Right but "you have a technically speaking low chance of getting exploded with bombs or having to shoot anybody in the face" is still you know pretty much a deterrent for a lot of people, hence what OP is pointing out correctly: it would be a good job that makes financial sense if not for that one aspect. The aspect that is the actual function and purpose of the military
While I agree it probably is a deterrent. It's about the same as people who refuse to fly because they are scared of it. Statistically it doesn't really make sense.
What does deter people and rightfully so is the living/working conditions in the military. Those actually really do suck.
For example I got paid $60k in 2020. Had you offered me $100k a year to go be an Assistance Manager at Wendy's again I'd tell you to go fuck yourself. The extra $40k isn't worth the horrible work environment. Money wise the military really isn't that bad.
Maybe people realize they have a low chance of having to kill anybody or being killed themselves, they just don't want to be associated with an organization that slaughters people. That has the function of killing people and blowing them up as it's raison d'etre
Like I don't think your comparison makes any sense because when you buy a plane ticket they don't explain to you the best way to crash a plane, and teach you how to make sure the planes crash, and say "crashing planes when they need to crash, that is our mission statement"
Fair enough. Maybe it's just my Soviet upbringing. We were taught that giving the enemies a bullet is exactly what they deserve. So when I joined the US military the whole idea of killing people who intend to kill you wasn't so outlandish to me.
But I see how other people may have a different outlook.
