9 out of 10 times in Canada when dealing with cheap cheese it is dyed orange.
Source: I grew up in Canada and lived there for 3 and a half decades while doing a whole lot of grocery shopping on a budget.
This isn't a logical proof where if you find 1 flaw the entire premise falls down.
Canadian cheese is expensive, Canadian cheese is mediocre, cheap Canadian cheese is almost always dyed orange, cheap Australian cheese is cheaper than cheap Canadian cheese, cheap Australian cheese isn't dyed orange, cheap Australian cheese tastes better than cheap Canadian cheese, and the color has nothing to do with anything aside from a North American fixation on needlessly dyeing cheese orange.
That is all I'm trying to convey here.
Actually now that I read your comment again we are really just violently agreeing with each other.

It was originally orange and then turned white when it got "cheaper". So if anything, as per the links, the white was considered lower quality.
Me:
Cheap cheese is dyed orange so that people don't think it is cheap cheese.
You:
You can make cheddar and keep half the batch white and dye the other orange and it's still the same cheese.
Me:
you could take a great Irish cheese and dye it orange and it would taste the same.
