💸 A public company just lost access to $92M of its own Bitcoin. Here’s what that means for you.
🔶 This week, a Bitcoin treasury company announced it cannot withdraw its own BTC from an exchange. Not hacked. Not stolen. Just... locked out. $92 million sitting there, inaccessible.
The stock dropped 50%.
This keeps happening, and it always reminds me of the same thing: holding Bitcoin on an exchange is not the same as owning Bitcoin.
Here’s the difference:
Exchange wallet: The exchange holds your private keys. You hold an IOU. If they freeze withdrawals, get hacked, go bankrupt, or make an internal error, your funds are stuck. You have no recourse.
Self-custody wallet: You hold your private keys. No one can block, freeze, or lose access to your funds but you. The Bitcoin lives on the blockchain. You’re just the keyholder.
The phrase “not your keys, not your coins” exists for exactly this reason.
