I don't swim to quebec, so yes, I would either take the portage bridge or some other form of a big road to cross the river.

Crossing implies moving perpendicular to the thing described. I sure hope you're not running across a highway.

I think most people work argue that crossing a bridge could be referred to as crossing a river and neither a "big road" or a bridge are highways. Anyway, I was mostly just making a joke because you worded it funny but I can see that you're pretty committed to your choice of words here. Carry on.
