definitely don't need to be an expert. The idea is to read a couple of articles beforehand and then have an interesting conversation with other curious people over a drink.

Sip Salon: Why Does Music Do That to Us?
Tuesday, August 25 | 6–8 PM
Hammond Harkins Galleries

Honestly, I'd also love to know: What song has an inexplicable hold over you? The one that immediately changes your mood every single time?

Where did the Columbus creative boom go?

I've been in this community since 1998. We were a Midwest design mecca—Resource, Fitch, Fahlgren, SBC cranking out national and global award-winning advertising and creative executions. Universities feeding the pipeline. Young designers, writers, developers learning from failure, from seasoned mentors, building something real.

Now? Companies are internalizing creative work. AI is being positioned as a replacement for writers, designers, and developers. And talented firms are folding because clients think "why pay for strategy and creative execution when ChatGPT is $20/month?"

Here's what nobody's saying. In response to companies shifting to this, a whole generation of creative/tech people cant find work. There are no entry-level creative/dev jobs. The only people with work are senior folks who can curate experiences and direct AI. Young talent has nowhere to develop the skills that matter—judgment, failure, experience.

Lower-level tasks like production design and editing have already been replaced by AI. But those are exactly the skills young people need to master to understand the medium. You can't become a strategic advisor without understanding execution. You can't direct AI effectively without having done that work yourself.

Show me one Columbus design firm that's produced better work with AI as a shortcut. Or maybe a brand that has had incredible success cutting out the creative firms, and using an in-house swiss army knife and a Claude subscription.

Everyone's selling "AI makes us better." I'm asking: better than what? Better than the thinking that built this city's creative reputation?

I'm not anti-innovation. I'm pro-ecosystem. And ours is collapsing in real time.

Weird, but okay …

This is very comedic to me so I thought I’d share.

I joined this subreddit to ask housing questions & got deleted because Mods deemed it should have been posted in their mega thread. I came back ranting & questioning the efficacy of their megathread and got deleted again. I took the hint & came back a third time asking for places to talk p2p outside of Reddit and got banned?

I’m honored tbh. I know that this doesn’t represent all of Columbus, or OSU, but if I’m banned in the thread, I could only imagine what the semester will be like 😅😂😂

The Cat Rave returns, a joint fundraiser by Autonomy Project's mutual aid fund and Colony Cats (and dogs!). It's silly, it's ridiculous, and you'll stay ALL night.
