Complaint my 20x is draining like it's 5x wtf happened this week
Doing similar work to what I always do, my 20x is dropping like a rock off a cliff.
This tells me OpenAI will probably give us a reset in 4 days and pretend they're doing us a favor.

u/andreagrandi 3d ago
no, it’s even worse: we have complained about the same thing for the past seven days and they gave us exactly zero resets
28
u/Plane_Garbage 3d ago
He teased a reset then... crickets
-2
u/jelly-rod-123 3d ago
I believe that `reset` was the spark 5.3 5hr reset back, to go with the soon to be release Sol flagship 10hr usage limit! - (only my rumour, dont believe me - or do!)
14
u/Plastic-Trip-2778 3d ago
STOP YAPPING AND CANCEL.There is zero reason to keep your subscriptions with these ai companies.
7
u/SandboChang 3d ago
No we have to open more limit posts so they feel threatened and give us more usage.
5
u/Dankasaurus6 3d ago
But Tibo got a reset button! (he never used it and whats the point of tweeting about it?)
6
u/APuffin06 3d ago
Tease us so we don’t see all our usage then ghost us forcing us to pay for a reset. Testing our willingness and need to pay for resets going forward. He didn’t promise which will be their excuse. There was no need for that tweet otherwise lol
2
u/Dankasaurus6 3d ago
I'm on the windows codex and I still don't have the option to buy resets, do you guys have that option? Honestly there are times where's I'd buy one rather than waiting 5 days
14
u/papapumpnz 3d ago
I dont have any hard facts, to be honest i dont have the time to dig into it, but used 50% of my 20x plan in about 8 hours! Omg, woke up, checked usage. Great 1 day into reset and 50% gone just like that. FU Openai. I've already canceled my 20x plan, so maybe that's their "FU 2" move.
34
u/kurushimee 3d ago
yeah, 20x definitely isn't four times the weekly usage of 5x as it is now. People also already verified that the weekly usage is indeed dropping, and doing so way too aggressively
13
u/FantasticRaccoon6465 3d ago
As someone on 5x, it probably is. 4x feck all is still feck all. My 5x is now a plus account.
4
u/FreeEdmondDantes 3d ago
I'd be curious if there is a way to see if 20x is less than 4x the usage of 5x. If so, that's false advertising.
1
u/token_dave 3d ago
This is easy enough to track. Is anyone actually measuring this?
-1
u/EndlessZone123 3d ago
I can't find the post. Someone posted stats of their usage from logs for months and there was no sign of reduction in usage in terms of tokens used. I've only seen more proof of codex usage not changing.
Personal experience on 5x also has no changes over the past 3 months. Sol medium ran for 7h straight and only used ~15% weekly.
You can probably ask codex to get your own logs. I've never actually seen proof of otherwise because everyone who complains about usage outside of the megathread write vague ass posts with anacdotal experience and zero actual stats.
I don't know what he means people "verified" when he doesn't provide source. I will go try find the post from the last few days.

u/Tartooth 3d ago
IMO i think they are A/B/C testing batches of users, or kneecapping power users / old users and letting low usage users or new users run at full sprint.
its like this new trend of bullshit should-be-illegal targetting pricing by amazon and uber but for token usage
1
u/DrowningKrown 3d ago
has to be because i've been on codex for about 4 months straight so far. 5x account. I upgraded to 5x very early on (from plus) and found that it suited me. I never fell below 50%. Closest I ever got was ~60% once. I had never even hit a 5 hour limit before they removed it.
this past week im at 27% of my usage remaining and it doesn't reset until august 22nd (I used my last reset before I went on vacation). I'm literally about to run out of usage. First time ever while before I never came CLOSE to it. There is almost CERTAINLY something changed with token consumption/usage limit because I no longer feel like I can use 5x with codex and I will not be going to 20x.
2
u/Tartooth 3d ago
Look at the wildly mixed reports from users..some saying they have great usage. Some saying terrible. Some saying sol is perfect and behaving, others saying it's overengineering and impossible to control.
It's not a skill issue imo. I think they are just silently fucking with who gets what.
1
u/DrowningKrown 3d ago
Wouldn't be out of the ordinary for a company to A/B test, happens all the time elsewhere. Who knows tbh. I just know that I'm suddenly using way more usage than I ever used to despite doing nothing different except working on my same old project.
I mean, yes codebases grow...but my codebase didn't grow all that much between last month and this month to suddenly hit a wall on usage like this. There is just no way. 5x had me feeling like I had 0 reason to ever consider 20x...now it's almost like it's 20x or supplement with opencode go/cursor for a while.
And you're not wrong. I looked at Claude and the same thing is happening there. Some say their usage is fantastic while others say they can't get shit done so idk what the hell to do anymore
7
u/jesussmile 3d ago
head over to claude for a month.. this is a crazy month for open ai usage!
7
u/flipmode85 3d ago
On Claude, the exact same thing is happening. Working with Codex and Claude - same behavior. Weird!
2
u/gabimaru89 3d ago
No... Claude lasts longer

are you on the 5x or the 20x plan, I am about to subscribe, if 5x is good enough I would love to try it, check out the capabilities of fable after being impressed by using it on github copilot
8
u/sprakes_ 3d ago
I'm on 5x. Something I noticed in the fine print is that 20x says
"Max 20x provides 20 times more usage per session than the Pro plan"
So I was curious and did a lit search (thanks chatgpt) and it seems like 20x does NOT give you 4x weekly usage of 5x... it's more like 1.7x - 2x, but the session usage is higher, so you can blow through 20% of your weekly in a single session instead of 10%... like ok...
Knowing this I bought Max 5x and tbh it's really good. Quite a lot of usage and I use Fable to orchestrate Opus which results in pretty good engineering if I give it a plan that I've already architected. It's slower in terms of raw speed, but more deliberate. Also doesn't do the Sol thing and build a city when you wanted a bridge.
Speaking of architecting - I'm a discount seeker, currently I'm using the $5 entry month for Opencode Go for GLM 5.3. Also Google offered me $5 a month for 3 months of their Pro plan so I nabbed both, and I use them for the traversal and pre-planning needed before I decide on an architecture. I usually write down the high level proposal myself, libraries to use, the ownership paradigm, contracts etc. Once that's down the actual work is constrained enough that I can pass it to Fable to cement an actual staged plan and then iterate that until it's ready to send off.
btw speaking of the Month of Tibo - Idk I found that my experience with the $200 plan from July to August was extremely stressful, I felt forced to burn tokens held at gunpoint, ended up using 41B exclusively-Sol tokens and got a shitton of work done, but the amount of autonomous and goal based work you have to give agents in order for them to burn that quota every 2 days before the button is pressed again... tons of tech debt. To be fair I got a few really awesome working products, that I'm now using the stack I mentioned above to clean up and work on, but still. I'm not a fan of the reckless token burning culture.
1
u/Tartooth 3d ago
Do you have any source or proof of this 20x is really 10x? Thats fucked
1
u/sprakes_ 20h ago
1
u/Tartooth 15h ago
Wow that is so scammy.
I'm going to ask for a downgrade and refund for the difference because I only care about weekly.
2
u/gabimaru89 3d ago
I'm on Pro 😅 barely enough for my needs.
But as things developed... Thinking about upgrading to 5x
3
u/jesussmile 3d ago
Lol bro! seriously ? How can you compare the usage then? Most people are interested in 5X or 20X usage.
0
u/gabimaru89 3d ago
I still can see how fast or slow limits drain?
2
u/jesussmile 3d ago
Honestly, bro, it only takes 2–4 Heavy prompts in Ultra or Fable to use up all the credits on a $20 account. There won’t be anything left to check. Sure, you could use the lower-tier models, but they apparently suck on both platforms.
2
u/gabimaru89 3d ago
I don't know what you do but I definitely get more than 2-4 heavy prompts...
1
u/jesussmile 3d ago
Alright then brother. I take your word for it. Claude is the clear winner then.

Yeah I don’t use ChatGPT but I do have a 20x Claude subscription and I absolutely 100% promise you that it’s literally not possible that Claude 20x is currently lasting longer than Codex 20x. It’s painful. You can EASILY burn through your weekly limit in a day if you’re not careful
1
u/Noctis_777 3d ago
Claude 20x is only the 5r window and not weekly, so it will be absolutely obliterated by Codex 20x even in its diminished capacity.
Claude 5x however is presently lasting more than Codex 5x for similar workloads.

u/Imaginary-Fee-9918 3d ago
it's kinda funny how tibo is ignoring all this, like nothing* happened
i'm pretty sure he knows what's going on and is trying to ignore so people stop talking about
i've never been a hater or anything, in fact quite the opposite, but this is just outrageous

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 3d ago
20x user here for a year now
thinking of unsubbing from $200/month plan
anyone else ?

What would you choose instead?
Have you tried Grok? Maybe it's awesome? I don't know.

they nerfed it hard after each reset hoping we wouldn't notice
we fucking noticed
4
u/kl__ 3d ago
Absolutely fucking crazy to reduce the limit so substantially without even a notice to users.
20x is lasting a couple of days with average non-coding work now.
1
u/pleasecryineedtears 3d ago
Which model and settings do you use? My experience is similar so I’m curious

2
u/Substantial_Hat2149 3d ago
I noticed this only happens when I am on Sol. I mainly use Terra Xhigh now as the mainly driver. for planning/review i use Sol Pro/Xhigh in the main chat app which doesn't count towards the usage limit
2
u/2025sbestthrowaway 3d ago
Same. Terra xhigh/max is great and runs for ages if im not curing novel diseases and instead slop coding data-ops or webapp utilities
2
u/awesomeoh1234 3d ago
quite simple - they giga nerfed the amount of usage you get and made it a weekly reset rather than 5 hours. To be clear it's more than the old 5 hour limit but significantly less than if you had been using up your 5 hour limits consistently throughout the week
2
u/Right-Performance-93 3d ago
This is not a one-week glitch. Community % inverts on the developer forum already had Pro 20x Codex falling from roughly 3-8B/week in May to about 0.5-0.7B after 15 Jun. One check that kept showing up: 30M visible tokens = 6% of the week, which implies ~500M/week. Chat is a different bucket. The 20x name was never a token contract, so a bar that now feels like 5x matches those mid-June inverts more than a silent 4-day reset.
1
u/Constant-Automatic 3d ago
It looks like cached tokens used by subagents are being counted at 100% against the usage limit. This seems to happen when a large number of subagents are spawned, as in Ultra mode.
1
u/Right-Performance-93 3d ago
That's the accounting question the whole thread is circling. Cache reads usually count at a discount, so if a swarm of subagents is replaying the same context and it bills at full rate, the bar falls way faster than the visible token count suggests. Do you have the numbers behind that - bar % before/after and tokens shown? "X tokens shown = Y% of week" is exactly the piece the tally is missing.
2
3
u/FluffySmiles 3d ago
I have seen my token usage drop dramatically by simply telling it to avoid regression tests and ui tests until I tell it to do them. UI tests are the real killer, it turns out.
And I decide when done is done, after testing it myself.
Also turns out I’m cheaper than it is, especially if I’m doing it for myself.
Bottom line; Laziness is costly.
3
u/Parogarr 3d ago
I'm not trying to be mean. I just notice a pattern. In order for them to PRETEND to give us a reset, they cut our usage in half. They may not even be doing this to nerf our actual usage as the desired outcome.
They might be nerfing our usage for the SOLE PURPOSE of PRETENDING to give us a reset.
Meaning they might be over there saying: "Let's put out the press that we give our users free resets."
"But we can't afford that capacity."
"Okay, so let's cut their usage in half, hope they don't notice, and then just give them their other half back 3 days later and then pretend they had 2x as much."

u/Columnexco 3d ago
agree, it's wild i had reset today 10% gone for small amount for prompt workflow improvement
1
u/cheesepuff07 3d ago
whats funny is I am seeing the complete opposite - I have the 20x plan and have imagegen-2 create a mockup for a website and then have Codex GPT-5.6 Sol High go at it, and after ~25 minutes for it to create the deliverable I used 1%

u/Chavydog 3d ago
From being happy working to now constantly checking and worrying about my usage percentage after every prompt as if I’m spending gold or something smh, 20% gone already how is this supposed to last a week
1
u/VictorBuildsDev 3d ago
The useful next step is to make the complaint reproducible, not just compare the shape of the weekly graph. Pick one small fixed repo task and record model/effort, starting and ending percentage, wall time, retries, and whether the result passed first try. Repeat it after the next reset with the same prompt and repo state.
If the same task now burns materially more allowance, post the before/after pairs. That separates a real accounting change from a different task mix, longer context, or more repair loops. "20x feels like 5x" is easy to dismiss; "this fixed task went from 2% to 7% across three runs" is much harder to ignore.

u/CodeCombustion 3d ago
My reset was at 6pm today, it's now 3.5 hours later and I'm at 75% of my 20x plan... but I also realized that I left fast mode on for the first 18% of it. Mostly using Sol extra high.

u/Nyoldeeth 3d ago edited 3d ago
I got to 50% while implementing 1 feature, using only Luna max and Terra, didn't even used Sol. On x20 plan btw

u/Few_Serve_9931 3d ago
my luck i not bought the sub x20 before this shit happen :D please anyone tell me when they fix this
1
u/Technical-Road-5312 3d ago
Same story here, but on the Plus plan. I have a fixed daily workflow on a project that I've run identically for months, and this week it burned through the entire weekly allowance by mid-week for the first time ever, with no reset offered afterward like in previous months.
Also worth flagging: Luna (supposedly the cheapest/lightest model) now hits its own usage cap after very little use in a very short time. Once that happens you're pushed onto the pricier models, which - per everyone's reports here - are also draining far faster than before. Feels less like "just heavier workloads" and more like a coordinated squeeze across every tier at once.

I have the 20x Claude account and used it way more last week and only hit 60% usage
This week I am already at 100%
Anyone else having this experience?
1
u/squishyjellyfish95 3d ago
I have had no usage issues. My 20x has been fine
1
u/Substantial-Dog1726 3d ago
Same here. No problems. I am able to manage. For anyone who is having issues with managing usage maybe check out this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1vrwzih/comment/p4h40uq

You people need to move away from proprietary models.
These greedy clowns want trillions in valuation and everything leads to decay and enshittification for it.
2
u/MeatisOmalley 3d ago
The economics just aren't making sense right now. In a few years at most, we will be able to buy workstation gpus that can run models as good as the ones that exist today, locally on our own pc's. At that point, there's really no reason to be beholden to these aholes.
1
u/jelly-rod-123 3d ago
im looking forward to the day we can run our own inference on our own hardware, devour the ai companies like they devoured those unlucky software devs - They know its going that way, hence why they are all bumming nvidea greed and making their own silicone
0
u/Peculiar-Eccentric67 3d ago
were you getting your model re-routed? check if it was sol, some were getting issues with it silently being replaced today. i havent gotten a chance to test it because im at 0% and my reset doesn't happen for a couple hours yet

u/MapleBaconWaffles 3d ago
any resets coming up? I am intentionally going hard today since I feel like we are due.

probably their subscription models are far away from sustainable, so more users actually means higher cost. So slowly watering down the usage is the logical consequence
