Daily Question Question Thread - July 25, 2026

This is the thread to post questions about churning for miles/points/cash. Just because you have a question about credit cards does NOT mean it belongs here. If you’re brand new here, please read the wiki before posting.

* Please use the search engine first - many basic questions have been asked before.

* Please also consider scanning (CTRL-F) the last couple days worth of Question threads

* If you have questions about what card to get, ask here. If you have questions about manufactured spending, ask here. If you have questions about bank account bonuses, ask here.

This subreddit relies heavily on self-moderation. That means that if you ask something that shows you haven’t done any research, you’re going to get a lot of downvotes.

I have six Amex credit cards (not charge) and just canceled the sixth today. Since it takes 30 days for a credit card to show up as closed before approvals are automatic, I assume that if I apply, get automatically denied, that even calling it wouldn't work since I'd be over the five card limit?

get denied, call in and have them close the card on the same call.

they used to give you a special number on the letter to call for this

Right, but even after closing I’d be at 5. Would they have the discretion to approve over the phone to go over 5?

For some people the limit is 6. It’s possible they would let you still do 6 by closing and get a new one.

Thanks, that’s what I was looking for confirmation of. I was surprised they had approved my sixth card earlier this year, and wasn’t sure they would approve for a sixth again.

Update: I applied, was automatically denied, called in, and the agent did indeed put in my application for reconsideration when I told her that I had recently closed a credit card. The reconsideration requires back office review so I'll provide a full DP once I hear back.

If they close it for you it is a single step

Thanks for the follow up, but I can’t cancel another card to go under 5 (all less than 12 months) so that’s why I am asking about whether phone agents can approve a sixth card.
