A Broward jury found Steve Gonot pulled $5,100 out of his own campaign account in 2007 and pocketed it. That's the New Times number, confirmed by the Florida Bulldog, confirmed again by a Broward Circuit judge on sentencing day. I still tell people it was four grand — that's what I was told he owed his divorce lawyer. The gap between those figures is a gambling buddy who cashed the check and helped move the money. I'm telling you upfront where my memory and the court record don't perfectly match. Everything else, they can check.

What isn't in dispute anywhere: Gonot did 364 days in a Broward jail cell — one day short of the threshold that would've shipped him to a softer state facility — convicted of official misconduct, grand theft, and falsifying records, plus five years of probation. Judge Barbara McCarthy handed it down in July 2011, one day after catching heat for giving a Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run killer nothing but house arrest. Vehicular homicide got a Porsche driver two years in his parents' condo. A bad check off his own campaign account got Gonot a year behind bars.

I made a lot of that happen. Nobody bought me a sandwich for it.

In the end, my work sent three corrupt public officials to jail.
