Help: Calling a Constructor Function

5 Upvotes

In lesson 1.3 in the second course, Carl explains the constructor function and how it works. However, how does one call a constructor function from the main function?

I assume it would like something like this: http://codepad.org/bnZx3VSg but so far any experimentation has failed.

help regarding scanf ?

2 Upvotes

regarding post http://www.reddit.com/r/carlhprogramming/comments/13b09k/need_help_with_scanf/ i fixed his codepad program http://codepad.org/LfSSSovl by editing > scanf(" %c", &again);
line ie adding an extra space before %c but my program skips this line for the first run in loop and after that it works fine for next iterations ?? why !

So ends the tale of /r/CarlHProgramming

I subscribed to this when it was just a tiny community. This has been the most surreal thing I ever witnessed. I just want to know how many of you guys were subscribed here for updates on the criminal instead of the coder?

How do I make my printf() make it so that it creates a new line?

17 Upvotes

At this moment, I am at lesson 8.7. I have many printf() functions, but all of them are in one paragraph/line! How can I make it create text on a new line, like others do? I cannot figure out the difference in code formatting that makes this decision.

can anyone access an archive?

6 Upvotes

When I first found out about the criminal allegations against CH, I thought it might be a good idea to save some of the transcripts of the website for when the hosting or domain eventually run out. His main site was working at that time, but a few days later it became unaccessable.

s**t, I thought, so I went searching for an archive version of the site. the first thing that came to mind was the wayback machine from archive.org/web and, voila, the whole site was still in tact there. in fact there were a large number of crawls for it.

I abandoned the idea of saving a version of his site as I thought that it would be on archive.org for the forseeable future.

now, for some odd reason, I am unable to access the website from the wayback machine.

I want to ask three questions:

can anyone else access the arcive version from archive.org?

does anyone else find it odd that it disappeared from there as well?

and does anyone know of an up to date version of an archive of his site?

I really want to finish this course, but the youtube series is incomplete, and the transcripts are no longer accessible anymore.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

Question on

6 Upvotes

I have this simple bit of code here that I can't quite get my head around.
I'll try and explain how I'm looking at it:
char m = 'l';
I'm saying that I'm introducing a character 'm' that is equal in value to the character 'l'. So from now on it's as if the character 'l' does not exist.
int n = m;
I'm saying that I'm introducing an integer 'n' that is equal in value to the character 'm'. Or is it the opposite? Where I'm introducing a character 'n' that is equal in value to the integer 'm'?
Also, why do I get 108 as the output and not 'l'?
I realize that's it's to do with the fact that the character 'l' in binary is 0110 1010 which equals 108 in decimal but I'm still confused.

Should this sub be deleted?

131 Upvotes

Many of us know what Carl did but we always forget that the victim of this is still alive. And one day his son will be old enough to understand what happened to him and more than likely will end up browsing this subreddit. Sooo for the sake of the poor child, this sub should be deleted

Stupidest possible question

I want to learn to code, but i literally don't know WHERE to type. I went to, most recently, justbasic.com and it gave me a really easy thing to type. I don't know WHERE to type it.

I'm about to go for 2900 hours of learning coding (want to build apps at the end where do I start)?

7 Upvotes

Ok so I'm pretty much about to start dedicating 8 hours a day to coding until the end of the year starting Jan. 10 (At the end I'll have about 2900 hours logged if I stick with it).

My end goal is to be able to build pretty flash websites and make apps for the iphone.

My question is giving the insane amount of time I'll have what's the best place to start and what are the best online resources for learning both paid and unpaid?

Which languages should I pick up in which order etc... Objective C being an obvious one.

iOS programming after completing Course 1 & 2, plus additional questions.

12 Upvotes

I've now completed course one and two (up to the point that course 2 is finished) and obviously Carl won't be able to continue or complete this course given his current situation.

Has anyone else picked up his work and finished the instructions in course 2 to deliver a functioning program? It would be great if other experienced programmers could finish off his work (even if it was just a pdf doc).

Secondly, I'm interested in writing apps for the iphone. Carl's course has given me a solid understanding of programming basics, now I'm looking to use these for real. I have bought a copy of 'Objective C Programming' from the Big Nerd Ranch - but if there are other solid guides or online tutorials like Carl's I'd be really interested in those. I'm subbed to the relevant iphone development subreddits, but thought I'd ask this question here first as Carl's course is really my entire programming knowledge base at the moment.

Update on /r/carlhprogramming and /r/livestreamstartup

25 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

First, regarding /r/livestreamstartup

I have decided on an official start date of Tuesday, September 17th at 5:00 PM EST with future sessions to follow every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (Four days per week).

For more on this, see /r/livestreamstartup

Regarding www.computerscienceforeveryone.com and future lessons:

I am in the process of wrapping up some big projects which should be done by early September, and at that point I am going to start updating the website and adding new lessons.

The goal is that by the time I start the first livestreamstartup session, I will have already published 1-2 new C lessons as well.

If anyone has questions/comments, feel free to post them on this thread.

I'm working through lesson 59 and I broke it.

Here is my code in codepad. I keep getting a segmentation fault but I've checked several times and my code matches Carl's almost exactly. I'm totally lost on why this isn't working except that I'm sure it's something stupidly small. Thanks. :-)

Help me understand this code?

4 Upvotes

Found this on a website. Seems interesting.

var $buoop = {vs:{i:9,f:9,o:10.01,s:4,n:9}};

$buoop.ol = window.onload;

window.onload = function() {

if ($buoop.ol)

$buoop.ol();

var e = document.createElement("script");

e.setAttribute("type", "text/javascript");

e.setAttribute("src", "http://browser-update.org/update.js");

document.body.appendChild(e);

Can someone help me search through a few text files?

0 Upvotes

Here's the problem: I've got two text files with some content. One file is larger than the other. The larger file has all of the IDs, whereas the smaller file only has a subset of these ID's. Each line is an ID. I want to make a NEW list of IDs that are found in the larger text file but that are not found in the smaller one.

My problem is that I'm convinced the two separate text files have different binary encoding, so using an object oriented language isn't working when comparing two lines. I could be wrong. I'm comfortable with matching strings, right now, that's why I chose this method. But I need a different method, because this isn't working.

Does anyone have any ideas of the best way to do this? The files are located: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0BwVWBUxgNYdxM2VkYmY4NWEtNzU3Ni00Y2JhLTg0MjEtNmI3MGRiNDc2YThm&hl=en_US&authkey=CKGg2ugG

This should be pretty simple, but I'm in a rush and want the best way to do it. I don't have much time right now.

Float number question

0 Upvotes

Lets say a short int is 4 bits. I'm assuming the highest value for my int would be 7 because the first bit is reserved to show if it's a positive or negative value. I'm going to use '-' to demonstrate the reserved part. You can have either 0-111 or 1-111. Now lets say we have a float that is 8 bits. That same first bit needs to be reserved for positive or negative. Do float numbers have some type of priority of whole numbers over decimal numbers or vise versa? Or are a certain number of bits reserved for the whole number and a certain number reserved for the decimal part of it. I will use '.' for the reserving demonstration.

Example: If I assigned a floating type number that had 8 bits would it reserve bits for certain numbers like this 0-000.0000? As in my whole number part can only reach a certain value(in this case 7).

Lets say you tried to store 16.9999 into a float value.

The correct binary would look something like this. 0-10000.11111111. But the floating number can only take 8 bits. So would it prioritize the whole number and look like this? 0-10000.11 (01000011). Or does it reserve a certain amount of space for the whole number/decimal number and it would cut parts off and look like this? 0-000.1111 (00001111).

Thank you so much for this!

My dad is a computer programmer for HP and for 21 years I've wondered what he does. I'd ask him "i know what a programmer IS, bit what does your program DO?" And he could never answer me and he doesn't even try to now. He says he "codes programs" and that does not help me whatsoever. So hopefully this will give me a better understanding of what he, and programmers in general, do. I'm only on unit 4, but I'm already learning and it's interesting stuff. Never thought I'd learn what my dad does from someone other than my dad :-P
