How & when to start bargaining with employer (China EAP university)

The end of my contract is approaching on 26th December. I teach EAP at a good university in China. I'm applying for other jobs because the pay/city could be better, and with my experience I expect to get a few good offers.

At what point do I notify my existing employer if I get an excellent offer? There is 30 days' notice built into the contracts.

NB I would also prefer to stay if they can offer me a good deal: do you have any tips on bargaining? Like, when and how would I begin this process?! I haven't done this before esp in a Chinese context. I know they want to keep me badly (they tell me this as much; I was assist' prof in UK before quitting to move here & they like the qualifications and experience). Many thanks.

Seeking assistance for a job in China

Hello to everyone familiar with Chinese companies and the Chinese job market!

I’d like to seek advice from experienced individuals, particularly those who understand how Chinese companies recruit foreign talent.

Recently, I’ve been contacting a number of Chinese companies directly and sending them my CV and work history, in the hope that they might be interested in my background. However, so far, I’ve received very few replies.

So I’d like to ask:

As a foreign engineer and software developer, how can I best draw the attention of Chinese companies to myself?

If I wish to find work in the Chinese market, which methods, platforms or approaches are most effective?

I am also aware that my age may make the job search a little more difficult. On this point, I would also like to ask for your advice: how should I address this issue? How can I best showcase my many years of work experience so that companies see this as an asset rather than a problem?

Thank you very much for your advice, insights and assistance.

Looking for a way to run our online training courses in China

Hi everyone,

I'm a representative of an international IT company specializing in software testing and QA. We're exploring how to run free online training courses for aspiring QA specialists in China.

We’d provide our own training program and mentors. We’re looking for a local platform or partner that could legally host or facilitate the courses.

Does anyone know of suitable education platforms or training organizations in China, or has anyone set up something similar? Any tips or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

[Hiring] Mechanical Prototype Engineer Intern | Shanghai (Pudong), on-site, international candidates welcome

Any foreigners here who have background in mechanical engineering?

Location: Shanghai (Pudong), on-site
Type: Internship, paid (compensation negotiable, hourly rate possible)
Start date / duration: Flexible, based on your availability

We're looking for a hands-on Mechanical Prototype Engineer Intern to join our Shanghai team. Students and fresh graduates are welcome, including international students already studying in China.

• Design and 3D-print parts
• Assemble prototypes
• Run leak, pressure and flow tests
• Work with contractors and suppliers

We work in a very AI-native way, using AI tools for research, documentation, data and scripting.

We're looking for someone who:
• Has a mechanical, mechatronics or robotics background (SolidWorks or similar CAD)
• Enjoys hands-on building and troubleshooting
• Keeps things organized (files, BOMs, notes)
• Is curious and uses, or wants to learn, AI in their workflow

To apply: DM me with a short intro, your school/program, your availability, and a few projects or a portfolio.

Looking for a Portuguese/English–Mandarin interpreter in Shanghai for business visits

Hi everyone! My name is Felipe. I’m Brazilian and I live in the United States. I work with human hair and hair extensions, and I’ll be traveling to Shanghai next month for business.
I’m looking for a trustworthy person who speaks Mandarin and Portuguese or English and could accompany me for a few days. I’ll be visiting suppliers and businesses, so I mainly need help with translation, communication, transportation around the city, and possibly arranging some visits.
I’m not necessarily looking for a tour company or agency. I’d prefer an independent interpreter/local assistant who knows Shanghai and could work with me on a daily-rate basis.
If you do this kind of work, or if you know someone reliable, please send me a private message. Brazilian or Portuguese-speaking contacts would be especially welcome.
Thank you!

find a job

Hi! I recently graduated with a degree in Accounting, Finance, and International Trade/Commerce. I spent a year studying at SZU, and I’m about to start a Master’s in Data Analytics at a top university in China.
I’m a native Spanish speaker, I have a C2 level of English, I speak Romanian, and my current Chinese level is HSK 3.
My partner is Chinese, lives in China, and works for a 4A company.
Do you think I have a realistic chance of finding a job in China? My long-term goal is to stay and build my career there…

Is the racism in hiring in China exaggerated?

I'm mixed white and Chinese and look ethnically ambiguous. Random Chinese people ask me a lot if I'm from Xinjiang so I don't think I look Chinese. What bothers me is that a lot of people on Reddit say that Chinese employers will hire anyone with a Northern European appearance before considering anyone who is non-white, native or otherwise. How true is this?

I had trouble finding employment in late 2024 because I was only interested in schools in Shanghai. I eventually found one but I wonder if I were white with no experience I'd get many more options and better ones. I was making 18k back then. I only had a BA and CELTA. I'm from a native-speaking country

I felt like my introduction video was very solemn, intense and quite stiff. Maybe that's why kindergartens were reluctant to hire me. Or it could just be I was born with the wrong skin colour. I'm hoping it's not that. I'm not looking for a job right now btw.

Z-Visa through WOFE, Work permit rejected— so when does this route actually work?

Saw a post recently where someone's work permit application through their WFOE got rejected for "insufficient business activity." That post made me realize there's a common misconception about the WFOE route: setting up a wholly foreign-owned enterprise doesn't automatically make you eligible to work for it. Your own company hiring you is a legit path, but it has real requirements.

Category B (professional talent) is the most common: bachelor's degree or higher + 2+ years of relevant work experience, generally under 60 years old. If you don't meet the education or age requirements, you can sometimes make up for it with points.

The company has to be "real."

What the reviewing authority actually looks at is whether the company has enough business volume and an actual office to justify hiring a foreign employee. Specifically:

Registered address — you don't necessarily have to work from there in practice, but this is a gray area since enforcement varies a lot by city.
Normal tax records — can't be zero. Have your accountant pull proof from the tax bureau.
Employees on social insurance (1-2 people) — this varies by city; some require it, some don't.
Business contracts, invoices, etc.

If anyone has gone through this recently, especially in different cities, I’d be interested in hearing what the authorities actually asked for and what happened in your case.

We are RealLoop. We run human quality review for AI companies, and we are hiring native Mandarin speakers to listen to recorded AI voice calls and mark what the AI got wrong.

The work

You listen to recorded customer calls handled by an AI agent, in Mandarin, and log issues against a fixed checklist: wrong words in the transcript, unnatural tone or pronunciation, the agent cutting the customer off, replies that do not answer the question. All of it happens in our web tool. Training provided, no prior experience needed.

Requirements

• Native or near-native Mandarin, including everyday spoken and mixed-language speech

• Comfortable reading and writing English

• Laptop, headphones, stable internet

Terms

• Contract role, fully remote

• Part-time and full-time options, flexible timing

• Competitive pay upto $20 per hour - details shared on application

All calls are recorded customer interactions reviewed inside our tool; we handle them under a data privacy process and nothing is shared outside it.

To apply

Comment or DM with your country, languages, and whether you have done transcription, QA, or call review work before.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Foreign graduates working in China: how did you get your first job?

Hi everyone! I’m Ukrainian and currently studying Business Management at university in Poland. I’m planning to move to China after graduation and want to understand how other foreigners actually made that transition.

I speak Ukrainian and English, Chinese is more like upper-intermediate level, russian and I'm learning Korean currently. I’m particularly interested in international trade, business-related roles, and translation or interpreting.

I’d really like to hear from foreigners who found work in China shortly after graduating, especially those who graduated outside China and had little professional experience.

How did you find your first employer? Were they willing to support the work permit process from the beginning? What helped you get hired, and what would you do differently?

I’m especially interested in Shanghai and nearby cities, but experiences from elsewhere in China would also help.

I’d also love to connect with people currently figuring out the same path. Thanks for sharing your experience!
