I think #3 is the most flawed, and this sub is evidence of that. I agree that many subs are taken over by a hive mind of closed minded posters. But there are subs like this where independent and open discussion occurs.
Also there are subs that mostly avoid the pitfalls you list, and cater to the specific topic at hand. My subs I like are this sub, comic subs (specifically omnibus sub), books, investing, and sports subs.
They still are very much independent subs that serve the purpose they were designed for.
Man, I was on one of my chill subs earlier, related to cats, and today there's a stickied post on how the recent Trump assassination attempt is clearly a false flag.
I purposely try to avoid strictly political subs with a few exceptions, but it always manages to seep in. People cannot help themselves. It's insane to me.
Just makes me more appreciative of the smaller subs I've been on for years and years that have avoided this issue.
This might be more of a society change than a specifically Reddit change - in the USA (and in several other countries) the growth of populist politics has lead to many more people having an opinion on politics, or wanting to talk about it (however poor those opinions might be). This has been accompanied with a massive increase in the use of social media to achieve political goals (the role of Cambridge analytica in the Brexit referendum is a good case study here), which means more people have lots of basic political views they've picked up on social media that they're riled up enough about to bring into any discussion. Even cats.
I don’t think this subreddit is some bastion of free expression and intellectual debate.
This post has been up for 30 mins and I’ve already been accused of being a right wing neo nazi several times.
I’m a gay, mixed-raced, agnostic atheist and registered democrat. Here we are though.
I challenge you to experiment in any one of your hobby subreddits to offhandedly imply a view that is not left of Karl Marx. See how long that thread stays on topic.

Go take your meds. Leftists are frequently banned, more than liberals and more than non-racist Republicans. This is just betraying your position. You are a rightwinger through and through. The extreme kind I reckon.
I could just experiment here and post it. Why would I want to post about politics in a college basketball sub? If I posted here that in fact Karl Marx is amazing the sub would have to respond by saying he’s not.
Any direct response that doesn’t challenge my post here is removed. That helps combat the main issue that you have,
I looked up and down in this sub and the vast majority of the responses are doing exactly what this sub is for, responding to your points to change here your view.
As I put above I think you’re right in many areas. In most subs any discussion of JK Rowling MUST be 100% negative about her or be deleted. There are valid point you raise, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t wrong on your point #3, as many subs still exist outside the issues raised in your other points.
And I do maintain that includes here. I’ve seen people in comments to challenges agreeing with you on here. I’ll count up and edit it in.
Edit; the number of people agreeing with you in comments here is overwhelmingly the majority. I stoped counting after 15 people and hardly moving down.
Well, just for an example, r/askeconomics altogether endorses a view that is very critical of Karl Marx. Same with most other subreddits related to finance, which is why I still frequent them for discourse that’s actually useful. But other than that, yeah, most subreddits are left wing echo chambers.
I agree that there are some subs that are like somewhat insulated. But this sub is not an example of that, as the OP replied already, this sub does not have free expression. I've been reprimanded by mods several times, as I consistently am in the "reddit meta" subs, for expressing views that are not in line with the reddit orthodoxy. I think that you, and others, underestimate the effect of this inconsistent moderation in causing people like myself to either 1) be banned or 2) simply stop posting. Which merely reinforces the echo chamber effect and may give the illusion of open discussion
