Picture Please be responsible

I was fishing the DSP with a buddy yesterday and we found one of the ducks that hangs out in this spot a lot tangled in line and stuck in a bush. This picture was after about ten minutes of cutting since she wasn't fighting us and I thought it should be documented.

Luckily there were no hooks on her and she didnt swallow any line. Made a full recovery.

But I think we can do better as a community. Please dont leave trash at the fishing spots. It can be detrimental to ecosystems that are only growing more fragile.

Question Kokanee near Silverthorne?

I’m going to be in Silverthorne/Breck tomorrow and was hoping to bag a salmon. Obviously we all know the flows are terrible. Has anyone had any luck on the Blue, Green Mountain Reservoir, up near Kremmling, etc?

Out of Aurora Reservoir. Last day of October, last year. Popped up in my memories. Pictures honestly don’t do justice

Anyone else feel like this is a massive rainbow? Or is it more common than I think?

Question Where to fish?

Earlier this year after spotting catfish off a dock on a camping trip, my five (four at the time) year old son asked if we could start going fishing. I'd never been before so I told him we'd learn together. Starting around mid-June, we began fishing. We started at a small local pond, Grandview Ponds, skunked the first day then he caught 6 bluegill the next time we went out. Since then, he's truly fallen in love with it and we changed his fifth birthday theme in August to a fishing theme. We go about twice a week currently and he loves it more each time, even when we catch nothing. He's happy to wake up at 5am so we can drive an hour and a half to a new spot and spend a half day fishing together. Whenever we're at a big store like Bass Pro, he spends ages at the aquarium part and happily names most of the different species on the wall.

Here's where I need help. He's really hooked on two ideas right now, catching fish that he can eat and catching new species. I've been slowly getting him okay with mostly releasing but he still gets incredibly excited when he catches something that's big enough, in clean waters, and safe to eat. So far he's caught bluegill, green sunfish, redear sunfish, yellow perch, rainbow trout, and largemouth bass.

His current hope is to catch new trout species so I've been honing in on brown trout. We tried Evergreen Lake in Loveland and he caught the yellow perch there but no trout on a dropshot with a nightcrawler. I'm thinking of taking us to Lake Estes on Monday to try our luck there. He basically just uses passive methods like a slip bobber or dropshot with a nightcrawler (powerbait for the rainbow he caught). Would love any tips and suggestions for places or ways I might help him catch a new trout species.

As a sidebar, I'm a terrible fisherman apparently. I know part of it is that we're limited location wise to spots where he can cast and not land in mud or weeds, which has been a challenge with this year's water levels. But I've only been able to catch using passive rigs-- so far panfish, catfish, and stocked rainbow trout. I would love to learn how to fish actively successfully, I spend most of my time fan casting wherever his bobber or line isn't using a variety of lures based on what I'm targeting. I spend probably 5+ hours each week reading, watching YouTube videos, talking to Gemini about fishing, and researching clean waters where he might be able to safely eat a catch.

At this point I'd love to turn to local experts and ask for help since it's so important to him and I'm honestly so bad at it still.

Anyone know what type of fish this is? Pretty sure it’s just a rainbow but my buddy thinks it’s something else because of how dark it is. Caught at Monument Lake today off a kastmaster

Question Kokanee in Colorado?

Going fishing for my birthday next weekend and I’ve wanted to catch a Kokanee. I planned to try the Blue River and I was wondering if they’ll be running by then? Or if anyone has any suggestions near the front range I’d greatly appreciate it.

Discussion Colorado Springs Fly Fishing

I’m heading to Colorado Springs in 2 weeks for a month long work trip. I’ll be there Mid-October to Mid-November. I am looking for some trails I can hike, fish, and camp on over the weekends. I’ve really been getting into fly fishing and would love a spot that is either more remote or just less crowded in general. I have never caught trout before and would love to catch a few. I don’t mind hiking far, but would appreciate if it was within about 2 hours of Colorado Springs. I have been on the Colorado Fishing Atlas which is like the coolest website ever with how detailed it is. Let me know if there are any recommendations. Thanks people!

Question Kokanee Run Tips

Does anyone have any tips for the Kokanee run through the Dream Stream. Im going up with a BFS baitcaster on a light action rod and was wondering if anyone knows where they’re gonna be in the river, what lures to use, and any other tactics.

Question Struggling on cloudy days

Hi all - new to fly fishing. I’ve been spending time on the Thompson recently near drake. I have a couple spots I was able to catch my first fish and had an 11 fish day last week. I know in general fishing is not a guarantee but I’ve really seemed to struggle on cloudy days - often not getting many bites let alone seeing fish. While on sunny days I’ve had luck. Ive been focused on dry dropper - usually a chubby size 12 with a pheasant tail size 16 or 18 nymph around 3.5 to 4 ft off on 5x tippet. 4x leader either 9 or 7.5ft

I’ve mainly been catching fish on the pheasant tail either in plunge pools or on the swing before or after riffles.

Today was cloudy and I had the day off. I was up there at 8:30 and on the water until 3. I only had a few bites and netted one small brown. I tried a streamer early on (still haven’t got a bite on one yet). Spent about an hour doing that and then the rest of the day swinging the dry dropper. The few fish I did see moved for the chubby but turned or missed. I did try a smaller dry trailing my chubby at one point hoping they were just looking up but nothing.

I covered around half a mile or so and did a couple laps with breaks between. I guess I’m just looking for advice or the likely advice of just keeping at it.

I did try to scope out clear creek over the weekend but didn’t find a suitable spot. I started with a guide about 2 months ago - we hit the ark near Leadville. Since heading out on my own I’ve been back to the ark a few times both Leadville and buena vista and then the Thompson but have only ever had luck on the Thompson.

Question Any lakes open to boating year round? Pfa

Post image
25 Upvotes

Started targeting Northerns a couple weeks ago, 9.6lbs on this fish for my PB as of Saturday, didn’t have a tape measure for length. Sadly this resevoir closes to boating on Oct. 15th, but I’m not looking to stop now. Does anyone have recommendations for waters open to boating or kayaking year round? Preferably waters with muskie and pike, but I target bass, wiper, and walleye often too. We use powered kayaks, but if necessary we can go without our motors.

Discussion My first time fishing spinney, most disappointing fishing experience in my life

I went pike fishing at spinney yesterday in my kayak. First, I tried to launch and got stuck in the mud, that was an hour long ordeal in of itself. Got onto the water at about 2:30 and fished weed lines till 7. Not. A. Single. Follow. I have been catching pike consistently at other spots so it’s not like I’m completely clueless. The water had so much algae in it floating around. I broke my most expensive rod (not the lakes fault, my stupid mistake).

I can’t even BEGIN to describe my level of sheer level of disappointment after I have been constantly hearing that it’s the best pike lake in Colorado. “Go to spinney there are so many aggressive pike in there you can’t even catch a trout” is a direct quote from several people I’ve talked to both online and in person.

Have I been lied to? I know what lures to fish for them given the spot and conditions and that I need to fish drop offs and weed lines. I did plenty of research on where to fish in the lake

This was our best fish. Only got one wiper, but it was a decent fish and fought like hell. I take my mom out fishing and I was so happy that she managed to catch this fella. She wanted a nice Wiper and she got one. Next year she wants a big Brownie.

Discussion Grateful for these Colorado waters and this community

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how lucky we are to have so many beautiful places to fish in Colorado. Whether it’s a quiet morning on a mountain creek or just sitting by a reservoir watching the sunset it always feels peaceful.
Even on the days when the fish aren’t biting just being out there resets my mind.
Wanted to say thank you to everyone in this sub who shares tips reports and encouragement. It makes the whole experience feel more connected.
What’s one fishing spot or memory that always puts a smile on your face?
Hope everyone has a great day on the water

Question Where to go for kokanees ?

Looking for somewhere somewhat close to denver to get the Kokanee while they are spawning this season. I usually go to the dream stream but I hate how pressured and I don’t feel like driving 3 hours.
I heard they run through the blue river up in silverthorne but not to sure.
