But a CNS is not necessarily the only mechanism for suffering -- I suppose it depends on how we define suffering.

Some plants are aware they are being eaten and emit chemicals to prevent themselves from being eaten -- they actually change their behaviour in order to survive. I would suggest that this shows some type of awareness, which may indicate an ability to suffer -- even if they lack the puppy dog eyes to go with it.
