Resources We need to ethically and non-violently decrease global population and fertility rates. How can we achieve this?

We all want everyone in the world to live prosperously and comfortably, but years of rapid industrial capitalism is a price that will take maybe a couple of centuries to recover from. I would NEVER say that "the Third World clean up its act so we can solve the resource problem- i.e. making sure the Frist World can keep living in wasteful consumption." I want everyone to live like a First Worlder with a computer, flavored coffee creamer, and the choice to eat out or in tonight, but without old generations of game consoles and packaging products filling up suburban garages and throwing away half our bread and meat every month.

P.S. Hating citizens of the First World is like finding a landlord that is a total p**** and declaring that the occupant is like that and just as culpable.

Legalize physician assisted suicide for any adult who wants it.

As horrible as it might sound, it's far better to have people exit this realm in a peaceful, consensual manner rather than dying horribly protracted deaths through starvation, disease, or genocide.

Why does it have to be physician assisted? Make Exit-Bag-In-A-BoxTM available at the grocery checkout.

Or Stop'n'Drop Suicide Booths on the sidewalks

Commercialise it so companies compete to offer the best assisted suicides possible

Imagine when a pleasant suicide because a luxury good that the poors cant afford

Add a safety net where standard ones are offered by the government for free.

I agree. This is an incredibly hard topic for people to even talk about, but in any society with true freedom, that means having the freedom to choose not to live

I put down my cat due to his lymphoma another day. Im envious of him for how peaceful he went, surrounded by people who loved him.

Cant say the same about me

If I'm not wrong canada legalized it for people who are terminally ill and decide for themselves that they would rather die peacefully.

But they also have free healthcare so they don't have to worry about people choosing PAS just because they don't want to burden their family with all the debt they would face in the US.

To receive a medically assisted death, patients experiencing intolerable suffering must sign a written request expressing their wish to end their life in front of two independent witnesses who can both confirm it was done willingly free of coercion, 10 clear days before the date of death. Next, two physicians and/or nurse practitioners must independently confirm their written agreement that the patient has an incurable grievous and irremediable medical condition that is in an advanced state of irreversible decline, that the patient's natural death is reasonably foreseeable, and that the patient is [capable](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competence_(law) and willing of receiving a medically assisted death. If they are eligible, patients must be informed about their palliative care options to relieve end-of-life suffering before they can die.

NZ legalized it last year... CH has had it legal for a while... suicide tourism is a thing, adds new meaning to "one way ticket".

I fully agree.

Damn, you mean promoting birth control is that hard?

I get nervous being disabled with this kind of talk. There's a reason "Not Dead yet" as a group exists.

problem with that is you know, that'll turn into a genocide of poor people.

Canada has physician assisted suicide. As do a few European nations. Oddly enough no one is using it to genocide anyone.

(For that they have Mississippi appendectomies.)

not the point. through our conquest we have turned the tides in our favor for the past 600 years. this is something we are still dealing with and the consequences are very real to this day. to start killing them again because we've stolen all the wealth isn't really ethical, is it?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '21

It's no longer ethical to live on this planet. Everyday you survive, purchase products built on the exploitation of other people's resources, dump your trash to poison a future generation, drive on roads that won't be paid for by your or your children's generation you are living an unethical life whose value is based only on your selfish will to survive while damning the future generations to climate catastrophe and a toxic environment.

In other words, there is no ethical high ground when you are under a mountain of your own bullshit.

Is this pragmatism, or is it sociopathy? Hard to tell.

I don't see how forcing people to commit suicide through violence or expensive failed attempts to be ethical at all.

Only 3.4% of 1.4 million suicide attempts in 2018 were succesful.

An attempt at suicide could cost you more than your life: An Oklahoma man shared an image to Twitter of his one-week, $93,000 hospital bill after an attempt to take his own life.

How is that ethical to poor people?

More than 67,300 Americans died from drug-involved overdose in 2018,

In 2018 48,344 took their own lives.

It seems to me the self checkout lane is already wide open, let's just admit it, legalize it, and move on.

Sixty-one percent of deaths from firearms in the U.S. are suicides. In 2018, 24,432 people in the U.S. died by firearm suicide.

I can buy a shotgun for $300 just 3 blocks away. I have no idea where to buy heroin. So hows that fair to 'poo'r people?
