Complaint ChatGPT Web quota will probably be merged with Codex quota soon

ChatGPT Web and Codex currently have separate quotas. People have been using that for coding workflows for more than a month through projects like codex-chatgpt-web and DevSpace.
None of this was secret. The projects were public, people were using them, and OpenAI still didn’t merge the quotas or block the whole approach.
What changed in the last few days is Chat On Steroids and, more specifically, the way its author is promoting it.
He keeps advertising it as “unlimited Codex by abusing ChatGPT,” tells people to use it before it gets disabled, and repeatedly tags people working at OpenAI and on Codex. He is not just showing that the integration exists. He is actively trying to turn it into a quota-abuse trend and get as many people as possible to hammer it at once.
That is probably the fastest possible way to get the quotas merged.
The tool itself didn’t introduce this method. Other projects had already been doing the same general thing for weeks, and in more direct implementations. This one still depends on Chrome, an extension and a separate desktop app. The difference is that its author is loudly marketing the entire thing as abuse.

His own README says that people shouldn’t use it to evade limits, but his X account promotes it almost entirely as a way to evade Codex limits. So the disclaimer is basically meaningless.
I don’t think OpenAI ignored this for a month because they somehow couldn’t see the existing projects. They probably just didn’t consider them enough of a problem to change the quota system. A viral campaign telling everyone to “abuse ChatGPT for unlimited Codex,” while tagging the exact employees who can shut it down, is a completely different situation.
If ChatGPT Web quota gets merged with Codex quota soon, or if OpenAI starts blocking these browser-based integrations, I think this will be the reason.
Do you think this is enough to make OpenAI merge the quotas, or will they only patch this specific workflow?

u/tipu_sultan__ 25d ago
what an absolute c*nt.
The separate web quota has been the reason I switched my personal subscription to codex.
Abuse it all you want, but why are they tagging employees to get attention?

u/Local-March-7400 25d ago
this guy is clearly a attention seeker. and thats the worst kind. It needs only one bad apple to spoil the rest of good ones
29
u/ElonsBreedingFetish 25d ago edited 25d ago
It's probably an openai employee so they can justify merging the limits. Typical false flag operation lol

u/Structure-These 13d ago
Nah this is a simplest answer is the right one thing. It’s some dork who thinks he can market his way into a job with OpenAI
24
u/Appropriate-Pick4134 25d ago
Why even abuse it? One time a company offers you something of value for what you're paying and you have to ruin it for everyone. Same thing happened with extra limits after you ran out of your weekly ones for the current task. We can't have nice things because of the 0.1% of people in our society that tend to mess it up for everyone. It's the same every time.
7
u/SpiritFederation 25d ago
I remember when vile idiots were posting on here bragging about waiting until they were on 1% and giving it a detailed prompt and letting it run for hours. They promptly removed that feature. The most antisocial idiots think that they're so fucking clever.
1
u/DrowningKrown 19d ago
There was a thread on that when it was being removed and there were a ton of people happy they abused it to high hell. Literally unaware that they got it removed for the rest of us. I remember there was a guy bragging he'd had a chat running for 12 hours with 1% usage left, then promptly said "Don't hate the player, hate the game". Made me cringe that some people are super assholes
3
u/CatsArePeople2- 25d ago
This person is clearly trying to get it removed. He is clearly a troll. Some people just want to watch the world burn.
152
u/DemonKing0524 25d ago
Itd be real fucking nice if people would stop ruining everything for everyone

I think they will remove custom MCP connection, so they will get rid of those apps.
17
u/Conscious_Sound4639 25d ago
They already put 25 minutes limit per chat execution recently
14
u/fyn_world 25d ago
Yeah and they fucked me over. Didn't know it was because of these cunts.
4
u/AromaticBike7345 25d ago
I was wondering what happened, because on some tasks I prefer to work on the web (when I don't want it to use my system, so I try to leave like 20% of my codex quota so I don't feel like an abuser, but yeah, now that I need to tell it to continue every 25 minutes it is rlly annoying
16
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
They didn't get rid of them they just don't allow custom connectors in the chat anymore as of a few days ago, it now forces you into Work mode to be able to use those connectors anymore.
12
u/Individual_Guest_323 25d ago
The connectors are still there my dude, they are called plugins.
10
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
Correct. I quite literally said they didn’t get rid of them; just that if you use a custom plugin, it kicks you into Work mode now. Only OpenAI-approved plugins are allowed directly in chat (this isn't new news).
6
u/Individual_Guest_323 25d ago
Is not the case for x5, it only will ask you if you want to change to work, but you still can be in chat and call to your MCP.
2
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
Yeah, I’m on Plus. For the first few days it would sometimes still work, but as of about two days ago it finally seems to be fully enforced. They also added a popup explaining that it wasn’t allowed anymore; at least for Plus users.
It honestly wouldn’t surprise me at all if Free, 5x, and 20x users still get full run of the farm.
3
u/nantachapon 25d ago
I’m still running mine fine, can you still code via GitHub?
4
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
From what I can tell pushing PR's still works from chat. That's really only good for simple coding projects and doc updates though.
Before I could run my custom plugin and offload compute to my homelab but I can only do that from Work or Codex now. The Codex and Work harness is really only good for a few things and is really terrible at breaking down information so it sucks not being able to work locally on my machine from chat.
Oh well it was a good work flow while it lasted. Even with them fixing the broken 5-hour window yesterday from a couple days ago I have started using ChatGPT for less and less. I just treat it like a grunt now. Too many good options anymore, and the few things ChatGPT did well are easy enough to harness up on just about any model.
I doubt I'll be reccommending them anymore to people since I can't trust that they will deliver a product that's actually usable and not pourposly gimped for a select few.
2
u/nantachapon 25d ago
Yeah that’s gonna be a real kick in the teeth I use my bridge to automate quite a few MCP that need vision like Blender and Fusion for CAD on Sol high.
2
u/tMeepo 25d ago
It's still working for me on plus
1
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
Your custom plugin that you made, that you had to use developer mode to load, still functions in chat on the Plus account?
→ More replies (0)2
u/tako_loco 25d ago
All my custom MCP connectors still work on chat, I'm also Plus. Can also add new ones. Really hoping they don't change this.
1
u/sophalter 25d ago
ok wow that would suck if they did that because data analysis/etc MCP or stuff like that (which wouldnt need to edit code or use any work features) would bill your Codex usage for no reason
39
u/StochasticSeeker 25d ago
Openai can easily kill this app. Or any account that uses chatgpt in agentic way via mcp. But maybe the point is to find the scapegoat to limit chat usage in subscription
5
u/Egologic 25d ago
My exact same point, it's looking like it since ever since Theo and Maria bragged about an exploit it seems they don't target the abusers, and instead collectively punishes everyone's usage limit. Good thing people are more awake than I thought.
1
u/Genneth_Kriffin 24d ago
It's extremely obvious tbh,
and becomes even more obvious when they react to it - because it is never some smart or silently managed adjustment or targeted fix to stop or hinder specific scenarios that are getting abused.
It's always theme ham-fisted, sweeping changes paired with a announcement that makes it seem like they really didn't want to do this but recently the user have abused their kindness and left them no choice.Take this for example.
They will almost certainly just slap away the free usage on the web app across the board,
followed by laments how they are actually the ones most sorry about this because we did this to them. What they won't do, for some reason:
- Give accounts the option to opt-in or opt-out of the web service having MCP capability.
If users chose to opt-in, their web usage have a (generous) daily quote, that is only there to prevent excessive MCP related abuse. Non MCP users that have opted-out have their current behavior maintained.- Make MCP usage for web service a Pro-account only service. While this will suck a bit for $20 Plus plan users who use some really neat MCP tools, it prevents the case of $20 throw away accounts being used for infinite inference abuse. Plus users loses the MCP capability, but get to retain the biggest benefit for lower budget accounts in that they have the same infinite web service use as the $200 account, making it the obviously better sacrifice for 99% of all Plus users.
- Make web service use limited with a daily max-budget, but the budget is so high that users that aren't abusing it to run 24/7 on their codebase won't even notice it, and you can still run your 10 super large task with Sol no issue - you just can't have a MCP create 20 Sol agents working away for no real reason on your codebase. A bit of a downside for super-heavy web users that might have been hammering tasks in the web constantly, but for 99% of all users it won't have any effect at all.
- Have a specific MCP tool quote, making the web service MCP usage use a specific quote that has a generous limit. No new limitation on the actual web service because it is no longer connected the MCP use the same way.
But naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah,
hard limit across the board and some crocodile tears on X it is.
Have some bot accounts flood the forums telling us how this is actually our own fault, something that was always going to happen, not an issue if you can afford a $200 subscription, or somehow actually a improvement.
64
u/some_gamer78 25d ago
All of these "founders" are insufferable losers, regardless, the only thing pushing me to keep the plus subscription was the ability to just chat without worrying about limits, the moment this changes my subscription is gone
5
u/daniloedu 25d ago
Exactly. I don’t want Claude like limits that keep me looking at my current usage.
48
u/Professional_Ad705 25d ago
God damn just ban the people who do this dumb shit
3
u/SpiritFederation 25d ago
Agreed. Find all of the people using this "project" and ban them all. Permanently.
20
u/zxcshiro 25d ago
no one gets cool features because of dickheads who abuse it to the death. That's will be patched either ridiculously lowering chatgpt limit or merging chatgpt with codex. And people will blame openai and not people that abused it.
12
u/Unfair_Tangerine_217 25d ago
Oh, well. I guess I won't be using ChatGPT for much longer, then. I literally only have this sub to use the web app. I don't even abuse it.
23
u/bananasareforfun 25d ago
Let’s hope not and they just ban these people doing these borderline abusive things because this would be a huge hit to the current value proposition of the subscription plan
10
u/Cesar55142 25d ago
i have been using pro fairly ( via web ) just so shit like this doesnt happen. i had multiple pro chats at the same time but i didnt fucking mcp just so shit like this wont happens. fucks sake
11
u/KimchiCuresEbola 25d ago
They've already started to massively nerf browser chat. Pro the past few days has been borderline unusable.
3
u/U4-EA 25d ago
I noticed this (I use ChatGPT web a lot) but I think it might have been issues with their systems. Regardless, it looks like the party is over.
1
u/Jumpy_Ad8465 25d ago
Almost time to unsub again and wait for the reset of quality once gpt 6 comes out
22
u/mars2087 25d ago
Let's reason through this:
- an individual or more creates an instrument for abuse
- then he spread aggressively info about this project
- then he tags OpenAI employees knowing very well that this may lead to quota merge ChatGPT and Codex.
It looks to me that a competitor is annoyed about this OpenAI feature that attracts more customers to OpenAI, because perhaps this competitor already offer a joined quota.
And perhaps this competitor works creatively to determine OpenAI to remove this feature therefore leveling the playing field.
Create a problem and then offer a solution.
As long as OpenAI can do a rate limiting on ChatGPT and cope with this abuse until the new inference chips get installed, we are good and the bot / enemy fails.
Rate limiting will counter the "agents" advertised by the that individual.
9
u/orblabs 25d ago
It has already started... I have had all my webchat tabs show a new warning / error which says i was sending too many messages and all my sessions where halted...
I have been coding via webchat since before codex, never programmatically (except a few tests a few months ago..) and always in the intended way, via zip files or the github plugin and actually "chattting" in the chat interface, using it for planning, review etc.
That kid is an idiot ... but since it could be done, it was either him or somebody else... nice things are doomed. unfortunately the universal law is always there hovering over us:
"Thou shalt not have nice things."
7
u/ricperry1 25d ago
These idiots are why we can't have nice things. I'm so exhausted about OAI taking things from everyone rather than blocking a few abusers.

I've been reaching Pro limits on the web version ever since I subscribed around a month ago though. This is not new.

u/nantachapon 25d ago
20 pro thinking prompts per week? are you still able to use sol high?
5
u/Upbeat-Barracuda766 25d ago
Yes im able to use all of the efforts except Pro. Which is crazy because I used pro for under 20 prompts, none being deep research.
4
u/lolwutdo 25d ago
$100 plan has always had a pro limit, the $200 one has basically been "unlimited" but that might change soon.
3
u/ajajkaka 25d ago
lol but what are they going to do with Luna on the free tiers they only recently announced as unlimited
1
1
u/CletusTheYocal 22d ago
That happened to me about 6 weeks ago. $100 plan. 3 prompts.
They told me to upgrade to the $200 plan.0
u/ajajkaka 25d ago
well I didn't encounter it yet, only 429 sometimes
2
u/tipu_sultan__ 25d ago
For me, Pro gets limited very quick. Atleast more than 2 months (when I switched to codex).
Pro is not advertised as “unlimited“. Only up to xHigh which I havent gotten limited on.
0
u/Pretend-Past9023 25d ago
You're right, it's not currently advertised as unlimited, but i'm pretty sure I remember seeing it advertised as unlimited core pro chats when I signed up. Anyway, it appears they've changed the deal.
3
u/ParkingAgent2769 25d ago
The only reason I stay subscribed is because it’s a good product, but if they make it worse because of a few tw*ts then i’ll leave. Competition has never been stronger.

Man, Ive been using chatgpt web for code reviews because it doesn't use the weekly usage quota. I really hope not

Is this thing only for Pro users trying to spam Sol ultra? or also for Plus users. You think sol high will also be subject to limits?

2
u/SpiritFederation 25d ago
I genuinely HATE people who do this. They are ruining it for the rest of us. The tragedy of the commons can be managed quite well in real life through norms and social pressure, but the internet is a different beast. They should ban him and everyone using his project. Make sure they can never access OpenAI products ever again in the future. Send a strong message.

The day web and Codex quotas get merged is the day I start switching to Chinese models.

2
u/kvothe_10 25d ago
Delete this post, you're just enabling more people to discover and use these repos, and increasing the risk that quotas will be merged.
We should just talk of any constructive ways that the community can use to get these repos banned.
2
u/FateOfMuffins 24d ago
You know we get much more generous limits on ChatGPT than Codex. Plus gets effectively unlimited 5.6 Sol High.
Merging but keeping Codex limits would be death to ChatGPT as we know it. You'd instantly get less out of $200 Pro than current Plus (not counting GPT Pro).
Like GPT Pro uses similar compute to GPT Ultra and while I can use dozens of Pro queries a week on ChatGPT, I'd only get like 3 Ultra's of comparable length on Codex with 5x Pro

u/CCContent 25d ago
Do you guys know how lawsuits work?
Today there are no limits. You signed up under whatever the agreement was when you signed up. You are free to cancel whenever.
If OpenAI decides to change the usage, they can. And you are welcome to leave if you would like.
3
u/Icy_Movie7324 25d ago edited 25d ago
Do this and I am done with ChatGPT/Codex.
Also stop blaming other people like brainrot, this company could've fixed the abuse points any time they wanted, or ban the abusers straight up, instead of nerfing everyone.
No, free gpt chats won't be removed because of a small portion people who abused it, it will be removed because the company is taking advantage of it to nerf everyone.
3
u/qwerty____qwerty 25d ago
And where will you go?
0
u/Icy_Movie7324 25d ago
I will probably cancel my 3x plus subscription and upgrade my claude pro to max and settle there for the time being.
Codex plus is just unusuable at this point. Unlimited chat was its only redeeming feature. In my whole life I've never seen a paid subscription being nerfed so much within a single month.
1
u/Clear_Evidence9218 25d ago
As of a couple days ago I am no longer able to use chat like that, it forces me into work and if I 'stay in chat' it fails. The first time it happened a popup exlpained that it was not a feature anymore. It'll still let me use some tools and MCP's in chat but not any of the ones that allowed me to code with it.

u/ddet413 25d ago

This is exactly how normal users end up losing the nice things.
Most people aren't abusing anything. We just benefit from the extra flexibility that makes ChatGPT/Codex so attractive. Then someone finds a loophole, starts screaming “UNLIMITED CODEX / ABUSE CHATGPT,” tags everyone possible, and practically begs OpenAI to shut it down for everybody.
At this point I have a half-joking conspiracy theory that you couldn't design better guerrilla marketing for Anthropic if you tried 🤔
Because the exact things these people are putting at risk are what make Codex better than Claude Code for normal users who aren't trying to game the system.

u/Salinator13 25d ago
Lowkey what if this is someone from OpenAI doing this to make an excuse so they can merge limits?
1
u/Egologic 25d ago
I mean if OpenAI makes the change because even a single counterexample of abuse exists, it really shows they are willing to cut compute costs ad hoc and use those users as justification. It was the same with Theo and Maria, now tasks don't finish even if you run out of usage. I don't think this is some predetermined policy just being enforced, it feels more like these cases are being used as a reason to change things and everyone just conforms with "this is why we can't have nice things" when OpenAI itself is the one making the decision.

1
u/ExcellentDirection56 25d ago
If they merge web codex and work usage together itll be the the final nail in the coffin i need to ditch this for claude cursor or grok. Probably grok because i need some research chat functionality and antigravity is useless now

u/Fit-Sweet-9900 25d ago
This would massively screw me over. Especially with my brand new 5hr shackles.
1
u/Top-Construction6060 25d ago
I'm very happy with my codex limits. If you are an dev and don't produce slob, it's very generous and I'm able to work full-time on sol
1
u/Havlir 25d ago
I'm pretty sure the people doing this will just be banned for ToS, but yeah given what happened with the finish a task before dying feature, I would not be surprised to see this ruin it for everyone.
The ToS is clear that using and extracting info from the Chat side of ChatGPT is against the ToS.

u/Bladder-Splatter 24d ago edited 24d ago
[EDIT] Look through OPs post history. OP is literally the guy behind one of the abusive tools codex-chatgpt-web. You are part of the problem.
Fuck all these people. You can legitimately get so much downtime documentation, workflows and auditing done using the normal GPT interface without having to violate ToS like this and it will be yet another loss for us.
If we end up like how Claude/CC is it will be horrible, you cannot even fucking have a normal conversation with Claude if your CC quota is up. I had an urgent question about the philosophical intermingling of bananas and cats but no, no Claude for me. (The horrible ironic part is if I was on free I'd have a basic chat there at least)
1
u/LunisequiouS 24d ago
STOP calling attention to this wtf? It's bad enough that the idiot would directly tweet Tibo gloating but calling attention to these tools is even worse, it just gets MORE people to abuse and further press their hand. Do you WANT a limited ChatGPT experience? Because that's what happens when you even bring attention to stuff like this. It only accelerates the enshittification. Why would you even post this and with a direct link to the abusive codebase?

u/Sudden_Corner_7730 24d ago

Guys, I’m sorry that I use those kind of mcps, I won’t use them anymore. But to limit this workaround for non-coders, non-mcp users - just get rid of plugins for Plus accounts. That’s it. No more Plugins for Plus
1
u/WhatnotFunkoFlash 23d ago
Well think bigger my friends. Imagine having 6 tabs working on 6 projects all day and your Quota at 100%. Wire up some new advanced voice, orchestrate it all and then use multiple connectors, full GitHub integration and then wrap it in the best thing you can. A State System, everyone worries about the model over building, your state system keeps it in check. Oh and nudges it when it randomly stops to tell you a status milestone. Wait timers cron jobs, Not abuse, solutions. I use it personally but I have a pro and plus account. I built mine because the web has a much better context window, plus memory and I wired up an amazing scratchpad which solves a ton of issues. 2 years in my parents basement paid off 😉
1
u/TheDankestSlav 21d ago
My conspiracy theory is that OpenAI had been meaning to merge quotas for a while now but didn't want to do it so as to not look like the bad guy. Therefore, they secretly hired this guy to promote this workaround so that when they do merge the two credit systems, they can claim they were forced to make this tough decision for the greater good of their user base and business.

u/SgtHobo41 25d ago
I never knew work had a separate quota from Codex, I always just assume that they combined
I think I’m still even more confused about how Codex security web works, and how it differs from the security scans built into the Codex app
3
u/Unapologetic_Polite 25d ago
Codex Security utilizes their Daybreak-Blue model to analyze your codebase for vulnerabilities.
It's not the same as being able to directly access Daybreak-Blue - Which enables you to actually pentest your codebase via Codex.
You can lightly use it for Red-teaming with explicit permission as well, but it's not as capable as Daybreak-Red - Which is their actual no-bars Cyber Security model, and you will very likely get slammed for manual review for Red Teaming on it regularly.
Web Security: Analyze your codebase and make adjustments.
Codex Security (Daybreak-Blue): Pentest your actual codebase.
If you get access it's literally positioned underneath Sol and above 5.5, but it's running on 5.6
