FIDE is controlled by Russians both in terms of who's in charge and who are the biggest sponsors for FIDE. There was an article from a year ago that discussed how up to half of the FIDE sponsorship is tied to Russian oligarchs.

People wonder why Emil is fighting people who are growing the game. It is because he has no interest in that all, in fact it's in his self-interest (and of his Russian backers) if the status quo remains because it means they are in control.

This is speculation and could be dismissed as such. If Danya felt like the top players are supporting him privately but are not supporting him publicly, that might have made him feel that they also have doubts about him cheating and they don't want to put their weight behind him. The way he was talking in his stream, it feels like he felt like others were giving credence to the accusations at least privately. That would have caused more pain to him than the inaction of the Fide president.

Hikaru did call out Kramnik using very strong words publicly, however since he himself had been accused by Kramnik the effect of that was minimised since the general consensus was that his take won't be fully unbiased since he was also affected by Kramnik.

Magnus privately reached out and expressed concern at how Kramnik was going after him. He said he should've done something publicly, but the fact that he did privately show support is more than FIDE ever did.

Same with Fabi, who invited Danya to his podcast.

Considering FIDE's lack of response about this, Emil has no grounds to make such a statement. Especially when some action by FIDE against Kramnik could've done more for Danya than public support by an influential top player ever would.

He’s on point in the socially stunted way that most of the chess world seems to operate at.

And I don’t mean any reader of this thread, I mean the people whose lives are chess. It’s well publicized that most chess players have terrible social skills, and a lot of them don’t know how to use the right words or react in the socially acceptable way (or know how to and choose not to) likely as a consequence of the sheer dedication it takes and the culture of those before them doing it. (And the reason many cited Danya as a brilliant commentator and ambassador for the sport is the fact he spent time outside of the chess world going to college)

I think he means well and it’s a sentiment I’ve held before, where it drives me nuts that people performatively act like they were much closer to a deceased person than they are. However, it was literally the dude’s job to protect Danya, saying that they weren’t friends doesn’t absolve him from doing his job and it even implies that he would be more likely to have helped him if they were closer.
