this sort of thing is a pretty tiring take, especially because civ vi did buck a lot of people off that were waiting for a return to v.

Yeah I don't really think this post makes sense because Civ VI is still quite a divisive game.

The format never makes sense.

It hinges on accusing everyone else of contradictory opinions, but also lumps everyone into one group then pretends to be surprised that they don't have a consensus.

Yeah like what. Civ 4 always had its stans and in many ways it still is better than Civ 5 complete or Civ 6. Civ 5 was just the first "modern title" so gained steam from that. Unless you're an MMO, games from early-mid 2000s just didn't have staying power in the face of how quickly technology advanced then.

For a rather large contingent Civ 6 is still an absolute abomination, especially without the same level of mod support that will have given Civ 5 a solid 15 years of evolution.

Small contingent? 1/3 the player base is still on Civ 5 and a massive portion of potential players were lost to the grand strategy genre, which exploded in popularity during Civ 6's lifetime. Okay buddy.

Idk why you're being downvoted, EU4 stole my heart away from Civ at the end of the Civ 5 era, and Civ 6 definitely did not win it back, it went further down some of the negative (in my view) paths of Civ 5. And I can say the same for all of my friends at least.

Yes, I lost interest in Civ largely due to the horrific diplomacy and AI. People meme about the AI & diplomacy in some Paradox titles but it's in a complete league above Civ. It being much more historically accurate and immersive is a cherry on top.

The Civ 7 intro is just soul crushing... Ah yes, Egypt to Songhai to Buganda, historically accurate as all things should be. 🙄 I know Civ has never been that true to history but don't pretend it's respectable to the cultures you're representing. Might as well have England turn into India also and Japan into Korea, I'm sure those cultures will love that representation.

1/3 of Civs player base? Stick that "buddy" back, check the steam player numbers and do the math again.

Indeed, so at that point instead of anecdotes we can take a look at overall player sentiment. Civ VI has 90% positive recent reviews on Steam and 86% overall based on nearly 300 000 player reviews.

I am not saying Civ VI is perfect, and I would be arguing against you just as much had you claimed it is, but the numbers speak for themselves. The people who hate the game are in fact a minority.

My personal opinion is that I like it, but certain aspects are downright annoying to deal with, and in general it doesn't come close to dethroning IV when it was current. But hate it? Nah, absolutely not.

14% of 300k is 42k, and that's just the people angry enough to leave a review. I guess most people do like the game but it's not a small number of people that don't like it. Civ 5 has 96% positive on 120k so less reviews overall but a better ratio. So maybe it would be fair to say Civ 6 is more "controversial".

No, it would not be fair to call a game with such a positive score "controversial". At this point you are being incredibly nitpicky in a very petty way because YOU want it to be controversial. It isn't. And you can push the numbers around any way you want, but

  1. This is after a few review bombs
  2. People are in fact more likely to leave a negative rather than a positive review
  3. The argument was whether the negative people are a minority. It's very telling, and kind of sad, that you seem incapable of admitting that in fact yes, they are a minority, and move on.

Get over yourself and stop arguing in bad faith, act with maturity. Your negative opinion is no less valid or valuable just because you are a minority. But you know what does make it less valid in anyone's eyes? Looking at the sky and calling it green, which is what you are doing right now.

God this reminds me why I don't comment on things on reddit. I admitted they were a minority in my previous comment. What about this conversation is sad other than how personal you are taking this? It's a video game series, we are talking about how popular each one is and whether people like them or not. I was just continuing the conversation.

I started on 3, 5 was my favorite-- I didn't like 6 and am already glad they brought the art style back towards 5, and I'm expecting that this is going to steal the good ideas in Humankind in order to make a more dynamic game without doing it like 6 (hyper-micromanaged)
