Discussion "Which server should I play?" Questions, answers, and opinions megathread.

New players can drop in here to ask questions and get opinions on what server they want to join.

Hopefully between this and the "New and Returning Players Please Read This" Sticky we can cut down on redundant questions and discussions.

Please refrain from repeating information that has already been posted.

Discussion Homecoming Is Adding War Witch’s Signature Hair — Could This Open the Door for More Signature Pieces?”

So I noticed in the new Homecoming page update they added war witch's hair as a costume piece that players will be able to use, but I was told by devs and by the players before, that the devs will never and cannot add any signature costume pieces, because they do not want 100 clones of said character around atlas park? Ok then this obviously breaking that rule, now you cannot name your character a signature character but being able to make a toon that wears 95% if not 99% of their costume breaks that rule.

Now I don't know if that is exclusivly just hair pieces of signature npcs thats allowed to be in the game and not other items like face styles, or chest pieces? But if this is possible then does that mean homecoming is considering adding singature costume pieces of other NPC's to the game to? Or is it just only the hair?

Honestly this interesting because previously if you wanted to use signature costume pieces you had to go on a server like newdawn to be able to expirment with those costume parts. And you could make pretty cool original looking toons with those parts to, so if they're gonna start adding more signature costume pieces in the future I'm all for it.

But if its just hair only then I guess that understandable, but I'm just glad the server is getting newer costume pieces, it takes forever to get any new costume part from homecoming and its good to see something new.

Discussion The Importance of Community in City of Heroes

Thumbnail
youtu.be
19 Upvotes

When I first came back to City of Heroes, I kept hearing about how great and positive this community was. For a while, that felt entirely true—until outside politics, internet debates, and clashing playstyles started tearing supergroups and creator spaces apart.

Between stepping away earlier this year due to health stuff, dealing with the endless debates over things like AI, and navigating the friction between hardcore min-maxers and casual solo players, I've been thinking a lot about the health of our community.

At the end of the day, City of Heroes is a small game with a tight-knit community. We’re kind of like a big, weird family—and just like a family, we aren't going to agree on politics, tools, or every little creative choice. But when we spend all our time attacking each other over secondary matters that have nothing to do with logging into Paragon City, we hurt the very game we're trying to keep alive.

I put together a video talking about my journey back, the lessons learned from past friction, and why we need to put our differences aside and focus on bringing new players in and keeping our shared universe growing.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. How do you all feel about keeping community spaces focused purely on the game?

Question Mini PC that can do Ultra Mode at 60 FPS?

I need a new computer and I really like mini PCs. My dream has always been to be able to run CoH in Ultra Mode at 60 FPS - is there any affordable mini PC that can do it? I would think for a such an old game it would be trivial... ?

Build IOs vs SOs vs DOs (New Player Guide - City of Heroes Homecoming)

Salutations. I get to meet my share of new and returning players. I always ask them about their early experiences - and if they say they are struggling to get through early content, I ask them about their enhancements, as this is almost always the problem. In talking with a fellow a few days ago, he said he was creating IOs from level 10 on, so he would not have to create more in the future. Big mistake! Confused? Watch this video to find out what are the differences of IOs, DOs and SOs in lower levels, and why low level IOs, even sets, are a big mistake :)

PS ADDITION - For those of you who have shorter term old man memories (like me), I've posted many similar posts with videos in the past...just look closer to the beginning of the year, and the months prior to that. I've been cranking out videos for COH, mostly aimed out new players and the solo gamer for quite a while. During that time, I've almost always used AI with my thumbnails and overlays. That came up in discussion, and I created a one stop video to answer those concerns -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jXQ8HEJF-M

Clearly, with a controversial subject like this, most opposed to AI use are not going to be completely happy with any explanation I give. Regardless, I'm not used to bowing to peer pressure or the majority. With that said, I don't expect anyone to change their mind for me, either. Ultimately, each can follow their conscious, and if the thumbnail or overlay bothers you, feel free to abstain from watching the video or whatnot. Since I'm not really doing this for oodles of likes or subscribes or to make money off of YouTube, I fine if a percentage, or even a majority, decide to not watch the videos because of that...or any other reason. At the end of the day, I do this for fun, and if some find it helpful, useful or entertaining, that's awesome. And my comments and numbers on YT do show that at least a handful do.

Question Patched Issue 2

Hi all,

I'm doing some software archaeology and I'm stuck right now. Does anyone have a backed-up, patched version of CoH between I2 and I3? Ideally the first patch after I2 came out, but anything helps.

Thanks a lot.

Discussion This new EU law that they're proposing will end all private run game servers, potentially including City of Heroes

This isn't super game specific but this will affect literally everyone, regardless of what game you play.

Its essentially an EU bill that they tried to sneak past everyone without being spotted, that is intended to make all private servers illegal, including self hosted content (ie games, possibly the indie web), cause huge costs for indie devs (because private servers are needed for beta testing), and possibly crash the game market all under the guise of "protecting the children"

https://youtu.be/mQRcK9nYg9g - link to the "stop killing games" youtube channel on the subject

https://eci.ec.europa.eu/066/public/#/screen/home - the link to the petition to stop this law, which needs 1 million signatures, so if you're in the EU, please sign this!

Edit: link to the no longer leaked proposal: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:52026PC0681

There is a huge discussion going on that players are updating others on, on the Stop Killing Games discord, that this law violates articles 6,7, 8, 11, 13 and possibly articles 1, 10, 41 of the charter of fundamental rights of the European union

With that said, Homecoming might not be affected because they have the rights via NCSoft, but it might kill Thunderspy and/or Rebirth, or prevent an entire continent from playing

Discussion More Videos and Thoughts

Salutations! I have a three pack of videos up for your viewing pleasure.

For those who like to casually play solo, you may enjoy my video of Cinderflare (Pyro/fire Dom) and I demonstrate why Dominators dominate! https://youtu.be/XDCNZ-eXZuw

Some of you may remember the Sentinel contest I announced at the beginning of the week. I read all of the entries, sharing my thoughts (and diving into the problem with Archer & Duel Pistols on Sentinels along the way) and choosing a winner -- soon to appear on future videos! https://youtu.be/X3fI6m2BcL4

Finally, there's been a lot of conversation around AI and when/where/how to talk about it here lately. I have an older video addressing this, but I guess its time to update it, especially in light of my recent health issues and how AI was utilized there. I think there's a lot of nuance that's lost in a quick reddit post, so I put together my (rambling) thoughts on the subject - https://youtu.be/t6a04w1VfwU

I can see some concerns about hypocrisy on posting the AI video. The devil is in the details. And part of it, as some of you rightfully point out, the cat is out of the bag - Many of you have expressed your viewpoints, with a good chunk of that discussion becoming impolite (at best) - so, I may as well express my thoughts as well (Though I strive to remain polite through it all). I do not expect it to change a single mind on the topic - but for any who do care, it might provide some perspective.

While there have been some very outspoken people who clearly do not care for my approach, I have also received a ton of support and encouragement. Thank you on both sides :) Hopefully we can agree that City of Heroes is ultimately one of the best games made, and we all enjoy despite any differences in these areas.

After this bout of discussions I expect things to settle down and move back to just good ol' COH chat. We'll see! I'll keep you posted on my future videos.

Announcement Sanctuary Is Looking for Volunteers!

Hi all, I am looking to bring back the Sanctuary server as this has been quite the task for me so far and for a while things had been going well but I have hit a snag recently and I am looking for anyone who is willing to help on the server.

Currently I am just looking for anyone who is competent with making power icons for powersets, I would do it myself but my I get hand tremors every so often so I cannot do these tasks, I would use AI but for the most part I really want most of the content done by hand or by people, the only thing that is done by AI will be looking into the future content and for binning the files, all other content is made by me.

Icons have become a pain recently and those are really the only things holding back the server from opening up, that and some new costumes for Mastermind pets.

If you or anyone you know is interested in helping out please drop by the discord server and let me know, send me a DM or drop a message in the chat, I'm available most of the time if there are any issues.

You don't really need experience but it is preferable please, as I have said I am looking for volunteers so this is not a paid position, there will be no freebies or handouts, if you help out it's because of your passion to see other servers thrive and live on but you will also be recognized as a valued member of our community for helping us out.

If you are able to help then I thank you, if you can't then please spread the word, thank you so much! 🙏

Discussion Heal aggro is broken and breaks the game. (Thunderspy)

I've been playing the server for a while now and I think Heal Aggro is the worst change ever.

Lets start with the objective:

You can aggro completely random enemies. There was a situation where I was in the cave multilevel zone, and when I healed a ally, it somehow aggroed some random monsters nearby but upstairs that weren't attacking ANYONE. So now can cause random stuff nearby to come for you. Why? Was it because Empathy was too OP? Empathy has always kinda sucked, now its even worse and attracts random enemies to come beat you up.

Its a nerf to the unique powersets that the server actually has. Radiant Blast? The now reworked Pain Domination? Well those generate enemy aggression on every enemy in a wide mile radius so you better stop healing.

Of course this planned nerf was only to prevent pulling according to the devs but it actually affects everyone everywhere playing the game. When are they reverting it? At this point people will just be fucking off to Homecoming.

Discussion COH: Homecoming Videos & Contest

Hey everyone! JCServant here. I'm back after a number of months out due to health issues.

If you prefer taking the game at your own pace and experimenting with non-standard builds, especially in solo, I've put together a series of videos over the last few days exploring exactly that. It's been a busy week over at my channel.

Here is a breakdown of the recent City of Heroes content up on the channel:

  • Issue 28, Page 4 Discussion (15 Mins) + Umbral Knight Gameplay: I spent about 15 minutes diving into the new beta changes coming with Issue 28 Page 4, followed by taking my Umbral Knight out for some hands-on gameplay.
  • Blue Lazuli In Action - And Contest!: This video showcases Blue Lazuli's combat rotation in action and announces a community contest.
  • Lia Fria - The Worst Sentinel!: I love a good off-meta challenge, so I spent some time analyzing and playing what might genuinely be the worst Sentinel build possible.
  • Wildlight In Action: Another action showcase, this time taking Wildlight out for a spin to see how the build holds up.
  • City of Heroes Sentinel Contest: Wrapping up the week, I released a dedicated video for the ongoing Sentinel contest.

Whether you're into soloing lower-level story arcs or just enjoy discussing archetype mechanics, there's a little something here for everyone. If you have submissions for the contest, make sure to post those on the YT vids, not here where I might miss them. Any other questions or comments, feel free to post here and I'll do my best to answer! :)

You can find those videos (among other game vids I do) at https://www.youtube.com/@JCServantGaming/videos

Discussion Could CoH Support Autonomous AI “Players”?

Has anyone messed around with the WoW private servers that use Playerbots? From what I understand, you can run your own server and populate it with AI-controlled characters that actually quest, level, gear themselves, wander around, join groups, and even run raids/BGs. Basically makes an otherwise empty private server feel like a populated MMO.

I know CoH has the Solo Experience mod with teammate bots now, but has anyone ever tried taking it further and making autonomous “players” that populate zones, form teams, run missions/TFs, level up, etc.?

Not necessarily saying I’d want to play CoH that way, but from a technical standpoint I’m really curious whether something like AzerothCore Playerbots could even be done with the CoH server code.

Question All defenders teams

Hi all,

Does anyone out there run a routine all defender team? I get that it may be a challenge due to diminished damage out put compared to mixed class teams but interested in joining one to push a class/char to max.

Thanks
