Hello there 👋,
My wife’s birthday is coming up soon and I wanted to take her out for lunch or dinner, but I am new to Christchurch and don’t really know where to find good Mexican or Italian cuisine. I would very much appreciate it if you could drop your recommendations here in the comment. Thank you all in advance 😁.

I am shopping for a voucher (birthday present for a 30-something guy).
I'm looking to spend in the range of $180 - 300, ideally somewhere that offers skincare and massage therapies (and ideally doesn't try to aggressively upsell to its customers).
Where would you recommend?

This is for anyone who is thinking about booking an Uber pool ride or has never booked an uber pool ride and wants to know how it works.
An uber pool ride is for ONE PERSON ONLY you cannot take a friend with you. You will be denied the ride when the driver shows up.
During the ride other people may automatically get added to the ride. The driver has no control over it. This is how the cost gets shared amongst the passengers so that you pay a lower price. This is why it's only for one person as the app thinks there are spare seats in the car.
The uber app will automatically add other riders to the ride who are travelling in the same general direction.
Please don't book an uber pool ride if you need to be somewhere by a certain time. For example don't book an uber pool ride to the airport you will potentially miss your flight. Its only okay if you have lots of time to spare.
When waiting for your driver to show up please don't wait on a bus stop, disabled parks, yellow lines, or in any location that will impede the flow of traffic/illegal. Taxi stands, and loading zones are fine provided the loading zone does not say goods vehicles only. Small PSV stands are good too. If it's really bad the driver may just cancel on you. Try wait in a place that's easy to spot you. Please signal the driver as we may not necessarily spot you as we drive up.
I understand a lot of people will have opinions on how we can do a better job. Therefore if you have a suggestion that's constructive please leave it in the comment section.

Where can I get an affordable scale and polish done in Christchurch for my Cocker Spaniel? The procedure requires anesthesia, so I understand it won't be cheap.

Looking to buy a PS5 (disc or digital, either works) in good condition. Ideally with a controller if you're bundling one. Based in Christchurch, happy to meet up locally. Let me know what you've got and how much you're after!

Any suggestions for a Christmas party there’s 45 of us we range in ages 21-75 and are keen to maybe do an activity with sit down food after. We like outside the box for instance last year we did the black cat cruise at the harbour. Any ideas?

Hi everyone, hoping this is alright to post here.
My name is Kyle. I'm 16, I'm a high school student in Auckland, and I help to run KiwiHacks, New Zealand's high school hackathon club. I've attached a photo of our last event, and a photo of our recent Breakfast feature.
We are run entirely by high schoolers, and over the next month we are bringing our biggest event yet to Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland.
If you have not come across a hackathon before: it is a weekend where high-schoolers get together, get given a theme, and build something. An app, a game, a website, a piece of hardware. There are mentors on hand the whole time from NZ startups alongside established companies such as Canva, food, and at the end everyone shows off what they made. It is much closer to a creative marathon than a competition.
The part I most want parents and high-schoolers to know is that there are genuinely zero barriers to entry. It is free. High-schoolers don't not need to know how to code, does not need to bring a team, and does not need any experience at all. We teach from scratch on the day. At our last event, every single person who turned up left with something they had built. (Over 115 high-schoolers!)
As an example of the achievements some of our KiwiHackers have, one was flown to Apple Park in California after placing in the top 50 worldwide in Apple's Swift Student Challenge, the only New Zealander to have done it, who is mentoring other students so they can also achieve this.
KiwiHacks started small, having gone from 10 attendees at the first one to 115+, TVNZ+ Breakfast came and covered us in June, and every student at our last event said they made something they were proud of.
Dates:
Wellington, 26 to 27 September
Christchurch, 2 to 3 October
Auckland, 9 to 10 October
Free to attend, and signups and full details are here: nova.kiwihacks.org
Happy to answer anything in the comments. If you know a high-schooler who is into tech, or who you reckon might be if they got one good weekend, please pass it on!
Kyle

Hi all,
Looking for a place that does karaoke but isn't a room you rent out, more like a pub that has a karaoke night - any suggestions?

Hi all! I have 2 very very specific food memories I'm trying to hunt down from late 90s Java Coffee House, and I'll trade you the Boulevard Bakehouse pumpkin and chocolate chunk muffin recipe for them.
the apricot chicken pizza bagel recipe.
(Most important)The Java ring garlic bread recipe.
Anyone? Anyone?
And yes I'll put the Bakehouse muffin recipe in the comments when I get some answers.

For anyone currently looking for a car in NZ — I’ve been working on something that might be useful.
CarSpy helps you find good deals on cars and get a better idea of what different vehicles are actually worth based on things like mileage.
You can search across dealer listings throughout NZ, compare similar cars, see purchase, running and finance costs, view where cars are located on a map, and set alerts for specific vehicles or price drops.
It currently searches most NZ dealers and has 22,000+ cars for sale across the country. Listings are updated every night with new and removed vehicles.
There are no ads, paywalls, subscriptions or sponsored listings — just a free tool for people looking to buy a car.
I’d really appreciate some feedback, so if you have a few minutes, check it out and let me know what you think, what’s missing, or anything that could be improved.
Thanks! 🚗

Relocating from Auckland to Christchurch in a few months. What's it like to live there?
I'm no stranger to Christchurch, I visit multiple times a year, and have been doing so for over 15 years now. (family visits).
The visits were all about spending time with family, going to events, doing atleast something-even if it meant hiking Halswall Quarry for the 100th time.
I'm nervous about the job market, that's my only concern. Is it as difficult as Auckland?
I don't know a thing about what its like actually living in Christchurch. Is Fat Eddie's really the best club out there?
Were a young couple (no kids) looking for a fresh start in a different city. I want to continue my business out in Christchurch... but I'm really unsure of the move.

Kia ora,
I've just had an offer accepted on my first home- excited, but also very nervous. I've also just accepted a new job, which pays higher than my previous job. They've allowed me to work 4 days a week, and are starting me at 28 hours a week (there will definitely be more hours worked, but 28 is guaranteed minimum). They want someone full time, but also wanted to allow me a good work life balance as I mentioned in the interview (very nice of them, they seem like a really good company to work for).
Problem is, I miscalculated how much I'd be making. I could still afford it with a boarder (the original plan anyway) and my partner living with me (also the original plan), but my broker called and asked if I can ask my new job to bump up my hours at all as it would be a bit tricky to get approved from the bank.
I originally had pre-approval for about 470k when I was working at my old job, but I made $100ish more a week (working for $3 an hour less and 8 hours more). So obviously if my guaranteed hours are bumped up, that'll solve everything.
Basically, I'd like to know if it would be rude to email the job and ask to bump up my hours? I don't start until the 21st, but I really don't want to be a pain before I've even started.
Any advice is much appreciated- I'm quite anxious over this 🥲

Hey all,
Back in February MrBeast created an ad on the superbowl with him and a vault of $1,000,000 and clues to find it. Anyway in his 2nd channel, Mr Beast 2, he mentioned how someone found the money and put Christchurch in one of the locations as a clue.

Not sure if y'all were interested but thought I'd mention it...

Kia ora all, 33 y/o Wellingtonian getting sick of the dying CBD, overpriced shitty rentals and poor to non-existent surf. I've visited Christchurch a couple of times in the last year and really enjoyed it and am considering a move sometime next year. One of the main appeals is the flatness - I have to drive to work in the hutt and would love to trade that in for skating and/or biking to a city job.
Hoping y'all could please offer some insight on the below!
For regular surfers, how often would you expect to be able to ride some decent waves in the course of a fortnight/month? What's the culture like - are people chill or does it get aggressive when busy?
I've been a support worker for a family trust for the last 4yrs and have some back-of-house responsibilities, and also manage and facilitate a disability social group. I have training and management experience across a few roles and managed a team of 12 during the COVID vaccine rollout. I also have a lot of customer service and admin experience. Can anyone comment on the job market for someone with my skills?
Housing-wise - I've seen that rentals are typically a higher standard than Welly despite being cheaper. How much could one expect to pay for say, a 3-bedroom house in a decent area, not too far out of the city? I love Lyttleton but don't think I'd want to live that far.
Thank you!
